Dallas should trade for Clowney

Hear me out and correct me if I’m wrong...

Clowney is in a contract year right?

If we give up a 2nd round pick for him then wouldn’t we receive a compensatory 3rd or 4th rounder back for him?

I think for a 1 year rental having Clowney and DLaw as our D Ends would significantly increase our chance of reaching and winning the Super Bowl.

Even if we need to sweeten the pot with someone like Crawford or whatever I think it’s a deal worth looking at.

Rumors that Philly want him too.

He’s going to be traded so why not go all in with this move?

There's a fine line between taking a risk and simply making a bad move based on the "one player away" fallacy.
I think we have a solid squad this year but I think we're a playmaker away from being a Super Bowl contender. I'm willing to take a risk on a talent like Clowney. We've been flirting with average for a decade now, aren't you tired of it? Let's take a risk for once and see what happens.

We have Quinn and Taco is coming on strong, why waste the pick?

And Armstrong seems ready to contribute, plus rookie Joe Jackson might give us something. No way i'm giving up a 2nd for a 1 year rental, when we are deep at DE and at the least might get Gregory back.

It won't happen but let's estimate the true costs involved. If it would keep him away from the Eagles it might be worth considering.

The 2nd would be a 2020 draft pick.

A comp pick for Clowney after he plays the 2019 season, would be a 2021 draft pick.

The very best possible comp pick is basically round 4 pick 1. It's called a 3rd round comp pick but it is pick #97 which would be R4-P1 if no 3rd round comp picks were awarded.

In order to compare the R4-P1 pick in 2021 to the 2nd round pick in 2020, the trade valuation of future draft picks can be used as an estimae.

During the draft a future draft pick is generally valued as 1 round lower. In other words a 2021 4th round pick is valued the same as a 2020 5th round pick.

To recap:
2020 2nd round pick given up.
2020 Round 5, Pick 1 equivalent received.

Clowney's Tag is 16M.

The Cowboys could cut Crawford and save 7M.

They could "trade" Quinn for a player the other team is going to cut in order to get that team to take his guaranteed salary (6M of 8M is guaranteed).

That saves 8M (really only 7M since Quinn won't get paid for games 1 & 2 anyway).

Recap:
Crawford + Quinn cut/trade saves 14M.
Clowney costs 16M.

DE is one of the deepest areas of the team and I'm not as enamored with Clowney the NFL player as you seem to be.

I'm fine with taking a risk, I just don't see this as one worth taking. I don't think he's the difference between winning and losing in the playoffs.

There are reports that he's not going to holdout into the regular season, but who really knows?

It looks like someone would be trading for Houston's problem.

I can't help but to wonder if he's moved as part of a deal for Commanders holdout Trent Williams? The Texans certainly need the help at tackle!

Because moves like this can put you over the top..

Imagine our front 7 with Clowney.

1 year and get back a compensatory pick.
And if anyone thinks we will be getting Clowney for a 2nd is in fantasy land. Its going to be a 1st plus more.

Why aren't you enamored with him? Eagles being talented on the dline doesn't stop them from adding to their strength every offseason. Clowney w/ D-Law on the other side and Collins/Woods/etc. inside would be unstoppable.

I think fans need to realize this offense is going to be a bit handicapped with Dak at the helm so the best thing we could do right now is build an elite unit on the other side of the football.

He’s not playing for Houston this year.

They are trying their best to get rid of him.

Zeke is worth a first.
I'd give up a 2nd and Taco for Clowney. We need an ELITE defense to make up for our so-so offense.

You do realize Clowney has never had a year with double digit sacks.

Our pass rush will be elite. Our DE's Lawrence, Crawford, Quinn, Hyder, Charlton, Armstrong, Jackson, Jelks, and maybe Gregory somepoinr this season.

What? Dak finished the season completing 71.6% with Cooper in. Now this offense has more depth/speed at wr, Jarwin will be improved at TE, and we get Pollard as a weapon to use behind Zeke. Moore as coordinator is the holdback if it falters.

Obviously we can trade them Elliott since they don't have a RB1 anymore.

Peanut butter Pollard time!!!
