Dalton throws for 300+ yds: fans say keep him. Dak threw for 450+ yds 3 times, fans say cut him?

I agree. But it’s also not DAL responsibility to overpay for a middle tier NFL QB.
Which is what has happened.
And now DAL is slow walking through what WASH did with their middle tier QB. Kirk Cousins. Who as you pointed out, allowed the market to pay for his services.
And Minnesota sucks. 87 million fully guaranteed dollars later.
according to those who know football and actually do it for a living, 50 of them in fact in NFL FOs, he is a top 10 QB....

Those moves need to be timely, trades like Coopers should be done when your a piece or two away from a real opportunity.
I don't disagree and the trading partner and the right player have to be available....for example Indy traded for Buckner....perhaps we should have made that trade.....instead of going for Poe, McCoy and Griffin and then cutting them.

It's a tough call... If you look at the starting salaries of all QB's that won a SB in a given year, you don't see them making more than 13% of the cap. The rest of the team needs talent too...which requires money. So the more you pay the QB the less talent you have elsewhere. Given that the cap is likely to DROP, how much is Dak worth? He certainly is a good QB...but how good? Does he elevate the team around him. A simple look at the W/L column the past couple of years is a good answer. Is he worth 20% of the cap given the reduction in talent it will precipitate elsewhere? How did the team do with him NOT making 20% of the cap?

Then again, he IS very good and getting better. Aside from proven QB's who have led their teams to SB's and DO elevate their team (like Mahomes), does -any- QB deserve 35+ million with a likely impending salary cap drop?

If they can secure him for 5 years at 35 per year, he's probably worth it. If he wants less time for a bonus payday later, maybe not.

Here's a big fact you left out. The owners for just this coming off season have approved the teams to carryover unlimited amount of money unlike normally when they can only carryover 5%. The Cowboys will carryover about 25 mil and the 35 mil that was agreed upon before time ran out on July 15, so that means it will be a 10 mil hit on next years cap. 10 mil to get a really good QB is cheap.

I am vehemently against building or trying to build either side of the ball with FA. you fill a gap. a position of need to put one side of the ball over the top...ala trade for cooper and then resigning him...but you can't build through FA. there isnt' enough money and not enough players hit the market. what hits the market in FA is scraps, older, injured, head cases looking for a last contract. looking to go somewhere for a year and cash in or be the missing piece per se....you build through the draft. and we have not done well in the draft on the defensive side. we have not picked any player of impact or dominant in years.....

and we have 7 of the highest paid position players in the NFL on the team, so paying Dak 32M this year didn't stop us from having to release any of those players. we paid mid level contracts to washed up has beens, because Jerry can't sign ant good FAs....its been his history....fix the defensive draft and we will have a better team, until then its offense trying to carry the team.

and I agree no one is bigger than team, but Dak's contract discussion per reports were along the same lines as what the QB market was, with likes of Wentz, Goff, Wilson, Watson....the hang up was the 5th year. Dak wanted to hit FA in 2024. that's when the cap is expected to jump 20-25%.

and I think Jerry made a mistake. he could have given him a 4 year contract as Dak wanted and then franchise him for the 5th year, which would have been based on pre-2024 contract values. it would have given Jerry the 5 year contract he wanted.....

I like that idea—sign for four, franchise the fifth! I wonder why they didn’t do that. There HAS TO BE a reason, with so much time and money and people involved. I know that some will say ‘because they’re stupid’, and based on our “success” in the last 25 years, that’s an easy assumption to make. But these guys ARE professionals, immersed in it for a living. There’s a REASON they’re wealthy and successful.

who you play against matters....how your defense plays matters....lets not forget Dalton has beatedn three, 4-10 teams....woohoo? or a so what!!! and those teams had their back up QBs....yeah keep hanging on to that 377 yard....what about the other two games he played a 4-10 team? I haven't seen any mention of that, but hey lets cherry pick for the sake of argument...happy new year
Like Dak he excels against weak teams, he also doesn't have the good OL Dak had to begin with. Yes Dak excels against those bottom feeders too and was great in those 3 loses.

