As much as I like Bennett, if it was a #1 I would have jumped all over that.

I'm glad the Cowboys didn't do that trade.

Bennett will win us a game or two before it's all said and done, I think.

I'm not sure where I stand on this as me and some of my co-workers argued about this today.

Martellus Bennett just strikes me as one those players that would go to another team and be a big time contributor on Offense.

I think the question you have to ask is how bad would it hurt the team if Martellus Bennett was traded and how big is the drop off between he and the 3rd Tight End?

This is a type of decision where you make it, live with it and never think about it, even if people in the media remind you of it, if Martellus Bennet doesn't pan out.

As I stated before the Season, I think some people just had way too high expectations for Martellus Bennett.

I would have been temped but one in the hand is worth two in the bush. Odds are you aren't going to get a blue chip player with that number one. That would be the only reason to trade since MartyB has first round talent already. Whether or not he gets to showcase it is debatable but I doubt most are going to argue he's not got first round talent.

You hurt your team this year for the chance to improve it next year. I can promise you Jerry Jones thinks this club can win a SB. That is the primary goal of Jerry every year.

Unless Jerry felt strongly he could convert that number one into a blue chip player next year then he doesn't even consider it. Why trade first round talent for the chance to draft what you think is first round talent? You're very unlikely to get a player better than Marty and you stand a 50/50 chance of getting a worse one and have to spend more money for that player.

It's a nobrainer to me. JMO though.

Think about it guys, two 1st rounders equals big money that the boys can't afford right now. Ware's deal and Austin's extension/new contract are gonna eat the cap alive.

What? $9 mil comes back off the books for TO.

If CBA works out a deal, the cap for 2010 will probably be some where around $200 mil.

Don't worry about not affording anyone ... esp two first rounders.

If we didn't take a first rounder for MartyB we are stupid. The guy is a backup and hasn't shown really anything.

Those who say they'd have traded Bennett for Cincy's #1 pick aren't thinking clearly....it's not all about the value of Bennett or the Pick.

You don't trade an integral part of your offense for a #1 pick in the midst of a season that isn't in the tank. We're hoping to be a playoff team...you can't trade a key player and then just say, "yippee, we have another #1 draft pick next year...we'll just scrap the 2 TE set we spent all offseason developing and hope the UVA kid can step in for Witten in a pinch.

You play out the season and then see if Cincy might want to make that same offer in the offseason...then you can think it through, but it can't even be a consideration right now.

Well said. The Cowboys use the 12 personnel over 30% of the time. It would be detrimental to the season to completely change your offensive personnel in the middle of the year. Like you said, if the Bengals offer the same deal in the offseason, I would seriously consider it. Martellus will probably never reach his full potential with Dallas anyway. His blocking has been well above-average but there are plenty of tight ends that can block.

Wow. This is a tough one! On one hand, we have Witten who will give us quite a few more solid years and is a warrior that rarely misses time. On the other hand, you have the huge untapped potential in Bennett. So tough... I think Jerry made the right decision though. There's just too much potential there to let it get away.

Depends if you believe he is an integral part of the offense.

He has 7 catches in 6 games with a 10.25 AVG. He has blocked well, but good blocking TEs are a dime a dozen, and Phillips could step in.

You may think he has some value as a receiving threat, but as every game goes by that he has little or no impact in opposing DCs are less and less likely to take him seriously in the passing game. I know I wouldn't at this point.

Too many people ate the cheese in pre-season. As long as we have Witten and with the emergence of Austin, he is never going to be an "integral part of our offense" Keeping him over a #1 pick just in case Witten gets hurt doesn't make any sense.

And to those who say he will go to Cinncy, get his opportunity and become a major player in this league you may be right. Cinncy was certainly betting on it. Doesn't matter, because he won't be that here with the best TE in the NFL in front of him on the depth chart, and way higher than him on Romo's priority list.

well I am glad Jerry used his head this time and turned it down. I cannot believe people would of. Jerry would of simply picked up another TE, Marty B. will automatically be better than him.

Thank God calmer heads prevailed on this one.

I guess I'm one of them. 7 catches in nearly as many games is probably a bunch short of what EVERYONE expected.

I don't care the reason, he needs to be more involved as does Choice.

Totally agree with that, john phillips is a decent blocker, but Bennett is a whole lot better and in time, bennett could be as just as good as witten if he applies himself.

so give it some time;

the thing most people are overlooking, the coaches, the TE coach who is john garrett, brother of jason garrett, must utilize the talents of the players;

i think we all agree sometimes the players arent used like they should be;

thats on the coaches to some degree;

and yes, sometimes the players must grow up

Laufenberg just let that be known a minute ago on the score.

I will put the video up of him saying it later or tomorrow morning.

pretty interesting they would give a 1 for him.

I hope I will live to eat these words; but I would have taken the # 1 in a heartbeat.

Thats the thing, the team would miss him this year.

And his value wont be the same to Cincy at draft day. But Id definetely revisit it in April and get us a top FS and LT
