And we waste a ton of time. This, to me, is this Franchise in a nut shell. It's the biggest weakness they have. They spend tons of money on flash players and grab scrap heap to fill in and they end up wasting really talented, generational quality players. Instead of building around them, they just try and piece it together and we get what we get.

Some might say that this is the modern NFL and perhaps that's correct. I just feel like there is a better way to do this. But hey, what do I know? I'm stuck in my house for the last few weeks and the next few weeks at least right?

the wasting time piece you mention is the core in my opinion. The time / energy / focus the organization puts into turning over rotting stones takes away from developing talent, building culture, and discovering untapped potential that’s out there.

Every single draft there are players from rounds 3,4,5,6 that end up in pro bowls down the line. I get it— some of it is luck, but some of it isn’t. Some teams pull it if much more than others.

What’s the thought process on doing this again, again, again......it’s like walking in a giant race car scrap yard with one key hoping that ‘maybe this one works?’ That is dealing in nothing but luck. We’re just tempted by the past.

Brown is trash. Awuzie and Lewis are good #2 and #3 CB., Canady was our annual "look how clever we are" pick-up. If we don't get another CB, this position will be our Achilles heal in 2020.

That may be the case, but I'm just saying what I believe the front office is thinking. Re-signing Brown and adding Canady took care of the cornerback position as far as it being an absolute need. Doesn't mean they won't draft a corner in the first or second round, but in general, Dallas likes to be covered so that it isn't forced to draft by position. I believe the team feels that those signings give it the ability to not pass on a better player at a different position.

If they add a vet FA (which at this point I'm not sure if there are any worthy starters left), I will be extremely surprised.

It’s not concerns other then a possible distraction. Smith and zeke will make a fine pairing out on the town. It’s just laughable, literally. This is why the Cowboys stay relevant and why Jerry is a great promoter but horrible GM.

Agreed. How little we remember. It wasn't all that long ago that we had a guy kill a team mate because of drinking. The team couldn't get away from that look soon enough so we adopted this RKG thing. Now that the fans have forgotten about Josh Brent and Jerry Brown, about Dwayne Goodrich and the two unfortunate pedestrians he ran over, we are back to normal apparently.

I really have no beef with this issue of dependency because I never ever thought we had gotten away from it to begin with. The whole RKG thing was PR to me. The NFL is still the NFL, like it or not right?

Hey gimmesix. I wasn't trying to zone in on you particularly. If I did it was inadvertent. I was responding to a number of comments. What does bug me somewhat is blanket statements that Smith will be paid 4 million dollars for one year. In reality he is getting base pay of 2 million dollars and if he reaches whatever incentives that compensation will double to 4 million dollars. And if he does earn 4 million dollars then who should really complain because it would mean he was not only productive but likely dominant at this position.

And I agree with your response.

If Smith doesn't pan out they will cut him. From what we've read it looks like he seriously has turned his life around. The question will be if he can readjust to the rigors of football and regain most of his defensive skills or playing effectiveness.

I didn't take offense. Just felt the need to explain that I wasn't saying this was a Jones move. Clearly based on the player's history, this is something Tomsula pushed for and had the blessing of McCarthy. And I think that's great. The people who had a relationship with Smith should be the ones who know whether he deserves another chance or not. Tomsula knows his character and his demons. He probably also has a better understanding of the efforts Smith has made to clean up his life than most people do.

Maybe Smith will fail. Addictions are difficult to overcome even when you think you have them under control. The best we can hope as people is that he's got the support and direction he needs to turn his life around. Best we can hope as fans is that he stays clean and his ability is not too diminished from the layoff.

Racing is a great analogy. The difference between Champions in virtually any big time racing is the quality of the team around the driver and the quality of the equipment a given team has access to. There are lots of really hot drivers driving for low level teams and we never hear about them until they get picked up by one of these high profile teams to drive. They were always talented but they never had the right seat.

This is the Cowboys a lot of times. They aren't building a team, they are investing in the driver and using inferior gear, so to speak, on race day. They are the team with the hot driver who is racing way over his ride who doesn't have enough rubber to win in the last 20 laps. He ends up getting overtaken buy the well sponsored big time teams who have the fresh rubber to race around him when his own tires go away. He ends up being in the hunt for the majority of the race, only to finish out of the money because he doesn't have the team.

I understand the move but let's be honest........... this is the exact type of bargain bin, leftover shopping Stephen and Jerry love and thinks solves their problem. The problem is these moves often fail and we are left with a hole at some point during the season.

The fact they bring in a guy like Smith tells you they know they have an issue at DE............... and yet their solution is go cheap as hell and find a guy who once had nearly 20 sacks in a season but that was like 8 seasons ago. It's downright infuriating with Clowney, Golden, Griffen sitting out there.

I'll be surprised if this works out.

You either know how to rush the passer or you don't. He's a young 30 years old, get him into camp and get him in shape. If he's truly rehabbed it's a good signing and the chances of him and Gregory hanging out and relapsing is slim to none.

Remember Hardy as well? There were so many people giddy to get him and a few, myself being one, wanted nothing to do with him for various reasons. The reasoning sounded eerily similar to Smith “what can it hurt” “as long as he can make plays” “he deserves another chance” “there’s no risk”.

He ended up butting heads with other players in the locker room, argued with coaches, knocked a clipboard out of a coaches hand on the sideline, etc. This team needs professionals and coaches who can focus 100% on coaching, not babysitting. Hardy was a HUGE distraction and hurt the team way more then he helped it, the same can happen with Smith and Jerry won’t cut him because he’ll look even more foolish.
