People can separate the player and the human. Carr is a very good guy who does a lot off the field to help people.

Doesn't change the fact that he's a mediocre CB. The fact he does a lot to help people off the field doesn't change the fact he's average on the field.

So your saying the cowboys gave 55 mil contract to a mediocre CB ?
Maybe it is the DC that is mediocre ??

I agree

To go 1-11 without Romo and then proceed to do absolutely nothing to upgrade the position seriously makes me question their intelligence

Maybe Garrett really is as dumb as 90% of this board thinks

1-11 with Weeden who won with Houston after being cut, and Cassel who has won in the NFL for a Decade.

I don't agree. You need to build it all. NFL QBs are going to eat you up if you can't cover. The Giants spend a lot of resources on their backfield, and that CAR team was good all over on defense.

I remember when we had Spencer/Ellis, Ratliff/Hatcher, and Ware playing at a high level and teams would go to the three step drop and attack Jacques Reeves, Keith Davis, Alan Ball, or the corpse of Roy Williams on quick routes to get the ball out before the rush can get upfield.

Our team speed at S and LB has been bad for a long time now. You need both units playing at a high level to really succeed.

Yep. Or with Bradie James back there when the lbs couldn't get deep enough in their drops and good QBs just dropped it in behind the backers and in front of the coverage. You gotta rush and cover in this league or you can't advance in playoff football.

Saints in a 2006 Sunday night game.

Payton/Brees threw to FB Mike Carney underneath for 3 TD sprints into the end zone. Completely destroyed our defense and turned me against Slug James. That sold me on Paytons talent and made me a fan of the strategy.

I remember that game. So frustrating to watch.

Say what you want about Carr, but this dude is nothing but all class, and it's never been his fault he wasn't a 50 million dollar CB.

I've liked him for years and LOVE the fact that he never gets hurt. Now we don't have to reach for DB's!!!

The dude's a stand up guy. He's done great stuff for the community. He's a good corner, though not the 50 mil great one we had hoped for. I can guarantee if this pass rush improves, we'll see better results out of Carr. (Hello, Bosa maybe.)

I admire Carr's character but just hope his play might respond positively to a better pass rush, assuming we're able to concoct one. I agree that it's very likely Bosa is in play but it's also possible Ramsey or Elliott is as well (depending largely upon what San Diego chooses to do ahead of us.)

Honestly, I'm just hoping we won't do anything tragic and hamstring ourselves for the foreseeable future. Opportunity is there for the taking but then, there is also some vulnerability. Hopefully, the "committee" will manage to keep Jerry in check in the event he's inclined to do something unbefitting his 40-year-old brain.

Well, we haven't had the draft yet. I'm not sure anybody expected them to sign an expensive FA. They got Mo back, Carr renegotiated, and they're getting Scandrick back. They're looking hard at Ramsey, and if they don't get him, you can bet they'll bring in a DB or two elsewhere. That's a fair amount of work for one position group in an offseason.

Come on Idgit, we brought back status quo (Carr and Mo) and have a good player in Scandrick coming back. We haven't done a thing to improve the secondary via FA. Mo was a complete bust until last season where he played average but understood retaining him as depth/fall back if no one is drafted/signed that would compete w/him. Carr has made 13M for two straight season with no TOs and ranking as a poor to average corner the last two seasons to top. That is a problem when your secondary was a problem to begin with. Complacency/retaining average to poor players is not the same thing as actively trying to improve the position. We could have cut Carr last off season @ the same salary, but it became convoluted into him taking a paycut for the averageness he represents? Hayward, Porter, etc. would have been much cheaper options and wouldn't reward poor play.

"Where else could you find such a wonderfully average player who does community service work?!...You don't part with that w/o a replacement" while also not looking for one? Not you specifically, but broad consensus on Carr for the most part.

I would expect Frederick extension soon. Maybe right after draft.

DAL PR may do just that to justify/answer for the lack of activity in FA. I was thinking mid season but you may be right considering that variable.

A couple of ways to take this news...1) Dallas doesn't expect Ramsey to make it to #4 or 2) should Ramsey drop to them he will be paired with B. Jones at Safety.

or they've been wanting him to take a pay cut for decades it would seem and he finally did and now we must micro analyze it. :)

The timing of the redone deal is odd. Days before the draft teams generally are not doing deals or releasing players. Generally...

Carr has not made 13M for 2 straight seasons.

Yes, they gave $55MM to a mediocre CB. He was the big, hot name that year in FA and teams thought he was better than he actually turned out to be.
