You're right. It is slightly embarrassing that I'd actually take the time to respond to you.

We should have taken that pick. Phillips is pretty decent and seems to be a good blocker. We could do alot with 2#1s.

Jerry did not make the trade cause Holmgren told him not too. :D

Unless Bennett becomes Jason Witten reincarnated, we should have taken the pick. I'm not saying we should have made the trade, but unless Marty B. becomes another Jason Witten, we should have traded him for a first round pick.

Wow! Giving that for a guy that I'll concede I knew absolutely NOTHING about when we drafted him. I remember alot of people saying he was a waste or camp fodder. Turned out to be a great job by scouting.

Just bumping this cause I have not heard anyone in the local media bring this up today which is unusual.

Here is the video of laufenberg talking about it.

They're saying CBS reported it.

If that's true, I would have made that deal in a second.

they are cbs. The only reason we knew it was bennett originally was because bill jones of cbs11 and blue star media tweeted it.

Jones and laufenberg are friends of the garrett's. They both have access to everyone in the organization.

IF babe said it on his show, its 110% accurrate.

Hmmm...interesting. I think had the Bengals been 1-6 or 2-5 at this point then maybe he makes the move cause it's a good shot at a nice high pick.

If I thought they'd finish in position be somewhere in the 13-19 pick range I'd probably have pulled the trigger. I love Bennett, I think he's fantastic, but to get a #1 pick, in that spot, for him I think I'd have done it and tried to get me that playmaking Safety we need or that outstanding young OT we need.

Maybe that's just me.

But since they're looking like they might pick 22 or later, at this point, I like keeping Bennett.

If it was a 1st for MB straight up, I think I probably would have had to have taken that. Unless Witten suffers an injury that kills his career, Bennett is likely always going to play 2nd string. If you have an opportunity to trade Bennett for a 1st, your in a position to trade for or move up for a very talented LT next year. I don't care how you slice that, we need a LT that can step in and play in a season or two. If we passed on that, I'd have to say that we were foolish to do so. On the other hand, we might be able to revisit this at later date. At least I hope that opportunity comes back around again.

Yeah.

They must think their offense is 1 tight end from being a complete offense.

If I were them and I thought that way i'd overpay a tad for a young talented guy like Martellus.

Martellus just needs opportunities. Thats it.

Bengals are 5-2 -> projecting late first and who knows about next years draft and draft pick value

I concur.

He's never going to, or at least not for a 5 or 6 years, because Jason Witten is Jason Witten. Does anyone really believe Bennett is going to be a primary target for Romo with Jason on the field?

He's playing behind probably the best guy in the game (who happens to also be the QBs BFF off the field), how many opportunities is he going to get?

Most importantly we need a replacement LT in this draft very badly, Flo's running out of gas. That pick could get us a solid OT for the next 10 years.

We need that a heck of a lot more than a 2nd TE. Foolish if we didn't take this deal.

There was an article about a capless year a few months ago that gave me the impression that it wasn't what everyone thinks it will be. If anyone can remember and re-post it it might help us all know that teams won't be able to go insane paying for players. As far as Marty B. being traded, Jerry has positioned this team to be well below the cap it seems and maybe he makes a move or two to get a LT in free agency or move in the draft. I don't think I would have been upset either way but good tight ends are not a dime a dozen.

This is absolutely correct. In fact, it's going to be harder to go out and sign players then it is with a cap in place.

At this stage of his career, unless it was Cleveland, St. Louis, Washington, or Oakland offering their 1st rounder, you do not trade Martellus Bennett. Behind Jason Witten, the only legitimate TE we have is Bennett. Phillips is great, but as a blocker, not a down-field potential pass-catcher, and he certainly wouldn't have made that first down catch yesterday.

Unbelievable that the same people that were whining about lack of depth would trade away potential Pro Bowl (he's got potential, okay?) caliber depth for a 1st round pick with a team that's currently at the top of their division?

Like slomoxn said just above me, good tight ends that are complete (pass catching and blocking) certainly are not dime a dozen. Bennett's got a ways to go in the blocking game, but the upside is worth much more than a Cinci 1st round pick in my humblest of opinions.

Plus you trade Bennett and now you have a hole in your roster. What do you do? Obviously the coaching staff likes to run the 2-TE set...there isn't a guy out on the street at tight end that I would even look at if I were the Raiders GM, and as I stated above Phillips is a great blocker but he is NOT the answer for what we've been trying to do on offense.

Man I dunno about that.

He has been an incredible blocker.

I've even heard people say they could add 30 lbs to him and he could step in as a Left Tackle.

No way would I take the Bengals 1st for Bennett.

Look who the Lions drafted in the 1st with the WR Roy Williams trade pick: TE Pettigrew.

2nd string anything <<<<<<<<<< 1st round draft pick.

We have the #2 offense in yards per game with almost no contribution from Bennett other than blocking. I fail to see how we will be crippled by his loss, and we have the means to address a weakness somewhere else on the team.

We also have a 27 year old perennial Pro Bowler already in front of him. We already FOUND a great TE, two is a luxury.
