Costa Cut

so he was the starter. The Proctologist started for us; Petitti started for us; and on and on. Starting for us does not necessarily mean much.

You're right again. They should've played without a Center.

Yep.

Gurode was finished as a center.

as usual you are wrong. Gurode was only gone because he refused a pay cut. Otherwise he would have been starting. But not surprised you try and spin it your way; you were a big fan of all those jags we were forced to start the last few years.

And why was he asked to take a paycut?

Could it be because he was no longer the starting center of the team because he could no longer do the job?

Ah-yep.

Spin it however you want, but Gurode's days as starting center in the NFL ended with his knee surgery (and resulting increased girth... As I recall he was up over 335lbs).

JG on taking Costa over Gurode:

. "We felt like it was best move for us right now," Garrett said. "There's nothing purposeful in saying, 'We've got to get rid of all the old guys and sign all the young guys.' That's not what we're thinking. We're just trying to make our team as good as it can be right now."

OF course once he was gone the Boys were going to say that.

When you saw how PUTRID Costa was everyone with a brain knew the only reason he was starting was because Gurode would not take a pay cut.

And as bad as Costa was... Gurode was now (starting the 2011 season) worse.

That's why the Cowboys asked Gurode to take a pay cut.

He (Gurode) was finished.

That whole situation was a disaster. Gurode sho)wed up out of shape and the team seemed to believe they could "squeeze" by with the cheaper solution in Costa but that turned out to be furthest from the truth. It was embarrassing to see Costa out there against any real talent. There is no doubt that if Gurode got into playing shape that the C position wouldn't have been so remarkably bad that season. Costa was getting bull rushed into Romo's passing lanes routinely while allowing LBs continuous free shots @ Romo up the middle due to bad/minimal OL adjustments. Gurode probably would've simply whiffed if he didn't get his hands on the interior DL but at the least Gurode has NFL strength; Costa was like JV vs. Varsity bad. Either way, the team screwed the pooch on that position but now have properly allocated resources to solidify that problem.

Business as usual, wait for a catastrophe to sprout...THEN act accordingly(ish)

Time will tell if he plays in the NFL again but props for those who said he was just a guy. The line looked much more like a nfl line this year when they had a solid/good starting NFL center in there.

What is more concerning to me goes back to the talent selection/ evaluation. Every year under Romo Jerry has been "all in" to win a championship. Isn't it worrisome in 2011 costa and Nagy were the game one starters on the interior line? I am sure Jerry "hoped" that position would be fine. We have seen this type of miss evaluation way too many times under Jerry. To me, the players all change, and every front office makes mistakes. But the huge misevaluation of talent is almost impossible to overcome in today's NFL where every team is just looking for that inch to give them an advantage on other teams.

Well, of course the line looks better with another first rounder added to it. That goes without saying. The issue is, it came at the cost of, say, adding another starting caliber DT. I think we could have really used another skilled player on the DL last season. Doesn't everybody else?

The question was never whether the C position could be upgraded or not. The question was where we should be spending the premium resources.

The fact that Costa won a starting job, was extended, and that the team apparently tried to retain him as a backup tells me everything I need to know about popular opinions here about the guy's play. They were wrong.

When he's picked up by another team, that'll just be more confirmation of what we already know.

If Gurode was still a quality starting center by NFL standards he would have had more than the 112 snaps as a center since being released by the Cowboys.

Yeah, he had a whopping 9 starts total (both G/C) in 3 years since he was cut with 2 different teams and another team that he didn't play for in between. He was quite done.

So, after seven pages, we have come full circle and Costa is still a Cowboy!

But but....I thought Costa was going to be our starting center? lmao I knew it!

When they drafted Frederick, it was an admission that Costa couldn't cut it as a starter . They tried to trade him and there was no takers. Thy are just now realizing that he shouldn't be on the team and that he was overpayed. Every argument that you have used supporting Costa is slowly being shown as wrong by the teams actions. Don't blame me. I tried to tell you this many, many times a couple years ago.

I think this just shows the approach Jerry has used on olinemen. Poor evaluation and poor preparation. Gurode was done and there was not another starting quality center on the team, so they sent Costa on the field with poor results.
