Saw this one coming a mile away. If it's actually coming.

Yep.

Hopefully if he does come here Weddle + Jones can improve on their 0 interceptions, 0 forced fumbles they collectively had in 2015.

It's been a LONG time since the Cowboys have had a playmaking safety.

Eric Weddle would be a great addition, but I would wonder what this would mean for Byron Jones and what it would mean if we drafted Jalen Ramsey.

Would both Jones and Ramsey play on the outside then?

Not that I'm against that, but I think wouldn't be using them at their best.

That would be a great secondary though.

You get Hardy and Thornton in free agency and all of a sudden you have a good defense.

If we draft Ramsey I bet he goes into the same nickel role that Woody and Jones did. The way we played Jones last year was an awful lot like FSU used Ramsey particularly in 2014. We would play a ton of nickel and dime. With McClain and hopefully better 1T play we can likely get away with it on middle downs like 2nd and 5.

Where did I say throw big contracts at aging players?

Shoot, in this very thread, I've clearly said Weddle only makes sense on a reasonable contract and if doesn't end up in Dallas, I'd like to see what he got before I criticize the front office. Weddle was asking for a boatload of money last year.

Other than that, you made some great points. LOL.

He had a much better year in 2014. Helps to look at the whole picture as opposed to biasing towards your emotional preference.

No one is saying w certainty you can't spend anything now. But signing 30+ year old safeties to big contracts isn't the best strategy IMO. I agree that Mario Williams would've been nice but I don't think he's the end all be all.
We need to wait and see how it plays out.

I'm hoping that it's a 2 year deal. If we give him 4 or more years I'll have kittens. I'm on the fence for 3.

I have nary a clue as to what you are talking about here. I am not putting Weddle down.

You sure you read my post?

I don't think so either but what happened yesterday showed that pass rushers are always at a premium. He may not be the right kind of guy but he's the right kind of player and if he wanted to be here for the right amount of money it's okay with me.

As far as Weddle...please...please...please....do it!

I don't care that he's over 30. The safety position is a lot about being in the right place and taking the right angles. He's a huge upgrade.

I so like the concept of making receptions painful in the Dallas secondary then...

That help?

Still doesn't make sense. It's a fact he was asking for a boatload of money last year. And he may still get a big chunk of change this year given some of the teams involved with him.

I'd like to have him but it has to be a fairly reasonable deal.

Not really sure what my "emotional preference" is.

You are not being rational and are discarding information that goes contrary to your preferred outcome. I don't have to know what the emotion is to know that you are emotional, frankly your tone speaks for itself.

Weddle was All-Pro in 2014 and didn't make the pro bowl this year. He was also banged up and made a lot less plays in 2015. His age of 31 looms large for his market value. It is what it is.

It's not valid. Cap will continue to go up. Cowboys will have some money coming off the books. You could have signed Mario Williams to help fix the pass rush and his contract is over well before Frederick is up. And Lamar Miller's $14MM guaranteed certainly isn't going to preclude you from signing Frederick in 2 years. Plus in two years, you don't know what Romo's condition is. He might be done which would be a huge cap relief.

Then, you don't even know about players you might draft now. Maybe you draft a kid in the 3rd round a year from now who turns out to be a great center himself and that gives you the luxury of letting Frederick go. Or another kid you draft at another position allows you to move on from a higher priced guy at another spot.

There are so many variables at play here to say with certainty that you can't spend now because you have to sign Frederick two years from now.

No thanks to Williams, whose too hot and cold for my liking. I hate 'turn on the switch' players.

I am not saying sign Weddle to a big contract. The fact he's out there with limited suitors would indicate to me he might be there for a more reasonable contract. But it seems you guys are trying to defend any and all inaction in free agency with things like we have to save money to spend on our OL 2-3 years from now. I think that's bogus thinking.

I don't think there's a united front in favor of defending all the FAs decisions. I just think we are providing valid reasons to support what we've seen so far. This happens every year, and the sky is always falling.

We are 1 year removed from dominating the NFC East, and last year we were decimated with injuries. Signing big name FAs isn't really something the FO is crazy for not doing.

I think we'll be aight. And I'll think we'll grab a few pieces to help us determine where the focus needs to be in the draft.

Not signing Lamar Miller doesn't bother me at all. And I'm okay not paying a 7 sack guy like he's the next Lawrence Taylor.

Weddle said he liked Carolina, Pittsburgh, New England and the Raiders. Obviously the first three are teams likely to contend. The Raiders are improving and are spending a ton of money, which I am sure Weddle is interested in. He has not mentioned the Cowboys.

Fish has thrown his name out there since we are on day 2 and he hasn't been signed and is implying that we have interest without giving any indication or proof of same.

Spin it, debate it, analyze it, whatever....

Bottom line is they don't seem to want to pay market value for anyone. If they don't come on the cheap, Dallas doesn't want them.

The Carr signing was not only a bust within itself, but now the team is gun shy about signing really anyone of consequence.

Are teams overpaying? Maybe, but those number are MARKET VALUE because someone is willing to pay it.

I'm all for not overspending on free agents, but you'd better couple that with drafting VERY well. That is to mean, your later round picks need to contribute.

You cant have a philosophy of building through the draft, then use the excuse that later round picks aren't expected to contribute when they don't.

Well, you CAN do the both of those, but youre also going to lose plenty of football games.

LOL. My preferred outcome? What is my preferred outcome?

Is my preferred outcome the same as my emotional preference?
