Got this info from the new Todd Archer article about Newman. Also if you're like me and most people, here's what "plantar fasciitis" is..

Definition

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation (irritation and swelling with presence of extra immune cells) of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot that causes heel pain and disability.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The plantar fascia is a very thick band of tissue that covers the bones on the bottom of the foot. This fascia can become inflamed and painful in some people, making walking more difficult.
Risk factors for plantar fasciitis include foot arch problems (both flat foot and high arches), obesity, sudden weight gain, running, and a tight Achilles tendon (the tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel). A typical patient is an active man aged 40-70.
This condition is one of the most common orthopedic complaints relating to the foot.
Plantar fasciitis is commonly thought of as being caused by a heel spur, but research has found that this is not the case. On X-ray, heel spurs are seen commonly both in people with and without plantar fasciitis.

Treatment

Conservative treatment is almost always successful, given enough time. Duration of treatment can be anywhere from several months to 2 years before symptoms resolve, although about 90% of patients will be better in 9 months. :bang2:

All this info is the Ask.com site. I hope Newman has a very small case of this disorder because it definitely is an injury that lingers and now I'm a little more concerned. It's a very rare injury because it usually occurs in men from the age of 40-70.

This isn't a rare injury for football players -- it is relatively common. You can't look at those duration numbers and apply them to Newman -- he's far younger than the group those #s are based on and he's an elite athlete - which the typical patient is not. It is possible that this will bother him this season, but the 3+ weeks off are going to help a great deal. The team will also have the option of resting him a good bit during practice each week -- CBs -- especially top ones -- don't need a ton of practice.

Tim Duncan suffered through PF last season - but never missed a game because of it. It's something that won't heal until there's a LOT of time off, so next offseason. But, he can play through it. It'll hurt like heck, though.

Yeah, good thing he works out the bottom of his foot all the time... If anything, professional athletes tear their body up more then the regular joe. This isn't a muscle thing or tendon thing, so I don't if he'll heal any quicker. It's like saying that he should bleed less if he gets cut because he's an athlete.

The good news though, is you don't have to heal it all the way to play according to what I read on here.

I'm really worried about the early speculation on this one. T-new is vital. We're deep damn near everywhere but CB. Kind of tempers Wades scheming if can't go.

I said it in another thread and I am saying it again here. Maybe we can get Pacman Jones...maybe he can get his suspension down to 10 games. Chances are, he will be released by the Titans. If he shows that he has learned from his mistakes, (which I know isn't very likely, but in any case) I would like to bring him in, especially if Newmans injury is of the lingering kind and we are looking to make a playoff run at that point in the season. He could be our return man as well.

I expect Newman is going to be fine. He rested last week and will be held out of the remaining pre-season games to be on the safe side but I fully expect him to be ready to go for the Giants game. This is listed as a strain and I'm sure the trainers will have him ready for the upcoming season.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to start talking about "THUGMAN" Jones.

you can never have enough corners. Unfortunately our GM only felt the need to address that in the 7th round despite having 2 corners on the wrong side of 30, and a bunch of nobodies besides T-New.

Well-we also needed to address LB(Spencer), OT(Free) et al more importantly.

Really guys-I think everyone here is hopping up and down about much ado about nothing. RELAX.

If a quality CB such as "THUGMAN" Jones is what stands in the way of Dallas winning a super bowl, then I will take him immediately.

Yeah and he can play the 4 or 8 games before his next suspention. The guy is an idiot who can't help himself. I like his talent but I don't think he can be depended on because of his off the field life style that still has not changed despite everything that has happened

Pro athletes are by nature physically superior to the average 40-60 year old on which these data are based -- further, those guys don't have a trainer working with them multiple times a day.

this is making me sick.what a way to crush my friday.if he is down we are in major trouble folks.

upon reading about this condition,i learned its an inflammatory condition that when given a steroid shot usually subsides.he can run on it but it hurts, they will numb the pain up for games.he will be fine.

If I remember correctly, Duncan said he didn't feel 95-100% until March (he was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis around october/november of the previous year. Of course, we don't necessarily need Newman to be 100% to play, but it will definitely be tougher since he's a CB.

That and the Spurs nonetheless went on to win 60+ games, and thanks to a bad Genobli foul, didn't get to defend their title.

Again-why is everyone so stressed out about this?

It's because there's a huge difference if Duncan loses half a step as compared to Newman, a CB, losing half a step.

True-but the Spurs are more of a defensive-minded team(unlike the Suns), so I would think everyone on the Spurs, logically, would have to be 100% healthy.
