So the idea of a swing OT may be gone this year.

If something happens on the Left side, Free can move over and Weems or Mills plays RT??????

@Alexander Nate Newton has come out and said that Collins is NOT ready to play tackle nor does he have the feet to do so at this level, he also said that he's not even ready to start. Nate said he was told by the coaches that I order to not overwhelm Collins they would keep at OG and then based on how he progresses they may move him outside to OT.

This doesn't mean that if the staff is forced to move him they won't...simply that Collins needs more development.

La'el Collins never mounted a serious challenge to take Ronald Leary's LG spot.

Leary couldn't even make a far inferior OL roster as a rookie in 2012.

This can't possibly be true!!! Alexander and Risen, our two most accomplished and intelligent posters said otherwise.

When you only have 7 active OLs on game day, it's not necessarily about best unless he's starting. It's more about versatility. For swing tackle, it's about who can play LT best.

He already has shown himself to be versatile enough to play guard.

That is fine and dandy that Newton says so.

Yet we sign Mills who also has slow feet.

So players can't develop? I could be wrong on this, but that's what I gather from this statement. Leary couldn't crack a 2012 roster therefore her can't be better than someone in 2015? Not saying Collins isn't good or anything, just honestly confused by what you are insinuating.

I think it shows they can.

Ronald Leary couldn't make the roster as a rookie.

Now a first round talent can't challenge for his job.

That shows how far Leary has come and what's in front of La'el Collins.

Collins has a higher floor and more upside than Leary.

Understood and I agree. End of a long relaxing weekend and my mind just couldn't grasp your statement for some reason. Thanks for the clarification.

Collins is not better than any of the starting 5 OL we have right now.

Next year, he can compete for Free's or Leary's job based on what happens with them this year and he will have a full year under his belt in this offense.

The coaches did not want Collins drowning in the playbook trying to learn all of the positions but instead let him compete at the LOG spot who he lost out to a player that has chronic back issues. That doesn't exactly inspire confidence...

Let him learn the playbook this year and let him work on his craft then figure what spot is best for him next year.

32 teams are worried about the swing OT position. Amazing that we are even discussing it where a few years ago we were arguing about the starters.

The bears tried to move him to left guard this offseason. Guess it didn't go well.

I prefer having to nitpick now than how illogical it was back in those days where there was arguing about the merits of Phil Costa and company.

Word from the Bears forum suggests that Mills was pretty good in 2013 but apparently injured his foot and was never the same after the injury.

After he struggled in 2014, it appears he lost some confidence, he was good in run blocking generally speaking but his pass blocking is suspect.

Mills at least has starting experience. Can't play LT, but gives the Cowboys a credible player at RT if there was an injury. My guess is that if Tyron Smith were to go down, Doug Free would move to LT, and Mills would move in at RT.

Speaking of linemen, David Arkin is on the Colts Practice Squad.

Brinks was awful, but I gather we are still keeping McCray around for ST's. Eating his contract sucks, but Jerry will make that off of parking and Miller Lite on Sunday night!

Not really thrilled with our ILB's right now with Ro out, and Hitch hobbled, and not knowing what will happen with Lee.

Yuck. I just watched some of his preseason work and he looks terrible. I hope Callahan isn't the only reason we've been able to find good talent on the offensive line.

Crazy to see Brinkley released with McClain out and Lee being Lee

Not really.

I didn't have Jasper Brinkley making the 53.

He was signed in free agency as a possible starting alternative at MLB before Rolando McClain was re-signed.

During training camp, Brinkley ended up behind Anthony Hitchens and Andrew Gachkar on the depth chart.

Brink can play some special teams but it isn't his calling card.

There was no reason to keep him.
