I didn’t say there wasn’t a possibility and legitimate reason to think they can be one of the top teams in NFC.

What I’m saying is without that recent trend and history why do we need to hype as a SB contender ? What purpose does it serve except to disappoint .
I think it’s the nature of fans. Honestly I used to be the same way and have kind of been less
Emotional and more reasoned based each passing year of age.

Honestly the last few seasons I have really enjoyed the ride and had fun watching the cowboys go 12-5. That said I was still frustrated and disappointed when they lost each year to the niners in the playoffs.

Here we are again heading into the season with the Cowboys predicted by too many fans to be a SB contender without any recent playoff success.

If we aren’t even picked to win our division then we’d have to win 3 playoff games on the road .

I understand our defense should be better and we are revamping our offense but our new offensive scheme is totally unproven . And I understand the NFC appears down with most of the better QB’s and teams in AFC.

But why would we propel ourselves ahead other more proven teams and QB’s in the NFC like Phil and SF. Both with more recent playoff success , NFC championship & SB appearances .

Even with departure of Brady and Rodgers from NFC which appears to take those two teams from contention there is still 2 other QB’s in NFC with playoff success and SB appearances which I’ll be watching to see if their teams have turned around . One is considered by many to be one of the teams to watch for this year.

But until we can take the next step in the playoffs kicking down the huge monkey on our backs along with our QB’s back then I’d argue we are still more SB Pretenders than Contenders until further evidence.

This doesn’t mean we can’t have some positive mojo heading into this season. We have had two consecutive 12 win seasons and finally won a road playoff game but IMO it’s not enough for the SB Hype .

I’m looking forward to see how this team develops offensively and defensively. Can we win our division . If we can then our chances increase if we can get a playoff game or two at home. At that time then we can begin setting higher expectations . I’m not sure why some fans need to have this hype surrounding our team to get excited about the season.
I TOTALLY agree!!! Thanks for the heads up. No need watching this sorry team...

mediocre QB
Mediocre coach
Good Defense
Depth is suspect at many positions,

Equals a playoff one and done and could miss the playoffs
The QB is the most important component as we have seen in today's NFL. We don't have a SB caliber QB

If we were being picked to win our division I might lean more to that. And like I said if we do win division then are elevated .

Until further evidence I just don’t see this team winning 3 playoff games on the road but anything is possible. But it’s why I come up short with the SB hype.
I mean I’d like to think Cowboys have a good chance at winning the division. Especially factoring in typically there’s no back to back division winners.

Cowboys Super Bowl bound: “hey, cool your jets.”

Cowboys may squeak into playoffs: “hater!!!”

I'm actually not all that optimistic.

Hope I'm wrong, but the hype after an impressive season combined with OL concerns are eerily reminiscent of 2010.

I'm not convinced we're better than last year. But we'll see!

For one thing they have 4 good receivers this year. They had 1 last year. They have Gilmore at corner. They are better than the 13 win team from last year.

Well Nick Foles is pretty mediocre but showed up at the biggest stage . The eagles also had a pretty good gutsy good coach , good defense and a great GM . equals a SB.

The Cowboys are good. Your take is piss poor. If you don't like or team, coaches, and qb find another one.

There’s always a chance . And arguably a very reasonable chance . And if they do it definitely elevates their opportunity.

But not many are picking them to win division which places them needing to win 3 playoff games on the road . Which I’d argue is a much more difficult task.

They have a good shot at winning the division and getting the 1 spot.

The Cowboys are perennially "over-hyped." A far-better marketing enterprise than a football club. Long-time fans have internalized that reality...shaking downturned heads when "Super Bowl talk" enters the fan chatter each August.

Most have them at 6 in the power rankings. If anything they are underrated.

Let's go back to the 49ers game, shall we?

It's near the end of the half. 1:36 remaining. Score 6-6. Cowboys driving.

Dak connects with Pollard for an 8 yard completion, pushing Dallas to the SF 18 yard line.
It's now a very manageable 2nd and 2. Another first down and the Cowboys can chew up the clock and get a score. A Cowboys half-time lead of 9-6 or 13-6 looks almost like a lock.

But wait! Pollard suffers a gruesome injury. Their most complete playmaker is gone. On the very next play a perhaps-rattled Dak throws an interception. 49ers and Purdy are then able to push it past mid-field and Gould makes a 50-yard field goal with 1 second remaining in the half. A brutal 6, perhaps 10 point swing in a game where both defenses were stout!

In the second half, without Pollard, and Gallup gimpy*...and only one real WR...Dallas looks dead. But wait! Dallas defense shines and it's tied at the end of the 3rd. If only Dak and the offense had a couple of playmakers! They fade in the fourth.

What part of any of that loss was overwhelming or inevitable?

*he'd need two post-season surgeries.

While I agree with most of what you said, I must add:

1)We are ALWAYS overhyped. Goes with the territory. America’s Team!
2)We’ve been 12-5 the last two years, and have actually improved the team. Why NOT be optimistic?
3)Several respected names, including Jim Nantz, expect big things this year.
4)This is the time of year for hope. Do you hear anyone saying “boy, we’re going to suck this year”?
