Cutting Dez is a Huge Mistake

Dez wasn’t offered a pay cut and Ware was. Neither player would have been released had they continued to produce. Had Ware put up 19 sacks in 2013 he wouldn’t have been asked to take a pay cut and been released. Had Dez put up 1300 yards and 12 TDs last season he would still be on the team playing for his current salary.
There was more to Dez getting released than just salary, though that obviously factored in. Performance and attitude played a role.

No one is making you take down your Dez fathead, don't worry little buddy!

I’m not a Dez fan boy I’m all about giving honest opinions. I’ve been very critical of some of his performances but it hasn’t all been his fault and the film study shows that. All our receivers numbers dropped last season but he took the fall because he was making the most money.

I’ve already discussed in length that there was more to him being released than just money.

And his attitude was garbage.

He’s a passionate player that wants to win. One of his biggest faults was not being able to contain his emotions. He allowed too many things to bother him.

That's fair. Yes, he had problems containing his reactions, but he was never as bad as guys like OBJ. I agree that it was a bad move to cut him unless they could find a way to improve this team with the money they save. People love to bash Dez, but the guy was still a threat on the outside. Now they don't really have that (the jury is out on Alan Hurns, but for him to be successful, the QB has to be more accurate).

I used to think that to be 100% honest, but after last season it was apparent he put himself before the team. He was never a guy who advertised he was out for stat building, but the Seattle game specifically doesn't line up with the "just wants to win" idea. Again, I thought the same in the past.

I never got the impression Dez didn't want to win or was out for himself. He clearly played better with Romo, but never lobbied for Tony over Dak. Was he a pain in the butt? Yeah, but I never saw him as a selfish player.

When the team is winning in a game we MUST win to move forward in the post season and Dez single handedly derails it that to me is out for himself. And, that's beyond just wanting to win.

He has displayed it before. For example, we were blowing the Browns out in 2016. It was 3rd and long in the 4th quarter and Dak threw incomplete to Witten instead of deep to Dez. Dez got frustrated, walked into the end zone, raising his arms in the air and looking into the sky shaking his head in disgust. This is the same game he loafed on the 3rd down scramble instead of blocking for Dak which got him chewed out and the same game he argued with officials for pass interference calls instead of battling for receptions.

When you're frustrated you didn't get the ball in garbage time of a blowout game you're winning, it has nothing to do with passion and winning. It has everything to do with being selfish.

Something occurred after that game though because his attitude changed. He became a team player the rest of that year and it really didn't resurface until the Seattle game in 2017.

It did. I have to find the game. It was earlier on last season. Dak got a bunch of pressure and rolled to his left escaping a sack. The play was done and broken down, so the other WR's and TE's were scrambling playground style to get open and give Dak something the throw at. Except Dez. He was just standing in between the hash and the left sideline like a deer in headlights.

We’ll find out this season if this was the right move or it blows up in the organizations face. If we suffer through another disappointing season missing the playoffs and the passing game doesn’t improve, the fan base is going to be in a real uproar, especially if Dez has a solid season helping whatever teams he ends up with to the playoffs. Jerry and Stephen will be holding their breath during the 2018 season.

It won't bother me either way, out of my control so why feel like you may suffer? All I will say is that this offense doesn't have Romo slinging it and that is OK. We need to run the ball, protect in pass coverage and spread the ball out. We'll be fine. IMO some folks are too worried.

Nothing about this team makes me suffer I’m too much of a realist and understand the Cowboys aren’t going to sniff a championship with Jason Garrett. You can’t live with the running game, you have to have balance. You need to get the ball down the field in the passing game, creating some big play opportunities. We can’t depend on having Zeke for 16 games, injuries happen. Our passing game has to improve and that’s going to be a real challenge with no big threat at WR.

One thing is both guys we picked up are known for solid route running. that will play a role.

Cutting Dez was an enormous decision by the staff and FO. His manic reactions made it impractical to do anything else but what was done. May he prosper in another environment and grow more mature in the process. Sometimes, difficult decisions preclude emotional attachments. This was one of those times. Running a business is oftentimes difficult that way. Dez had his chances to demonstrate dedication but simply came up short of doing so.

Agreed. Having an average Defense doesn't help much either.
