In some sense having a WR that scares opponents enough to have them scheme to take him out does help out in JG's protection scheme.This is what people don't seem to get. Good teams don't overspend on resources that the scheme doesn't require. If Garrett's scheme isn't built on having a Dez-type receiver, then you either get rid of Dez or get rid of the scheme. Otherwise your salary cap is always going to be out of whack.
The obvious problem is when your scheme is designed around ball control in order to protect your defense and protect your young QB there is little margin for errors that turn TD's into field goals.
You can only protect so much and if you've got that much to protect you better be luckier than you are good.
