I agree with you.

I don't think Ellis was ever the same player after that really bad injury.

IIRC his injury was 4-5 games into that season but during that span he was starting to look worthy of his draft position.

Its been a long time ago, but wasn't his broken leg nearly as bad as Theisman's, like the bone almost broke through the skin?

It was just a run of the mill broken leg. He never had the physical talent to be an elite pass rusher. He was just kind of a crafty guy, even in college. I think he ran in the 4.8 range at his combine. That's why Jerry was ridiculed for taking him ... its not so much that he passed on Moss, lots of teams passed on Moss, it's that he passed on Moss and then took a guy projected to go in the late 1st round with the 8th pick in the draft because he desperately reached for need (as he typically does).

I'll just say, I like what I am hearing and leave it at that.

Here's the thing everyone:

Jerrah wouldn't be thinking about moving Ellis if what Hos is hearing wasn't good.

Sometimes you need to take a step back and look at the big picture. Read between the lines. Listen to the sound of silence..

ok, I'm out of corny one liners.

Unless I was swapping Ellis for a player or getting draft picks, I would at least wait until as late as possible before I cut Ellis.

Let's first make sure we don't sustain any nasty injuries at the OLB spot during TC/pre-season.

Problem with that particular idea is that if Ellis is the one who gets injured, then you're stuck with him for an entire year and there goes your cap space, unless he'd be willing to settle for an injury settlement, which, then it gets back to: there goes the cap space.

That's a good point. But let's say we do cut Ellis asap, and Spencer or heaven forbid, D Ware gets injured. I don't think we have anyone to step in.

I guess though that JJ would instead ensure he doesn't have to deal with an injury settlement and save the money, and JJ would probably cut Ellis sooner rather than later and take his chances.

If the Cowboys are really looking to move Greg Ellis, they have got to be convinced Anthony Spencer is ready for a breakout campaign.

I know Spencer is a talented player, but it'd be risky to go with him and have two rookies backing up both outside spots.

The 3-4 is driven by the outside linebackers.

Not necessarily. We drafted two other players who are younger and faster who could be situational players as well, so I don't think Spencer is off the hook yet. What this would do is give better opportunities for Butler and Williams.

That's a chance that has to be taken. We have to let the youngsters play and trust that our scouting department did their jobs right. Otherwise, we would have to keep every progress stopper we have on the roster.

so that way with keith davis signing in oakland,
we should get a 3rd and a 4th for chris canty and kevin burnett
then a 5th say for greg ellis,

Since the free agency period was over, I don't think we get anything in return for Davis signing with Oakland. He basically became like every other free agent I believe. We might get a 3rd but more likely a 4th for Canty. Burnett's contract with San Diego was not huge, so we are looking about what we got for Julius Jones and Reeves last year, a sixth or seventh.

i dont think the cowboys would be after chad johnson, what do some of you think, greg ellis for chad johnson;

That would be a steal for us. I know Carson Palmer is counting him out, but I doubt we'd replace a Terrell Owens with an Ocho Cinco. It would not make much sense. That said, Jones might just do it.

Ellis is a malcontent and overrated.

Ellis is not a true malcontent. He just is the walking example of the flimsy leadership that has plagued this team since Darren Woodson retired.

With Ellis, he'd say the right things to the media and work hard, but there was always a tinge of paranoia and pessimism to his message. He was never the type that could inspire greatness on the field. He could inspire others to be hard workers and plug away, but there always tended to be a mistrust of both management and coaches that I am sure bled down to the younger players on this roster, especially when he felt he was underpaid and not being played how he thought he should be.

Regardless of whether Greg Ellis stays or leaves, we have no one to step in for DeMarcus Ware. At this stage, we do not have anyone who could do as comparable a job as him. We could only hope to plug anyone in for him and pray that his return would be sooner rather than latter.

However, it can be debated that Anthony Spencer or one of the rookies could possibly step in and do the job as well or better than Ellis. He is a solid outside linebacker, but he has also fallen below his peak level of performance years ago. At some point, the hard decision must be made towards gambling on the future or continuing to hold tightly onto the past.

Igor Olshansky, Jay Ratliff, and Bradie James have all shown pass rush capabilities.

In college Victor Butler was very aggressive in pass rush. The videos of Brandon Williams show he can be too.

Anthony Spencer will surprise a lot of people this year. He's going to explode.

I totally agree with this. He is a player on the verge. Frankly, I will be surprised if he doesn't get double digit sacks or close to it this season.

I agree with your points, but I was hoping to at least see the rookies in TC before cutting ties with Ellis. Both of the OLBs we drafted were DEs in college. There is going to be a big transition. I realize we are sooner or later going to have to take the plunge, but I guess I was hoping to at least see if the two rookie OLBs can play, and then cut Ellis end of TC or early in pre-season.

That said, from a business standpoint, I can see that if Ellis were to go into TC with us, and he got injured, we'd stand to lose a lot. So, from purely a financial standpoint, I guess it's better to cut him now, if you're going to cut him anyway.

I guess we just need to hope that Spencer stays healthy (I don't doubt his talent), and the two rookie OLBs can adequately rotate at OLB.

I'm pretty sure the free agency period isn't over yet. I think I read that it ended in June. Its the financial parameters that will decide if he counts or not.

I think Ellis may fall under the "locker room lawyer" tag.

After the 1st release of players like TO, Pacman, Williams and Tank, Wade said there could be more changes when he said it at the time the 1st player that came to mind was Ellis. I would have liked to have seen Ellis retire as a Cowboys but with Dallas cleaning house and Ellis insecurities he may have sealed his own fate with the team

Constant complaining aside Greg has been a reliable player for the Cowboys.. I'm sorry to see him go but his time has passed.. Time to let the young guys show what they got.. I think alot of people diss Greg because we could of had Moss.

At the time Ellis was the right choice.
