Am I the only one confused about us letting go of Brinkley?? I thought he was at least a serviceable player. He started for Minnesota and got a decent amount of tackles, and I saw him make some decent plays in preseason for us. I would think at the very least we would keep him around until Ro comes back. Am I just completely out of the loop on this guy or what?

He looked uninspired in the preseason games. I had reviewed some of his games with the Vikings and he looked like a decent 2 down LB; however, with the Cowboys he was very tentative and slow to react.

So players can't develop? I could be wrong on this, but that's what I gather from this statement. Leary couldn't crack a 2012 roster therefore her can't be better than someone in 2015? Not saying Collins isn't good or anything, just honestly confused by what you are insinuating.

I think his point was players need to develope
Not everyone is the best they are gonna be their first year
And we have the luxury of being able to set him for a season

Read this on another Cowboys forum

Has allowed 9 sacks since 2013. Same number as Doug free

I'll leave it up to one of you stat gurus to confirm or deny.

Jordan Mills had a decent rookie year, had a foot injury last year and really fell apart. They felt it was the injury and he would be better this year if healthy but has not been. Have read several blog type posts on him and reviewed fan messages on several boards and they all say the same thing. Decent run blocker, awful pass protector. Definitely doesn't fit the mold of a true swing tackle...as someone else posted, he probably only sees the field as a right tackle.

Being a good run blocker puts him ahead of Weems. Weems can't do either.

Oh yeah, I agree that he definitely is an upgrade. Don't really see him ever being able to play LT but if he can get back to rookie form then it's a decent pickup.

I just watched all of his preseason snaps and his full game against the Bills last year which had him blocking Mario Williams.

Williams is one of the best 4-3 DEs in NFL and he only had 1 sack in that game.

His pass blocking in the preseason looked decent in terms of effectiveness. It is not always pretty and if the QB holds to that ball for an extended period of time he can have problems, but he'll get a good initial pass block and not let the pass rush have a free shot on the QB.

He is a strong run blocker but is sometimes too aggressive and will try to overwhelm the defender but end not getting a square hit on him which allows the defender to slide off the block.

There is obviously a big question about him being a swing OT because playing the left side might be a problem.

He could probably start at RT in game 1 and hold up OK.

They might have to have Free practice some at LT and move there if something happened to Tyron with Mills replacing Free at RT.

Love how people act like it's $2 million of their money they blew. $2 million to Jerrah is the equivalent of your #3 from McDonald's with a Sprite.

It's not even close. He's a blue chip talent. Far superior to Doug Free.

Then why isn't he playing RT instead of backing up LG? I know, Garrett is dumb or he ants the team to fail by keeping the best players off the field.

Have I got it right?

@Alexander Nate Newton has come out and said that Collins is NOT ready to play tackle nor does he have the feet to do so at this level, he also said that he's not even ready to start. Nate said he was told by the coaches that I order to not overwhelm Collins they would keep at OG and then based on how he progresses they may move him outside to OT.

This doesn't mean that if the staff is forced to move him they won't...simply that Collins needs more development.

Newton doesn't know a thing. Collins is the best tackle on the team. So it is already written, so it shall be.

Jasper Brinkley is the same player that Fred Strickland was for the Cowboys in 1996 - a tackle to tackle MLB. Not particularly quick or fast.

In other words, not a particularly good fit for this defense.

It's cap space that people are concerned about, not Jerry's money.

I cannot see a scenario where Collins would not be active game day. If Bernadeau goes in for Frederick at center, than who is the backup guard?

It also wouldn't surprise me to see Collins in on some heavy formations possibly lining up as a blocking TE on short yardage situations. I could also see blocking for FGs and XPs.

A player with as much talent as Collins will be active game day.

If only 7 OL are active, which is historically what they've done, then Bernadeau is both the backup C and OG for that game. Then you would have a swing to back up the OT's. If Collins isn't the swing tackle, he's not on the active roster unless they go with 8 OL.

Speaking of linemen, David Arkin is on the Colts Practice Squad.

Isn't Mills the starting RT last year ? If they want to move Long to RT, Mills could still stay as backup, what am I missing ?
