Cowboys reach 2yr deal w/ LB Jasper Brinkley

Depth is great when you have starters you can count on.

Right now we have Hitchens, an injured Lee and no one.
Who else you want. Carter was nothing special and wasn't a starter. Hitchens was better last year. Did you really want to over pay for an average LB?

We have drafted well let see if that continues.

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have reached an agreement with linebacker Jasper Brinkley on a two-year deal, according to a source.

Brinkley has to pass a physical before it becomes official.

The Cowboys have lost Justin Durant (Atlanta Falcons) and Bruce Carter (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) in free agency, Brinkley would become the second free agent to join the roster with Keith Rivers, who played for the Buffalo Bills last season.

Brinkley, who turns 30 in July, started 11 of 16 games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2014 and had 54 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. After a three-year run with the Vikings from 2009-12, he played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2012.

Brinkley is a middle linebacker and two-down player, which could allow the Cowboys to use Sean Lee at the weak-side linebacker position as he returns from a torn ACL. The Cowboys have considered using Lee, who played middle linebacker in 2013, on the weak side in caseRolando McClain returned in 2015.

McClain, who the coaches credited with 108 tackles in 12 games in 2014, is a free agent and the team has had discussions about him returning. He is facing a four-game fine for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, according to sources.

Actually, I think it's the opposite. When you don't have LBs you can count on, depth is great and needed. When you have starters you can depend on and stay healthy, you don't need as much depth even though it'd still be good to have.

Trash from trash leaves trash. Are people seriously pining for that terrible defense we had last year returning?

Did not like losing both Durant and Carter but they barely added to one player last year combined anyway.
They combined to play 19 games last year. (Carter 13 and Durant 6)
In other words, it's not they were reliable themselves.

So it is determined?

I get it/. What at this point can be done to greatly improve it? Draft is not that deep.

We have 5 months to put a team on the field. NFL rosters will be changing quite a bit during that time. Teams get heavy in one area, and light in another -- trades are made, players are released.

This is not the end, the beginning of the end, or even the end of the beginning of building our roster.

The Jerry, Jasper & Jed show is coming to a venue near you...Be patient, they have a plan
and things look darkest before dawn. I bet the OL is working together to get stronger
right now. Calm down...Relax...Everything's not lost!

Go look at our Defensive Depth chart at Ourlads - it is beyond terrible. I already knew it, but that picture really puts it in perspective.
