My problem with them keeping Paea is that they KNEW his knee was iffy at the time.

Marrinelli has no excuses; after 4 years virtually every single Defensive player was someone he wanted or signed off on.

All coaches have blind spots; Marrineeli's refusal to think that having a really good 1 Tech could make a difference is a big one.

Queue up the Marinelli Ivey Draft Dance Celebration.

Many of us on this board have been pointing out for years that we need a real pocket collapsing 1T but there is a segment on the board that believe DT is not that important and great defenses are built by drafting CBs

DT, esp a good 1T is an absolutely invaluable part of a great defense

Well said. I have been on that and wagon for years.

I like this except for Crawford at RDE. But it would be awesome if Collins can be a legitimate 1T so we could have two pass rushers on the inside.

Well, Crawford should be splitting time at 3-tech, but we don't have a right end better than him right now. Mayowa can give us a burst off the edge, but gets dominated in the running game. Charlton isn't there yet, if he ever will be. Ideally, we'd be playing Lawrence at right end, but you can't mess with his success. The only other player I think would be worth looking at there is Irving because of his length, but he did more at 3-tech against Green Bay than the others have done all year.

From Schefter on twitter right now:

Cowboys’ DT Stephen Paea told Dallas coaches today that he is retiring, per source.

Crazy, I know ...
Not at all, he was washed up before he came here, just another Rod hopeful like Carroll.

Looks like we played Irving at 1T this past game with Paea hurt. Now with Paea retired, I think a Collins/Irving interior duo would be awesome. It should help the edge rushers too. I say we call up Neal to backup 3T or slide Crawford over. It's too bad Gregory isn't available right now. He'd solve our RDE problems.

He actually was pretty good...but whatever. We will miss this guy.
He was gimpy from the start - knee draining in camp, etc. Great talent for sure, but was never going to make it through the season, stupid acquisition.

I think Irving was at the 3 and Collins was at the 1, but they may have alternated some.

Which equaled no run defense. IDK if its the scheme but any one notice our Dline barely makes plays in the run game?

I'd have to go back and look, but it seemed Green Bay was hurting us more on the edges than up the middle with the run, which I believe was mainly on the linebackers. Players like Lawrence would charge upfield, which put him in outside contain with a linebacker expected to fill the gap. If I went back and looked over it play by play, I'm sure the line didn't get off blocks at times.

Marinelli's scheme relies on the linebackers filling because the linemen, except for the 1-tech, are asked to rush upfield while maintaining some degree of lane integrity. If the 1-tech wasn't successful in occupying blockers that would affect the linebackers, but for the most part, I think they just weren't reacting and getting to where they needed to be.
