Aw... I just read the rule for after the trade deadline waiver rules. All players regardless of veteran status have to go on waivers after the trade deadline. So in that case, I would not claim him. I would hope he makes to the FA market after 24 hours or so and then work out a deal.
Yeah nobody is paying him 61 million…..he’s clearing waivers.

The timing is, of course, curious. But he's clearly been a contributor in IND this season. If he goes on the open market, as it appears he surely will, have to do due diligence.

He’s probably been their worst LB this season. Also rumored to be outspoken and speaking out against management. At 5-5 it’s a very strange move.

I remember reading a story they were only playing him on the first two downs…he was upset about his role.

I kick the tires though. He’s been disgruntled for awhile and it seems they’ve punished him for it by playing him on the first two downs. Colts had issues with Jonathan Taylor too. Seems like a management issue. His demise has been far too quick I thought he was older…he’s only 28.

I think this is right, but after this year it's only an $8M penalty to cut him. Not chump change, but a managable amount. A contender with some cap space in theory could try to strike gold with a 28 year old former pro bowler the rest of the season and if it doesn't work out let him walk.

I bet he goes unclaimed, but I wouldn't be surprised if a team rolled the dice on him.

Oh... so I suppose this has been bubbling up to the surface for awhile...

Hmm that’s interesting….I still lean to unclaim….I also wonder does he already have a team in mind for when this happened? Typically this happens snd they already know who they are going to. A waiver claim would screw it up though.

Those cap hits make it difficult to take on
No guaranteed money after this year. You pay his salary this year and then can cut him with no dead money based on how I am reading the contract. Indy still has some dead money but that wouldn't pass to the new team if claimed

Any team that makes a waiver claim will still owe him $6.5 million this year. Base salary is $13.6 million in 2024, $14.8 million in 2025, and $19.2 million in 2026 with 2024, 2025, and 2026 not guaranteed. Missed 14 games last year but only 1 game missed this year.

The only way I think Dallas would consider this is if he passed through waivers without a claim and we were able to sign him a lot cheaper.
All the guarantee is paid out except the 6.11 this year, nothing is owed to him after this season if they want to release him

He has injury guarantees in 2024 that become fully guaranteed.
In 2024 Leonard has a $13.61 million salary of which $6.5 million is guaranteed for injury. That will be fully guaranteed on the 5th day of the league year. He will also earn a roster bonus of $2 million on that day. His cap figure will be $20.12M.

In 2025 Leonard will have a $14.84 million salary and a roster bonus of $4.2 million which is earned on the 5th day of the league year. His cap figure is $23.55 million

Odds are he goes unclaimed due to that.
