They traded for potential. It’s not rocket science. Mingo has a higher ceiling than Tolbert . That’s what they think anyway. Dotson isn’t your 3rd best receiver either. But you still did it let’s not act confused like these front offices dint think over are thr smartest people in the room.
Let’s take the biases out of the conversation for a moment. The Eagles did not get great value for Dotson, but they were desperate. Who is the Eagles’ 3rd best receiver? Ross or Campbell who have been cut or demoted a dozen times this season by the team? Dotson is clearly our third best now, and he’s an okay player. He will never live up to being 16th overall, but we got him for a 3rd, and got a 5 back. It was roughly the same value for Mingo.

If the Philadelphia Eagles traded a 4 for Mingo I would be rioting. It would be the first negative comments you’d have seen me say about Howie. He is the 3rd receiver on the worst WR corps in the NFL, and 3rd AFTER Thielen was put on IR and Diontae Johnson was traded. He is currently fifth on the team is receiving yards, just barely above Thielen who hasnt played since week 3. Now you could say his 30% catch rate is because of the QBs, but no one else on the team is having that problem. I did not know it could go that low.

There are two questions to ask when something like this happens:

1. The Panthers NEED their young players to develop for them to eventually turn the corner. Why do you think they would give up on a player this quickly with 3 years of control left for such a loss in draft capital? This is Shades of Lance all over again; they see him every day and are happy to dump their 23 yo 2nd rounder for a 4. They were already calling him a disappointment after his rookie year, and he’s been worse this year:

2. Do you really believe that Jerry was outbidding anyone when he threw a 4th on the table?

Panthers fans are calling their GM a hero for getting a 4 for this guy:

Marathon, this is a really, really bad trade. Both for the player and the situation of the team. You could have gotten a really nice DE, a DT, a S for that 4. This doesn’t make any sense for anyone.

He has never scored a TD in the NFL. That said the QB play in Carolina has been awful. The fact that he is dirt cheap and under contract for 2 mote years is a biggie. He is one strong fellow. Strongest wide out on the team.
So has the qb play here

In his defense though it’s not like Carolina is a model organization and know how to develop talent. Though Coker has looked solid. Some times a change of scenery is for the best.
Even so, it says alot. And a 4th was way too high, but par for the course for our buffoon GM.

I’m not saying it’s a good trade. What I’m saying is their intent was the same as yours your can argue how good of a trade Dotson was but at the end of the day they wanted to improve their unit and traded for him. They were high on Mingo and traded for him. No one is trading a 23 year old DE or DT or a S on a rookie deal to the Cowboys. The move makes sense the compensation is a reach just like trading a 3rd for Dotson.

I liked Mingo alot coming out. We got two more years of contract control for a guy that could be better than Tolbert without Bryce Young getting him the ball.

4th is more than I wanted to give up, but we need WR's going foward. Just hoping it crosses WR off the needs list

Dont hate it
It looks to me like there aren't many receivers in the draft coming up and this fills a need for the future. Mingo for the 4th rounder could work out well. We will just have to see how it goes. It does give us a physical receiver. He might help in the running game as well.

We can’t run the ball. We can’t stop the run. So, after sitting out all offseason, our GM decides to fix things by investing a 4th round pick in a project WR.

Make it make sense.

He's definitely not a win now move. Unless he finds football Jesus on the flight over.

The Panthers screwed up mightily taking Mingo in the 2nd. He was a 5th round rated WR.

Thing is, Jerry looks at players draft slots the same way I've seen some posters on here do: He was drafted high so he must be good. What a dumb way to evaluate.
He had a 2nd round grade.

Be prepared for him to be written in as the #2 WR next year no matter what. This is Jerry’s answer to the WR problem and will surely double down on what a great player he got.

Mingo is a great physical talent, but he was raw and clearly hasn’t developed his overall skill set if the Panthers gave up on him.
Don't worry. Wait until our coaching staff gets their hooks into him. Perennial all-pro.

Absolutely terrible trade. Jerry has nobody to blame but himself. Bears trade their Rb to the Bengals for a 6th; Lions get the DE from the Browns for a 5th and Jerry trades a 4th rd for a Wr who can't get open and drops passes. Just when you think it can get any worst it does.
