It's certainly possible Canty could see time at TE, or even Spears. They both played some tight end at some level. The probability isn't all that high, since they should both be focusing on getting healthy and learning the defenses they'll be playing in.

As far as our depth at tight end, we've got plenty for camp that can concentrate on learning the offense, making the team and contributing. As far as some of them being scrubs goes, we won't know until camp. If a converted basketball player can become a pro bowler out of the blue, one or two of ours can become at least serviceable depth.

Teams do use defensive linemen as situational tight ends sometimes. The concept is hardly new, and we did it some with Ekuban if I remember correctly. It doesn't mean that it will work well for everyone, or at all.

As an aside, Canty and Spears are both likely to be a vital part of our depth on the DL, and I don't know that I like the idea of risking injury to one of them because some linebacker takes out one of their knees on a pass play.

Occasionally lined up at TE in college = red zone threat in the NFL.

Got it!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, look at all those catches and TDs he had while lining up at TE in college... that should tell you that he was a potent "red zone threat"...

What's that you say?? Canty never caught a pass in college??

Ooooops... leave it to Nors, to suggest that a part-time college TE who never caught a single pass is a "red zone threat"... the plain truth is, Canty was used exclusively as a BLOCKING TE in goal line and short yardage situations... he was in effect a 3rd guard brought in for those situations...

Nors probably thought of Superstar Randal Williams as a receiving threat, too...

Yeah, we all know that Nors is all about stirring the fecal matter with semi-outrageous ideas... you're hardly breaking new ground with that observation, pal...

I just don't understand why people get MAD at him for that... me, I just like jerkin' his chain...

In the dead of night in the cold and damp castle, the rumbling of thunder in the distance. The doctor puts the final stich in his latest creation.

I'll bash Nors with the best of them, but, in reality, Spears or Canty at TE isn't that much of a stretch. I don't consider them a "threat" though.

Besides, the Cowboys already have their red zone TE weapon-- Jeff "Mr. TD" Robinson... 2 catches last year, for 2 yards and 2 TDs... 2 more catches the year before that, for 8 yards and 2 TDs... exactly how much more efficient can a red zone TE be, Nors?? :D
Not really trying to be a devils advocate here (well okay...maybe a little ;) ) but we are bringing in two guys to TC to compete with Robinson for the long snapper job. His salary is too high for a ST specialist so if we replace JR we might actually need that Goal Line TE to replace him.

The part about a Nors thread that gets me is how in response to his outlandish ideas so many people go off and try to refute his thoughts with opposing ideas and statements that are just as outlandish (and sometimes worse). And I'm not talking about the obvious exaggerations and sarcasm; I'm talking about what appear to be serious post.

Obviously, a guy with that size could be used in goal line situations. If he can catch a short pass, he should make quite the target in goal-line situations. At 6-7 who can cover him? Can anyone say jump ball?

Actually, I was being playful with my remarks about Robinson... as you correctly noted, it sure looks like the Boys are trying to replace ol' Jerry at deep snapper...

BRING SOETHING THAT IS REAL TO THE TABLE

Canty is a feasable SITUATIONAL TE.....

Spears is another guy you might give a few reps on Offense as well. Richard Seymour plays some FB....

Dude, why are you getting so bent out of shape? I'm with you!! Cundiff at MLB. Woody Dantzler at right guard. We're going to have the most versatile team in history, bro!! And we owe it all to you for getting all of our creative juices flowing. Hail Nors!!! (Nors at head coach?)

When I get going this could go anywhere.

The thought of an overmatched LB defending 6-7 290 Canty popped up - Als (small s for stringbean) came to mind. Remember Als was listed at 228 in his days as a backup special teamer in Tampa. He only started 1 season there. Burnett is 239 and will grow into a 245 NFL LB Frame (If his hip injury allows it)

Als is a gangly 230 pound undersized and old LB making $2M in cap....

Wow. Singleton is 9 lbs lighter. He's an anorexic disaster surely on the turk's list. /sarcasm off

You missed that he's not a playmaker - old and counting $2M against the cap!

Randal Williams - I've been on the record he SUCKED from day 1. A terrible player in college at New Hampshire. I'm surprised he even made it to career catch #1. Thats where it will end. 1 career catch.

He isn't 9 lbs lighter anyway. Try 1 according to the majority of the listings to be found. Al and Burnett have almost identical builds.

But Nors likes to stretch the truth to better fit his argument. He always claimed Howard was a 30 year old, but Pryce was always "only 29".

Exactly - some would have you believe we have quality depth at TE. Nice to have options in case of injury. See Campbell situation last year.

Another example was my observation that Gurode was a bust and the right side of our Line sucked. People actually tried to attack me on that one and defend Gurode. Thats a great reread thread.

If Canty can upgrade our Red zone situationally - do it.
