There were two big backs on Cincy's roster that I was eyeing in the preseason (similar to this kid) so I'm kinda liking this move

Terrell Watson.....Had my eye on this kid too. He is sitting on Cincy's practice squad...So It's not like they couldn't go get him. They must not like him.:(

Chrun baby churn.

So many around here complaining about RB corp should give the FO some credit for bring in Michael and now Smith. At least we aren't sitting still. We're making moves and addressing the situation.

Churning the roster doesn't mean trading for and signing scrubs who might get spot duty. It means finding guys who are capable of supplanting the starter.

FWIW, SEA fans are at least disappointed that he got snagged. I have low regard for the player evaluation talent of the average internet fan, but it's always disappointing to go to the message board of the team you just snagged a player from and to have everybody doing high-fives.

Any body ever plucked Weeden from us we would all be partying like it's 1999

Actually, I think there's a lot of value to churning spots 51, 52, 53. It puts pressure on all the bottom roster guys, which in turn puts pressure on the guys in front of them. And it costs nothing because there are a lot of players around capable of being #53 on a given roster. If you upgrade your position depth, that's a win. If you find somebody capable of supplanting a starter, do a backflip. But for the most part, just keep everybody on their toes all the time.

Or rueing, like we did when BAL snagged that undersized DE everybody was in love with a few camps back. These bottom roster guys are all distant long shots, but it's still fun to go prospecting and hope you hit gold.

Judging from the RBs we were interested in - Lamichael James, Isaiah Pead, and now Smith -- this is exclusively a ST signing. All these guys return kickoffs. I dont expect Smith to challenge our top 3 RBs. THere is a chance, though, that we decide to move on from McFadden because of his weak pass pro and adding little to the running game.

So when they put Kellen Moore on the 53, that was churning the roster? This guy probably won't even be active on gameday.

So when they put Kellen Moore on the 53, that was churning the roster? This guy probably won't even be active on gameday.

My guess is they picked up Moore when DET cut him b/c he had familiarity with Linehan. But then they wanted somebody with experience to backup Weeden and to have a guy to go to to salvage the season until Tony got back if Weeden couldn't win games. So they also looked for a guy with some experience.

We'll see if they stash Moore on the roster the whole season like they did Vaughan last year. If they do, that ought to tell you something about what they think of him. So, no, QB3 is a bit of an exception to the normal churning argument.

And of course, at some point they'll have to cut Weeden now. Probably after the next game, if Cassel looks ok, would be my guess. Then we'll bring in somebody at another position group where we'll actually churn.
