Agreed…most likely a ventricular arrhythmia like VF or VT; the AED will not shock asystole or PEA. Sounds like he is in hypothermia protocol, whereby body temperature is reduced to decrease heart’s oxygen demands and is “proned” out to expand surface area of the lungs to breathe better. He will be sedated and paralyzed in order to keep body temperature down. At the right time Damar’s body temperature will be raised to normal level and he can be weaned off the vent.

As the OP suggested, being resuscitated for 9 minutes, if in fact that was the case, is not a good thing. Even in the ICU that can be problematic.

I’m seeing/reading a lot of talking heads on the different channels/Twitter acting sanctimonious, calling for changes, chiding the NFL about player safety, et cetera. It’s all feeling a bit contrived now.

This was a freak accident (suspected to be commotio cordis). Think of all the hits, tackles, and contact that have occurred in the history of the NFL, play-after-play, game-after-game, over the past 75+ years that didn’t result in this happening?

It’s absolutely horrible for Hamlin that it happened and prayers up for the kid. However, all this angst and eagerness to find fault and blame someone for this complete lottery of an injury is misplaced and misguided in my opinion.

I think that it's akin to the identifiable victim effect or maybe the bystander effect. It happened on live tv and so awareness of the dangers was right there for everyone to see. I agree that it was a freak accident and similar hits occur at all levels of the game all of the time. It's a shame and tragic and hopefully Damar comes out of it okay. I think what we're seeing is that a lot of people didn't really fully grasp that these sorts of things were possibilities. Sure they heard about it, but it wasn't real to them until they saw it. Those effects show up all of the time.

People saw this young man collapse and people fight for his life. They then hear about what a great person this man is. They feel powerless to help and don't want it to happen to others and overreact because they'd rather believe that such things are controllable.

There's is risk in almost anything we do, but truly becoming aware of it scares a lot of people (for various reasons). At least, that's my opinion on what it could be.

Hopefully a full recovery can be made and if he wants to continue his career, he can.

He seems like a bright and intelligent young man so I’m sure even if he can’t play football he’ll find a good path in life. Continued prayers for Damar and the Hamlin family.

Exactly. If he can pull through he should be ok if he can never play again. He has a college degree, made 7 figures in two year in the NFL, and has an NFL pedigree if he wants coach. His salary will be adjusted this year since he would up a starter, so he will make north of 7 figures this year alone. Life wise he should be set not resuming his career

OK...this young man had a had a Heart attack on the field and it was horrible to see....but, he chose this job, just like military, police officers, border patrol, DPS, first responders...etc..Thank God the NFL had great personnel to help this young man.....I remember a fellow teacher dying of a heart attack....we didn't cancel school.....maybe I'm wrong...I'm just thinking out loud.

My previous post was deleted because I didn't post a credible source, so here is one. The fatality rate can be 65% for the type of injury suffered by Hamlin. This includes a good laymen's level description.

"Most of the casualties of this trauma are young with an average age of less than 16 years old and a fatality rate that is high; 65 out of 100 dying. A player may collapse, either suddenly or shortly after the event, and become unresponsive and lose pulses."

Really up to the team.
He'll probably be on IR until the team reaches an injury settlement with him/current contract expires.

Being a day 3 pick sort of limits how much is guaranteed to him. NFL players need 3 years experience to be eligible for a pension. Getting those three years is big cause it also gives players health insurance for 5+ years after they leave the NFL, along with life insurance, 401k, etc...

Now, if his playing days are truly over the Bills could keep him on the IR for 3 years to hit that criteria/become vested.

I just pray this 24 year old kid gets better and is able to live the rest of his life normally. Not thinking at all about his football future. There are a lot of things he can do to be around the game he loves without actually playing.
