I am well aware of how terrible the special teams units have been.

I am of the mind that this hole could have been filled with a waiver claim. He's not going to contribute on the defense as a backup (and to the inevitable cries of how do you know? He hasn't contributed on defense in over three seasons - he's strictly a ST player).

Yes, I have no problem upgrading special teams. I just don't like making a trade for a completely one dimensional player, especially with the lack of depth on the lines.

Posts like this are evidence that some people just like to complain. Are we seriously discussing a drop of like ten spots absurdly late in the draft?

We have two guys on the team that are special teams "aces" (both of which I've never seen make one play), both of which are liabilities if they have to play their respective defensive positions. Not good.

Huh?

Bill Bates was not a good safety.

Kenneth Gant played in the nickel, but wasn't ever a threat to start.

Keith Davis was a horrible safety.

Quite often good special teams players are not good starters.

Now that the details are in, I can't say it's a bad move.

I don't know if it's a good one, but trading down a little at the end of the draft for a special teams ace could be decent value.

Yeah, this is fine. If he improves our special teams then it's well worth the drop. That drop is probably worth no more than 2 or 3 draft value points.

Good move. Probably wasn't worth 13 pages of fussing.

I think he needs to be the ace of ST in order to justify it, since it doesn't appear like he'll be a factor at all on defense.

What an embarrassing overreaction this non-issue turned out to be for some of you. My goodness.
Hope the new guy is the roster upgrade they expect him to be.

I don't see an overreaction at all. Posters stating their opinions that disagree with the team is not a blood pressure raising moment. The team added another player that is considered a special teams ace and he offers little if any help on defense. To top it off, they traded for him, when jags of his ability are a dime a dozen. Contrary to your opinion, I am sure that nobody lost sleep over the trade and I am sure they didn't need Xanax to calm them down. These moves are quite common with this team, but that doesn't mean fans shouldn't voice their displeasure.

Chances are that they could have picked him up when he was cut. Every team doesn't load the roster down with players that can only contribute on special teams. Most teams like the players to offer quality depth and special teams ability. Dallas seems to be happy with special teams ability only. It must be really hard for them to find players that can offer both.

Broaddus just said he is here to help on defense also. Said he will play on the strong side.

Raises the question. If jones plays as Spencer's backup, then selvie can backup ware on the weak side, the side he looked better on.

So what to do with Wilber. He can't play the strong side and selvie appears a better player to give ware some snaps because he can hold up in the running game.

So if true I wonder where Wilber fits.

I don't know if the Cowboys could have gotten him that way. They'd run the risk of losing him to another team. This trade secures his services.

Now if he's just another guy on ST it's a bad deal.

He wasn't cut. He was on the 53. Hence a marginal trade. Facts are important when giving opinions

Kinda hard to take you seriously when you have a crappy musician smoking a cheap cigar as your avatar. I think of Nelson from the Simpsons drinking a 40 posting on a message board. Lol

No issues at all, we need help on ST and by all accounts he will help improve. The cost, drop back ~10-15 spots late in the draft. If he can provide depth on the DL, that would be great.

I think the overreaction is that Dallas makes a trade, but its not to address real deficiencies on the OL. Hopefully they can pickup someone off waivers cause I'm worried about Leary staying healthy and the Doug Free experiment at guard.

That's what we said when we gave a 3rd rounder for McKnight.

I just don't like giving up draft choices for players who are about to be cut. I wish someone would pay ME for the garbage I'm about to throw out.

He has had very little defensive production in his career. He is not going to be a quality depth kind of guy.

Get your facts straight before responding to my post. I was we'll aware that he was still on their roster. I said that he could have been picked up when he was cut which seemed to be the direction KAc was heading.

Wilber never really fit anyway. He's just a casualty of the scheme switch. Unfortunate, but inevitable when you're making the change. See Greg Ellis.

I agree with that. I think he, Albright and even Crawford to a lesser extent are bad fits for this defense.

I was waiting for Wilber to be cut yesterday. I wouldn't be surprised if he is before the season starts.

If he can subtract a few yards from opponent's average starting position and get 15-20% of snaps spelling the defensive line (at a better level of play than the alternative), then dropping a round late in the draft is more than worth it.
