How did A&M do both "seriously threaten to go to the SEC" and "showed the courage to potentially save the league"? It seems as if they could do one or the other, but not both.

It seems that Nebraska and Missouri were the first teams involved in any league hopping, so I don't see how Texas is getting so much blame. Texas has a lot of influence, but they seem to be reacting to things around them more than pressuring other schools.

Nebraska stood up to Texas and left. Nebraska took Texas' threat seriously (to blow up the Big 12), and they didn't want to be left out in the cold. Moving to the Big Ten was a smart move. It gives them a chance to revitalize their brand. Texas sure wasn't looking out for Nebraska, so Nebraska took action. Missouri wasn't going to the PAC TEN, either, so they tried to get out.

A&M showed some backbone and stood up to Texas. Therefore, Texas' led exodus slowed down. That gave the Big 12 commissioner time to come up with "projected" money and T.V. deals.

Oklahoma should be embarrassed?

How about you find a way OUT of the "Consolation Prize" bowls before saying anyone should be embarrassed about anything. ;)

You are just hating just to hate.

LOL @ A&M ever doing anything in the SEC. You think its hard to compete w/ Texas and Oklahoma in this conference? The folks at A&M would never see a CCG in the SEC.

Just enjoy another beat down again from UT and OK this year.

That is all.

Is that the same "beat-down" that Texas and Oklahoma put on Florida and Alabama? LOL.

Texas fans probably said the same thing about Arkansas before they moved to the SEC.

From what I've gathered, Oklahoma prefers the SEC over the PAC TEN, but they will not go where Texas doesn't. Staying with Texas means more to them. They could still play them if they are in different leagues.

I'm not hating. Go read the blogs around the SEC, and you will see the same opinion about Texas and Oklahoma. I guess those national title beat-downs are still fresh. No wonder they wanted to go to the PAC TEN.

Nebraska was butt hurt that the Texas schools got the league offices and the championship game in Texas. Osborns Ego was the catalyst for Nebraska leaving. They voted for the unequal revenue sharing plan each time it came up.

Nebraska will be like Arkansas, irrelevent in the Big Ten. I'm estatic this league is staying together. I hatd the thought of the PAC16 and A&M didn't save the league. I did like thier stance though because A&M is a better fit in the SEC than the PAC10. I'm glad they knew that.

I'd have liked the AZ schools, but Burkley and Stanford looking down thier nose at is did nothing for me.

What does the SEC do?
Don't ask anyone at ESPN. They seem clueless as usual.

Actually, I think they say that they are prepared to go with 10 teams. I don't think it says that they are planning to stay with 10 teams. Big 12 will be back to 12 or more soon.

Texas: ‘Horns to continue competing in Big 12

By JIM VERTUNO, AP Sports Writer 1 hour, 20 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—The Big 12 is alive and kicking.

The University of Texas on Monday said it was staying in the Big 12, followed moments later by pledges from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M to remain in a league that had seemed to be falling apart last week when Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-10) decided to leave over the next two years.

The Texas announcement came shortly after Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott confirmed to The Associated Press in an e-mail that Texas had declined an invitation to become the 12th member of his conference. Scott said Texas president William Powers Jr. told him “the 10 remaining schools in the Big 12 Conference intend to stay together.”

Powers wouldn’t give any details about why the school decided to stay put when asked by the AP. The school has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday morning.

A person with direct knowledge of discussions among the Big 12’s remaining members said Texas is clear to set up its own TV network and keep all proceeds in exchange for remaining in the Big 12. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because nothing has been finalized, said details were still being worked out.

The fate of the conference born in 1996 when the Big 8 merged with four members of the Southwest Conference has been at risk for days, and Texas emerged as the key to the Big 12’s survival. The Pac-10 courted Texas and other Big 12 South Division schools, while Texas A&M reportedly expressed interest in going to the Southeastern Conference barring a better offer.

“Texas A&M is a proud member of the Big 12 Conference and will continue to be affiliated with the conference in the future,” school president R. Bowen Loftin said in a statement.

Officials at Oklahoma State and Oklahoma issued similar statements, with OSU president Burns Hargis singling out Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe for his “bold moves and intense efforts.”

