With Witten, I think Bennett would be expendable for that price. You don't get the opportunity to get a 1st rounder for a guy you KNOW will never be much more than a #2 on your team.

If there was any remote chance Bennett could surplant Witten, then that's one thing but it'll never happen as long as Witten is here.

That being said, I'm not at all upset we passed.

That's the thing though. By the time Bennett's contract is up, maybe Witten is winding down and starting to take a secondary role (I shiver to think he'd ever play elsewhere). Bennett's a take-a-backseat type player right now, and a No. 1 pick is enticing. But I don't hate staying the course with a guy we drafted and, by all accounts, is heading in the right direction.

Even if some schitzo, impatient Cowboys fans are disappointed because he's not a star 20 games into his career.

Do all scumbag lawyers respond like this?

I noticed Peplaw does the same thing.

As an aspiring lawyer, I resent that remark.

John Phillips can block just as well. And I saw Phillips catch the ball well enough in TC to know he's serviceable.

Marty B is talented, but you take the first round pick.

After six games he has 7 catches for 72 yards, no TD's. Plus he got a stupid penalty today and he's had a few times this season where he blew assignments...

But people are turning down a first round pick that could help us get a future Left Tackle.

I'm hoping that maybe Garrett's saving him for later in the season. wishful wishing, I know, but...

throughout the entire off season this team harped on a explosive TWO TE offense and running game. That's how the coaches prepared and come up with the playbook.

We average over 150 yds per game running because of the 12 formation and is starting to get in sync offensively.

THEN WE TRADE ONE OF OUR TE?

Come on, people!! Are you playing for this year or next year? Our third TE can't hold the jock strap of our first TWO TEs. If we were 1-5, fine. Get a low first pick (Cinny's 1st will be in the 20s most likely). But we are now sitting 1/2 game behind the Gmen in our division.

We were all drooling at Bennett in pre season. Give the guy a chance to develop. We caught glimps of his ability. There's guarantee that the 1st rounder wouldn't be a bust like Carp (god forbid).

Good non-trade. I'm amazed some people think it would be so simple to plug Phillips into MB's role in the offense. Part of the versatility of the two TE offense is that both are receiving threats. I didn't see Phillips as anything more than a good blocker, but only decent receiver.

If Cincinnati wants to make that trade after the season, so be it. But why screw with the offense during the season???

I would have made that trade, but I guess time will tell whether it was a wise move or not.

As some posters have pointed out, if Cinci was 2-5 instead of 5-2 then you make that trade. However, we are not talking about a top 10 pick here, Cinci will be drafting in the 20s easily.

So hell no, I dont trade my #2 TE during the season when my base offense is the 2 TE set, for a pick in the 20s when I spent a 2nd on the guy originally.

1 and 3 to even get me interested.

I just read the whole thread and what is interesting is that this board is split about 50/50 on the trade.

The question is whether Cincy will revert back to being Cincy. If they do, then we screwed up. If the pick is in the 20's then Marty has too much upside. As someone pointed out earlier Marty will be way more valuable if Witten goes down with an injury. But if Cincy starts stinking it up and ends up with a top 10 pick then we will probably wish we made the trade. As it stands I am not upset with keeping him.:)

I think he has to much talent/potential to trade away. Not to mention hes huge and athletic and pretty sure no defender can cover him one on one

Bingo!

Bennett was a quality pick regardless of when drafted. A #1, high or low, doesnt even guaranttee that much.

Marty stays!

Just bumping this cause I have not heard anyone in the local media bring this up today which is unusual.

Here is the video of laufenberg talking about it.

Braylon Edwards commands a 3rd round pick but Bennet commands a 1st rounder? I doubt it. I really don't care to be honest. I like Bennett's potential and frankly I'd rather sit and wait until he develops if he ever does than wait and see whatever rookie we get next season develops. If a team wants to give up a 1st rounder for Bennett then there's clearly something there.

I find this very hard to believe. Bennett is talented and looked like he was maturing but he has taken a step back, at least it looks that way. Most teams would not offer a 1st round pick on an unproven player. Maybe they had him rated very high on their draft board but I still can't believe anyone would offer up a first for him at this point. That being said, I would have done the deal if offered but am not at all upset that Bennett is still a Cowboy. I thought Jerry said the deal was for an immediate impact type of player coming to the Cowboys so I guessed it was someone shopping a high profile player for a first round pick and Jerry said no.
