Bottom line is that he's an above-average player making good/great DL money.

I would've liked to keep Canty as well, but I applaud Jerry for not overpaying yet another FA.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Chris Canty?? wow..Is he going to play DT for them on certain downs?

That much for not even a starter?

He will start. And go to DT in the nickel/dime. This keeps them from having to play Tuck inside on passing downs.

On the bright side..they are giving Boley,Canty and Bernard all this money with no WR replacement. That's what is confusing

They haven't ruled out Burress yet.

The other issue is that Denver, KC and Green Bay have all be shut out thus far.

The Giants taking one of the true 3-4 players off the board (Seattle took Cole too) hurts all of them. Competition is going to be very fierce.

Whether people like it or not, we will probably have to address this via the draft. I think Olshansky has to be grinning seeing the kind of money Hayneworth and Canty received and has to be pleased he has three or four teams he can pit against each other.

Olshansky is going to be a clear winner out of this.

That said, to get 2 productive DL out of one draft is no easy feat. A cheaper option than Igor is M Wright from the Pats. He can play both NT and DE for us.

I would just feel more comfortable if we could get one DL in FA. I don't know if we could actually get 2 solid DL in one draft. We would have to get lucky.

I can count those who have had five sack plus seasons in the last decade on one hand. I named two of them in my response.

That's not "many". Let's see your "spin" on that.

MY spin is that we are talking about Wade's scheme, not Pittsburgh. Guys like Kerney, Castillo, Fletcher, Smith, Dronett, and Clark averaged more than 7 sacks a game in Wade's scheme. Castillo just happened to be one of the best of these but Canty came nowhere near any of their productions. Thats not spin. That is just the way that it is. This is also what happened at every stop of Wade's. Canty is awful at rushing the passer in any scheme.

Canty and Osi starting? With Tuck not starting on first and second downs?

This is a stupid signing by the Giants. They were fine with Bernard,Robbins,Cofield and Alford at DT..

I'm pissed if I'm a Giants fan because that throws out the Boldin trade. Plax isn't coming back Alexander..he isn't.

Oh and Marcellus Wiley got over 10 sacks in Wade's 3-4 playing DE. Marcellus Wiley. Look at what Rat was able to do and he didnt have Ware and Ellis lining up outside their shoulder.

He'll likely see time all over the line, like Tuck and Kiwi. He'll primarily play DT, but he could see time at DE as well. The flexibility this affords the Giants is mind boggling. Kiwi could even find his way at linebacker from time to time.

I doubt Canty can be effective like that. While having the strength to play inside, he is nowhere near the athlete nor the edge rusher like Tuck or even Kiwi.

Canty is what he is. A big guy who is stout against the run and taking on blocks. Besides that, the guy doesn't do much. That's definitely not worth $40 million.

But I can't hate on the guy for getting it if someone is willing to give it to him. It's just pure lunacy that he got it though.

Osi, Canty, Robbins, Tuck (Not to shabby for a front 4)

Kiwi, Pierce, Boley( Make up the LB core for and the rest of the front 7)

From what I'm reading of Giants sites Canty will play DT and this on paper is their starting front 7 now.

That looks outstanding.

Justin tuck is going to be extremely mad though, He said last year the giants didnt have to try and buy a super bowl.

He is going to be so mad he has to play next to free agents I bet he quits and doesnt play anymore.

4 of there starting 7 on defense are from free agency!

:laugh2:

He just got picked up for depth. With Umenyiora coming back from injury and Kiwanuka playing the way he did this past season, Canty will be fighting for playing time, where he could have likely worked his way into a starting rotation in a 3-4 defense.
You don't pay a guy $42 mil to be a backup. He's going to be one of their starting DTs.

Damn. That's an impressive front 7 with good depth.

That Giants defense is going to be very, very good next year. Again.

I just read my post and realized that it was riddled with epic failure, haha. I was reading something and posted two different thoughts in one. Another post on another board I visit says a similar thing but talks about Canty playing DT.

I'd like to rescind that statement, and then agree with most posters that he will likely struggle at DT.