Beebe did not return messages seeking comment Monday.

The news that the Big 12 survived spread quickly.

“That’s great news,” said Scott Drew, whose Baylor men’s basketball team advanced to the South regional final in the NCAA tournament a few months ago. “Obviously, we’re very excited and pleased about the 10 schools staying together. It will be great to continue the rivalries and traditions.”

Texas A&M had represented another wild card, with school officials meeting with Pac-10 and SEC officials in recent days. If the Aggies are serious about leaving for the SEC, no matter what Texas and the others decide, would that prompt the Longhorns, Sooners and the rest to decide the Big 12 is not worth saving with only nine members?

Texas A&M regent Gene Stallings said Monday he wants the Big 12 to survive and would vote to keep the Aggies in the league if they don’t get a much better offer. Stallings told The Associated Press that keeping the Big 12 together “would tickle me to death.”

Stallings coached Alabama to a football national championship in 1992. He has said that if Texas A&M does move, he’d rather see the Aggies go to the SEC than the Pac-10, but his comments Monday suggested that would be a last resort.

“I know how hard all the Big 12 coaches have worked to make our conference the No. 1 conference in the country,” Baylor’s Drew said. “When you achieve that status, you obviously don’t want to see it disappear. The rivalries and traditions and fans support are what help make the Big 12 the best conference in the country.”

AP College Football Writer Ralph D. Russo in New York, AP Sports Writers Doug Tucker in Kansas City, Mo., and Stephen Hawkins in Dallas also contributed to this report.

yeah it is. Don't like how they appear to be ok without a championship game. It's one of my favorite games to watch all year.

It did not happen.

41 seems to have it out for Texas over this whole thing but they not instigate any of it. There are reasons to not be happy with how much power Texas has in the Big 12 (which was one of the big Nebraska issues) but they did not threaten anyone...at least not before any of this started.

Look, I don't "have it out for Texas". I was putting out an opinion that can be found on numerous SEC blogs. I'm an SEC guy. I don't like the elitist attitude that was coming out of the Austin. Fans in the SEC feel the exact same way. We don't care if Texas comes to the SEC or not, because the SEC doesn't need Texas.

However, don't tell us that we are "not culturally fit" or "not a good academic fit" and expect us to not be offended. The last time I checked, Vanderbilt was right up there with Stanford. Two of the best professors that I ever had, went to Auburn and Vanderbilt.

I respect Texas as a state. I have respected the Longhorns on the football field in the past. I have watched Texas and Texas A&M play. I have watched Texas and Oklahoma and Oklahoma and Nebraska. I know there are many great people in the state of Texas, and a whole lot of them are Longhorns fans. I know Texas is a proud state.

However, people in the South are proud people, too. Furthermore, we don't like being called "dumb". I expect that stuff from the East and West Coast, but I don't expect it out of Texas. It made more sense when I learned that the University of Texas' president was from Berkeley, California. I get it now.

There is more than just the University of Texas' side of this story.

Having said all this, I'm glad that Texas and Oklahoma will not be playing in the Pac Ten. That was the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'll tell you this, too. Playing in Oregon and Washington might not have been as easy as Texas and Oklahoma might have thought.

Average Annual income from TV revenues

SEC - $205 Mil
Big Ten - $242 Mil
Big 12 - $78 Mil
ACC - $67 Mil
Pac 10 - $58 Mil
Big East - $33 Mil

There's plenty of secondary pluses for the Longhorns -- and the rest of the conference:
  • They don't walk into a brutal conference schedule where they may have to play Oklahoma, USC, Oregon and any other yearly upstarts to get into the BCS. Now, with Nebraska gone, the road to the BCS (and perhaps the title game) hinges on the Horns' annual date with Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.
the easy road - one tough game a year

Basically, this deal doesn't make sense from any standpoint unless all the posturing, all the lobbying and all the butt-kissing was simply Texas trying to make itself more money with a sweeter deal. But the deal still stinks.

