I asked halfway through the season, why should McCarthy want to return?
The guy has three consecutive seasons of 12-5 and he doesn't get an extension before the start of the season?
The Dallas Cowboys were such a fantastic team in 2023 that getting them into the playoffs wasn't good enough. Did this 2023 team seriously have the talent to go into the 3rd round of the playoffs?
McCarthy should have been resigned prior to this season. If not, then he should have been fired. What shouldn't have happened was the coaching staff going into this season without the security of knowing they were building something for the following seasons.
The team got ambushed by the Packers in 2023 but it should have seemed clear that they were having issues in December. They lost back-to-back games against the Bills and Dolphins and only beat the Lions because a referee threw a flag. It took a total Eagles meltdown, losing five of their last six games, for the Cowboys to win their division in 2023.
The Packers rolled into the AT&T with a three-game winning streak. They won six of their last eight against teams like the Lions, Chiefs, Vikings and Bucs.
How do you fire the coach when it is the GM that chooses the players, decides who gets paid and who leaves, and even hires the assistant coaches?
Now McCarthy is gone, possibly to Chicago and last year's #1 overall pick. Caleb will be in his 2nd season, you can expect a real spike in his performance.
We even have rumors that McCarthy wasn't in favor of giving Dak the contract. Who was right and who was wrong?
It had to be more difficult to run the team and manage his coaches with no vote of confidence from the GM.
If Jerry Jones had just been more proactive, either way, they wouldn't be in this predicament now.
