The problem for the Commanders is this just becomes a self perpetuating cycle.
Phillip Daniels is an old, serviceable starter at the end of his career. He's not someone who should make or break your season. He should be a replaceable player. Given that he's 35 years old, the Commanders should have already had someone in place in their organization to step in for him. Why don't the Commanders have anyone to replace him on the roster? They don't have any young depth, because they throw high draft picks at old vets and mid-level role players to fill holes for the here and now with little to no regard for longterm roster building. And now they've just done it again, and they're going to find themselves in the same exact situation 1 to 2 years when they're looking for Jason Taylor's replacement.
