Costa was needed before Fred. Now he is expendable. If he comes back for the vet minimum ok, if not, ok. They have the draft, UDFA and Free Agency to upgrade.
Except bringing back an OL the team likes, apparently.
Wonder why Costa and his agent didn't play ball, if the renegotiating report is true?
depends on how you define need.....
"Need" meaning he was the starting C
By that, you mean the team who first made him a starter, then extended him, and then reportedly tried to renegotiate to keep him as a reserve?
Or are you referring to a half dozen guys on the internet who say things to get attention and then are confused when the team then does the opposite of what they'd recommend?
Spin all you want, the fact that the team spent a 1st round pick on a center tells you they did not think Costa was "starting material".
There's nothing to spin. Obviously Frederick was a major improvement. At the cost of a first round pick. Why would anyone even debate that?
My point is that the team clearly did not think Costa was "starting material", hence using a very high resource to replace him. Usually players that are considered "starting caliber" are not usually replaced with 1st round picks. Normally teams use resources to improve areas that are clearly deficient, not merely to just upgrade.
As you always say, our pass defense is why we lose. Clearly, we have players on defense that are not "starting caliber". Hence, the expectation that Dallas is going to use their 1st round pick on a defensive player. If the team decides to just upgrade an area that is already decent, like TE for example, the pass defense would still be causing us to lose, as you always say.
Costa was not one of our better players. Everybody knew that. Frederick, however, was-as Jerry said- the Last of the Five Mohicans. The other four Mohicans were all guards.
The fact is, the team considered Costa starting grade. They thought enough of him to extend him. And, apparently, to try to keep him as a backup. At the same time, his spot was immanently upgradeable.
But the people who think he can't play-and there are a lot of them- are at odds with the team's analysis. Not me. And, judging by his agent's apparent willingness to let him try FA, there are probably some teams out there who agree with the Cowboys and not the dozen or so voluble posters here at CZ who've proven over and over again how much easier it is to offer criticism than it is to offer suggestions for actual improvement.
The "actual improvement" was replacing him by drafting a center in the 1st round.
As far as his market value, lets see how many teams offer him a starting job............................and am guessing very few if any, but we shall see.
Costa was horrible during the time he got to play. Absolutely horrible. Shotgun snaps were always adventure with Costa snapping. He came in cheap but has absolutely zero upside. I for one never got over us dumping Gurode coming off a prowbowl year for a second year undrafted free agent. Romo was running for his life that year. I'm so glad he's gone.
Totally agree with you here. This is one of those blunders by the coach to putting a lot of faith in a UDFA over a Probowl center. At least Gurode was a proven commodity. To think that Costa would be a better center was pure assanine and a major blunder by this team.
The problem was Gurode was no longer able to play center. In the pre-season game vs. San Diego, the players on San Diego said all Gurode was able to do was clutch and grab.
After Gurode was released he had try-outs with other teams and was eventually signed by the Ravens– to play guard. And he played a lousy guard.
The fact is Gurode was shot. You can blame the Cowboys for not having someone better than Costa, but Gurode was no longer the answer.
He still playing and actually started 4 games last year for the Raiders. He might be on the decline but he's still better than Costa even today.

The allegation that our team could not work out a new agreement with him may just be playing nice with his agent. If the team outright said that they didn't want him back he might not get as many FA looks.
