Hear me out and correct me if I’m wrong...
Clowney is in a contract year right?
If we give up a 2nd round pick for him then wouldn’t we receive a compensatory 3rd or 4th rounder back for him?
I think for a 1 year rental having Clowney and DLaw as our D Ends would significantly increase our chance of reaching and winning the Super Bowl.
Even if we need to sweeten the pot with someone like Crawford or whatever I think it’s a deal worth looking at.
Rumors that Philly want him too.
He’s going to be traded so why not go all in with this move?
It won't happen but let's estimate the true costs involved. If it would keep him away from the Eagles it might be worth considering.
The 2nd would be a 2020 draft pick.
A comp pick for Clowney after he plays the 2019 season, would be a 2021 draft pick.
The very best possible comp pick is basically round 4 pick 1. It's called a 3rd round comp pick but it is pick #97 which would be R4-P1 if no 3rd round comp picks were awarded.
In order to compare the R4-P1 pick in 2021 to the 2nd round pick in 2020, the trade valuation of future draft picks can be used as an estimae.
During the draft a future draft pick is generally valued as 1 round lower. In other words a 2021 4th round pick is valued the same as a 2020 5th round pick.
To recap:
2020 2nd round pick given up.
2020 Round 5, Pick 1 equivalent received.
Clowney's Tag is 16M.
The Cowboys could cut Crawford and save 7M.
They could "trade" Quinn for a player the other team is going to cut in order to get that team to take his guaranteed salary (6M of 8M is guaranteed).
That saves 8M (really only 7M since Quinn won't get paid for games 1 & 2 anyway).
Recap:
Crawford + Quinn cut/trade saves 14M.
Clowney costs 16M.
