Cowboys rumored to not inform Mike McCarthy before making the trade for Trey Lance

He was told. He was consulted. Once it was “GM time”, Jerry did what he did.

I doubt Shanahan was consulted at that stage either.

People just want to catastrophize
Why question him if @Risen Star is absolutely right?
The coach should have reign over their roster and the gm/owner should bud out. You think Jerry made any trades without Jimmy's approval. I miss having a coach with some actual balls and not a Jerry puppet running the show.
:hammer: :hammer:

Yet, all of these apologists who are now making excuses for Jerry's actions are the same ones who have been rightfully berating Jerry for the same failed "Jerry way" decisions the past 28 years.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

So your saying they didnt go back in all this and have MM reevaluate or look again and give his opinion??

I doubt that.
I mean if what Jerry said is true — that they got the call and he wanted to get the deal done before SF hung up on them or they had a chance to talk to someone else then there would be no time for a new evaluation.

I agree with every point you are making...

But after watching Trey Lance's recent 2 preseason game performances, after 2 years of being in the NFL, I honestly believe he was highly overrated and drastically overpicked. You see such supposed talent, but where is it? I don't see it. Neither did the ex-NFL QB who does QB video breakdowns for a living, and neither did Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers, hence why they were forced to swallow their pride, admit they made a big mistake, drop Lance to 3rd string and eventually trade him away. They wanted no more of him. This coming from one of the top 3-4 teams in the NFL in recent years. That's my concern. It would be great if Trey Lance could be coached up these next few years into a serviceable starter quality type of QB, but after 2 years of being in the NFL, he makes rookie Dak Prescott of 2016 look like a Hall Of Famer.
Agreed. It’s a cheap look at someone who graded as a 1st rounder though and you could work with him up to 3 years if he shows anything. Does Jerry make the move if Dak’s contract isn‘t up again? I have to think that if negotiations go sour he wants options. In a way we are in the same spot SF was in when they moved up for Trey — unlikely to see a top 5 pick anytime soon.

It’s a lottery ticket, no doubt. But there really isn’t any downside here. How many recent draft picks are going to get cut tomorrow?

This is the type of thread that typifies how messed up we are.

We have both Jerry and McCarthy speaking to it but our idiotic CZ hivemind, thinking we have done some Sherlock Holmes level investigations, based 99% on other idiot posts on this forum, think we have a “gotcha moment”.

We should all be disappointed.

In other words, Mike McCarthy had no idea Jerry would seek a trade at the umpteenth late hour which caught McCarthy unexpectedly and now having to make roster changes to create a spot for a forced player who needs years of grooming.
We will never know how many years of grooming he needs unless Dak gets hurt. We have all been in for three days now talking about the third team QB,

that’s funny

People gotta learn how to read between the lines when it comes to the NFL. Obviously he knew because he evaluated him before the trade. The business side is up to Jerry and Stephen.

No. You just can't see what's right in front of your eyes. Go look at the interviews of Mike McCarthy pre-game when he was unexpectedly told by the media about the move. Mike was shocked and short of words. Also, go look at Jerry's recent interview where he was asked if he consulted with Mike McCarthy about the move. Jerry got defensive while finding the right words to say while trying to suddenly change his demeanor from looking angry.

McCarthy is a team player. If he has a problem, the last things he would ever do is make it public or discuss it with the media.

McCarthy was one of the voices a few seasons back that helped to rate Trey Lance prior to the draft. I'm pretty sue Jerry used that when making his decision.

Besides, time was the major issue, Jerry didn't want to hold a meeting with everyone who got their feathers ruffled only to be interrupted halfway through with the message that Lance had been traded to a different team.

Why are we so concerned with a third team QB, someone who might not even make the 48.
My concern is being forced to occupy a roster spot for the next several years just to groom a 2 year QB who clearly needs lots of work to see if he can ever become starter material. That extra spot could be used right now in areas of need for an extra Olineman, RB/FB, TE, LB or NT which could help the team out right now.

Don't you get to dress a 3rd qb that doesn't count as a roster spot now and can only be used if the first 2 go down?

ND, here is what the new NFL bylaw says concerning the 3rd QB:

Full language of the updated bylaw:

One hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff, each club is required to establish its Active List for the game by notifying the Referee of the players on its Inactive List for that game. Each club may also designate one emergency third quarterback from its 53-player Active/Inactive List (i.e., elevated players are not eligible for designation) who will be eligible to be activated during the game, if the club's first two quarterbacks on its game day Active List are not able to participate in the game due to injury or disqualification (activation cannot be a result of a head coach's in-game decision to remove a player from the game due to performance or conduct). If either of the injured quarterbacks is cleared by the medical staff to return to play, the emergency third quarterback must be removed from the game and is not permitted to continue to play quarterback or any other position, but is eligible to return to the game to play quarterback if another emergency third quarterback situation arises.

A club is not eligible to use these procedures if it carries three quarterbacks on its game day Active List [47- or 48-players in 2023].

So maybe I'm not understanding it, but is it saying that the emergency qb can't be a qb? That last paragraph is what threw me.

As long as they got his opinion on the player, it really doesn't matter. And it sounds like they did, so this is much about nothing

Fat Mike wasn't going to say no, so what does it matter? If Jerry tells Mike to take out the trash, Mike takes out the trash. sheesh. It's like MIke turning down a buffet.

Cowboys had 2nd round grade on Lance 2 years ago. Jerry says they would have taken Hurts 3 year ago in the 3rd round, but the Eagles beat them to it by taking Hurts in the 2nd round - 30 picks ahead of Dallas. They've been trying to get a top talent for years to develop. It hasn't worked out with 5th round and later QB's.

Cry me a river. The guy who would have been the 53rd player on the roster now has to join the practice squad. It's not like Dallas is going to lose the guy.