2019 Dak was #2, and this year prior to his injury he was #1......
Based on what???? Please bear in mind, no single stat equals being the best. AR, Russ, Mahomes are the elite game changers in the league today. None of them lead in every category.

I don't have to convince you he is top 10....50 NFL FO personnel have also said so....somehow your BS carries zero water, because your pale has no bottom...if you know what I mean
When have 50 NFL FO personnel said this? The general concensus going into this season was that Dak was "around" 8-12 range. I have no problem with that line of thinking. The comment that i originally responded to was that he was #1. That is not a credible comment.

but give me names of those who you would target.....its not like we go to Walmart, aisle 14 and pick up a saftey or LB. who is really going to be available.....

Sorry dude, I don’t have the time or inclination to spend hours researching. I gave an OPINION, about a GAME, based on things I’ve seen and heard and read. I’m not a personnel guru and there’s a lot of stuff I don’t know, but I trust my instincts.

I’m certainly aware that it’s not like Walmart, and that the Cowboys have drafted poorly on the defensive side under Jerry. I’m also of the opinion that you build through the draft, and FA is just a crack-filling, supplemental kind of thing. I’m HOPING that they replace Nolan with Edwards, and between him, McCarthy and Will Mc, they can redo the defense.

2018? is that a long time ago? first three games of 2019? and lets not forget Dalton beat 3 4-10 teams with their back up QBs..... nothing to brag about......and he needed 9 defensive turnovers, a defensive TD and a special teams TD to get there.

And that got the Cowboys what? Nothing, that's what.

I think the bigger argument no one is talking about is ; can Jerry take a chance that Dak could be enough?

If he’s close to top 10 then you gotta sign him.

There’s never any guarantees. And if we need Cap Space then I’d begin with some overpaid pieces on defense which can’t stay on the field. And with Lamb and Gallup, I’m not sure Cooper is a luxury we can retain.

At some point if you pay your QB elite money then you may not be able to surround him with top 5 RB and WR while investing more on defense than we have .

And hope your QB elevates those around him on offense living with those consequences.

When we look back in a couple years 40 million isn’t going to look like one of the bigger contracts in the league.

In recent years these QB were the top paid for a single season until the next big deals were done. Wilson last year, Ryan year before and Stafford before that. It’s what we call market value.

yeah, but if you pay for more than you receive its called a bad deal. Then you are left trying to figure out how to get out of the mess you've made like the Rams, Vikings, Eagles, 49ers, etc..

I’d argue only the Egirls have a mess.

what holes? and how do you plan to fill those holes (names names names), lets say I gave you an extra 20M. tell me how much better this team will be with 20M? and how much worse the offense will be without Dak.....

You may need 2 OT. 1 safety. 2 LBs. 2 DTs. 1 QB. 1 K. 1 CB. Those holes.

I’m not necessarily sold Dak is the guy. But our front office is. And if they are they need to get a deal done. 35, 40 million doesnt matter if you’re “all in” which by every interview and comment I’ve seen , they are.

You sure do seem butthurt about it. Your in Houston. Drive up to Dallas and let Ol Jerruh know how much your butt aches about Dak.
Now I am definitely watching that classic movie "Deliverance" on Hulu.

Again, why should Dak take less than the market will bare. It’s not his responsibility to build a team.
True statement, and I see nothing wrong with that. As long as he doesn't get hurt when they decline, because their responsibility is to put the team first.

Oh yes, like investing in quality over quantity?
Jerry still got that Wallmart bone in his elbow twitching.

GIants game is a Dak win....

Dalton hasn't beaten a team with more than 6 wins...not even a team that's 8-8......
How many times has Dak? He found lots of ways not to last year. Losing 4 of the last 6. That's not elite. I wish AD was there to see how that might have went instead.
