John Abraham had like 10 sacks last year for Arizona when everybody thought he was done. I still want Dallas to draft some young D-lineman in the draft but Peppers may not be a bad signing for a year or two.

I like Jernigan, despite this board's collective fart in his direction. I think the guy can play the 1 or 3 and that versatility is very valuable.

So maybe....

Peppers Melton Jernigan Selvie

The only problem with that is Stephen's affirmation that they do not value the 1-tech early in the draft. Besides, Nick Hayden. Hello?

I'd still draft rookies to rotate in. Seattle drafted two DL that did not even play much last year and they are still signing free agents.

I know it is not as hackneyed as the CB thing, but you absolutely can never have enough DL.

If you paid attention to our last Super Bowl dynasty, that deep DL rotation was key to our success just as much as the Triplets.

Yes, definitely add rookies for depth. Another edge rusher and at least another DT. I was just curious to see what our starting line might look like in the opener.

So maybe a 2014 starting DL of....

Peppers Melton McClain Selvie?

Are you sleeping well as an opposing QB?

If we were to sign these two, how would a rookie DT start this year if he's not a 1-tech?

Draft Jernigan.

Peppers-Melton-Jernigan-Crawford would not be half bad with the other guys rotating in

That Abraham was a bit different from the one in Atlanta that was asked to play a lot more snaps. Peppers should be in a heavily rotated role, and if possible, have compensation attached to productivity. That is how you make it work.

I'm a big Jernigan fan, I think he would be a great fit because like you said he can play both spots if needed and can pretty much play in anyone's system. He's improved every year so far. Seems like most here are just comparing him to Donald and then discarding him.

That's a respectable defensive line.

Mincey-Bass-Crawford-Selvie. Any concerns?

Well, I've heard them say in the recent past that they don't draft a guy in the first round who isn't an immediate starter. Which I think is a bad idea, but hey they said it. If that's the case and they sign Melton, then I suppose DT is off the list of 1st round possibilities.

Like that a lot better than McClain, throw in Crichton or someone a lil later in round 3 and we might be alright.

Well, if you had Nick Hayden on your roster, you would cross DT off your list too.

Peppers is a complete End though and had always been part of successful defenses, think he would be a nice get for a year or two, we can't go forward with what we have on the DL now

well i can see it for a year or two. but like many have said, $ has to be right. i prefer him over melton at this point. the more i hear about him and his eating habit, the less interested i am in that kind of player. but if they sign him, oh well. they know more than i do about the entire situatino.

One day it looks like we're interested in rebuilding within the framework of a "youth movement." The next day, we're 'interested' in a 34-year old DE who is entrenched on the downside of his career. Well, he had seven sacks last year, so I guess it's hard to sneeze at that, even if he's not what he once was. The Bears released him to save themselves from a $14 mil contractual agreement. I'm betting Peppers will seek considerably more than the Cowboys are willing or able to pay. Due diligence? Guess so.

wild, isn't it? except that we *were* willing to give ware around $6mil a year, so paying an older player isn't the issue. paying according to production is. reporters have to write something every day, esp on the 'net so i just ignore them for the most part. but if we can get a solid proven vet for around $5mil a year, i'm in.

Same here. I think he fits our system pretty well. I don't get the love on this board for Martin from ND, especially when we badly need Dline.

If you are going to reach out for an old guy pass rusher, why not get Jared Allen?

And I am with the folks wondering how this would fit a youth movement.

Allen might be a different case. Supposedly he wants something identical to what Ware got from Denver. He has also said he is perfectly content with walking away entirely if he does not get what he wants. I do not know about most people, but that would make me look elsewhere.

Are you saying what Julius Peppers needs at this stage of his career is Jeremy Mincey?

Agreed, if we land these two somehow I'd move down from 16 to somewhere in the 20s if possible and look hard at either Jernigan or Hageman.

Honestly, if Jerry can pull of getting BOTH Jerrigan and Hagemann I'll be in cloud 9. Then with our 3rd pick we should use it on the best defensive tackle.

the jared "pay me or i retire" allen? doesn't seem he's willing to work through money, just seems he wants it. i'd rather take a chance on the "lesser" players and the draft than give big money to someone who doesn't seem to want to play anyway.

At this point, I am guessing a ton of money isn't coming his way. However, he is one consistent pass rusher and has been a rock in the lineup. I had heard that money wasn't an issue...but he was looking for a place to win now. That could be the deal breaker there.

Peppers I see more as the mercenary going where the dollar is best.

At this point...if we sign a guy Allen or Peppers, I am convinced there is no plan. Just stick with the cheap free agents and the draft.