The Big 12 is only going to fall further back from the pack as far as TV rights, prestige and respect now that Nebraska and Colorado are gone and the Big Ten and Pac-10 is certain to keep moving forward. Yeah, the money might be better now, but five years from now, which is where Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott are looking, this is going to be a raw deal. Maybe Texas and the rest of the crew are simply taking a deep breath and will wait and see what comes next

The Big 12 couldn't have looked more inept or more incompetent through most of this process, but apparently Commissioner Dan Beebe and the league head honchos had some pull after all. Now it's important to learn from this and be proactive. Big 12, go try to see what Big East teams might be interested. Maybe it's time for you to start thinking big and expanding your profile for future TV dea

None of that is true. I am not a tea sip but that criticism is silly.

Nebraska was set on bolting, Texas never was. They wanted to keep the conference together. Keeping Texas recruits in the state (or to our podunk cousin Oklahoma) has been the major reason why Texas has been top 10 consistently. They didn't want to share that recruiting base with either Coast.

Texas stated all along their preference was to remain in the Big 12. And why not? They have more sway, it is their own show for the most part and now they can create a branded UT station which was a goal. This deal met every criterion Texas ever set.

Now Texas makes 20-25 mil per year which is a very sweet deal without giving up the recruiting base or any power.

It is not anyone's fault the SEC is viewed as a bunch of big dummies. It's also not anyone's fault that part of the country has the lowest incomes and the reputation for family inbreeding.

Texas was simply not going to sign up for that, even if it is just myth and prejudice. I was talking to a very wealthy Texas booster about this 6 months ago and she said Texas would never ever consider the SEC because UT had pushed for higher academic standards for the athletic departments in the Big 12 yet the SEC had the lowest standards in the country. I didn't fact check her but I do believe her to be accurate.

All that Vandy stuff is a joke. They are there for one reason... to raise the academic mean. Everyone knows they are not competitive in any real sport.

People on the coasts think everyone in Texas rides horses and carries a 6 shooter. I say embrace the stereotypes because you certainly can't change perception.

If someone says you are a big bunch of Jethro's, just say... the women sure did loooovvve them some ole Jethro, so tell your wife we said hello.

Texas came out of this smelling like a rose. They get the Big XII to basically cut them a blank check. They get to start up their own TV network. They get to even further unlevel the playing field between their conference competitors. They do away with the Big XII Championship, given them an easier cakewalk to the BCS ... and they'll still probably jump ship to the Big X or Pac 10 in 3-4 years when the BCS contract ends.

The rest of the schools got a pay raise to sit tight and a 4 year head start to begin forming their contingency plans for 2016. One thing though ... unless UT or OU wins the Big XII, none of the other schools will ever compete for a National Championship. If Texas Tech or Oklahoma State goes undefeated, the Big XII will be seen as having a down year and a "soft conference" and the National Championship invite will go to a 1 loss team in the Big X or SEC instead.

I think that Texas was going to get a sweet deal either way but I have to agree, they did get pretty much all they wanted. I don't know that Texas is going to jump ship. I mean, it could certainly happen but kinda think it won't. I'll tell ya what thou. I wouldn't be surprised to see Texas try and form a 16 team SuperConference. With a new long term deal in place (according to reports) with Fox, it would be very easy for Texas to go to the MWC or the CUSA or even the Big East and try to draw teams. The Big 12 could expand East and try to expand markets in Indiana or Ohio as well. Will be interesting to see what happens here.

Sounds to me like ALL remaining Big 12 teams are much better off if the the new TV deal does bring in 15-20 million each. That means many of the schools just doubled ( or almost tripled) their TV revenue. Sounds like the new deal is 150-190 million per year...so huge.

Also, recall that the Pac 10s TV deal is not that great at all. So really, Colorado is taking a big cut vs what they could be getting in the coming years in the Big 12. Even Nebraska is accepting less than full share int he Big 10 to get in...they say it is almost a 1/2 sdhare for sveral years....so they take a pay cut too.

Furthermore, the rich get richer but the divide between Texas nad the lowest Big 12 teams will not be nearly as great percentage wise. In a good good (assuming Texas eventually gets side deal done for its TV netork worht 5 mill/year) you are talking 25 mill vs 15-20 mill.

All of the rreamining teams win. And shcools like Baylor and iowa State have to be ecstatic b/c they came very close to being non-BCS.
