I agree, NY. We can't keep losing these guys and expect reserves to pick up their slack. Church was solid. Solid enough to where, barring a signing of Eric Berry (and, obviously he was extended), Church was our guy.

Going into this draft with too many holes on D sets us back. It is what it is, tho. No way in hell we pay Chrch that.

Hope we can re-sign Wilcox for a decent price. He's a thumper and he vastly improved last season. A late bloomer of sorts.

Wilcox scares me because I'm not sure he can be consistent as a starter.

Had a once in a decade draft last year. Banking on it two years in a row is nuts. We were 13-3 last year with these players we're just letting walk. No viable replacements either. See y'all in 2018. Jk but that's how I feel.

Some fans like to think we can upgrade the players we lose easily. We could draft a safety in the first round and there's no promise that he would be an upgrade.

I'm sad to see this one happen, because Church is a solid player, unless we have a FA plan to replace him. If our plan is to replace him with Heath then I think we'll see how poor of a plan that is next year ... and I like Heath for what he is.
But if McClay is the savant everyone says he is, he can just replace all of them.

Big hitter, but not a solid tackler. Often gets lost playing the deep passing game. Hope we find some significant safety help in the draft to replace Church.

I wish it were that easy. We've gotten some good contributors because of the pro personnel department, but we'll need more than contributors if we lose starters like Church.

Lol at fans who don't understand how good Church is.

Forget that pass rush. Gotta fix the secondary now.

Silver lining, we're going to have a bunch of young players on defense after the draft. We'll get to see who we're going to build our future around.

If a safety is one of the more prolific tacklers on your team, you have defensive issues.
Hmmmm....Darren Woodson is our all time leader in tackles despite many great Cowboys LBs, and he had over 100 tackles in 9 different seasons for a team with a pretty good defense. It's not unusual for a safety to be your #1 or #2 tackler.

If it's not your MLB or your center fielder, that's when you have a problem.

Disagree. You give a QB all day in the pocket it won't matter who is manning the secondary

He was more prolific later in his career when we weren't winning. I guess this is where you tell me the Campo and Zimmer defenses were actually good.

I've broke down quite a bit of tape the last couple of years....he's not as good as everyone thinks he is out in space....when it comes to breaking down and tackling one on one. He missed quite a number of tackles. I've got no problem letting him walk. You just don't over pay age....w/ a guy going down hill in his career. Church wasn't going to get better.

I hate to give you credit but you are correct.

The point of FA to sign players on the upside, not those that have plateaued.

Jacksonville might have saved us from ourselves. Church is not going to be better than he was last year.

9 years with over 100 tackles...the all time Cowboys leader...come on dude. Do your research. Safeties are always among the most prolific tacklers on every team. Again, a MLB or a safety...who else would it be? Never anyone on the DL; never a CB; never a one side OLB. Safeties are supposed to be prolific tacklers...that's all I'm saying. You can't argue with that.

13-3 and got bounced in our first playoff game largely because the defense was awful.

So no, I am not upset or throwing away the 2017 season because we didn't drop our pants and overpay Barry Church.
