Scapegoat T.O. wishes Tony Romo well

12:38 PM Thu, Jun 25, 2009
Tim MacMahon/Blogger

T.O. says he still isn't exactly sure why the Cowboys released him, although he has his theories and is sticking with them.

He's heard about Stephen Jones' suggestion that Tony Romo wouldn't be able to emerge as a leader with T.O. on the roster.

"He was the quarterback of the team," T.O. said during his camp for kids today at Duncanville High School. "I think everybody realized that. It was upon him to adopt that leadership role and carry that out. Obviously, they saw that didn't happen.

"So, for whatever reason, I'll be the scapegoat. I'm not here. Now, it's his team. You know, and I wish him well."

T.O., who famously cried while defending Romo after the top-seeded Cowboys' playoff loss to the Giants two years ago, claimed to be confused when asked how the relationship between the quarterback and receiver changed last season.

"Your guess is as good as mine," T.O. said. "I don't know what happened. Obviously, somebody is lying somewhere. I don't know what happened. All I know is that I'm not here. I'm with the Buffalo Bills, and I'll leave it at that."

Much more T.O. coverage to come.

I look at it like this. What did TO bring to this team that precluded people from doing their jobs? Does anyone think for one second that the Cowboys won't be under a media firestorm this season? ESPECIALLY if they don't win and often.

He brought his baggage with him that previously destroyed two teams. I liken this to Jerry Jumping off a two story builing and not being aware of the consequence until he sees his leg broken. Dumb move.

What's TO's problem with quarterbacks? He's had a problem with all 3 of them now. Why doesn't he just become a quarterback so he won't have to worry about people "backstabbing him."

Hello.....He was a scapegoat.

They were talking about it on 103.3.

T.O. said Romo had no Leadership (which is TRUE) but I would consider checking out a podcast or an article to get the full scoop.

I'm just going by what I heard from the radio.

T.O. is just being a big baby--he's done it his entire career. He's just in the line with a long list of receivers who's only motto is "gimme the damn ball" and "all the glory".

The sad thing is, that's what people will really remember him for when he hangs his helmet up.

Right...

Stephen Jones said it best. If Irvin didn't buy into Troy, Troy would've had problems... because younger guys looked up to Mike the same way younger guys look up to Owens.

So because Owens stopped buying into Romo and that maybe hurt Romo's rep with younger players, it's an indictment of Romo's "leadership". Sorry, I'm not buying it.

Too bad Romo's not Carson Palmer... nobody questions Palmer's "leadership" even though he's gone through similar craziness with a WR (Chad) and he also hasn't won a playoff game. Hmmmm... could it have to anything to do with... this? :star:

Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey had to be out of the picture for Eli Manning to become a "leader".

TO you got 99 problems but a scapegoat isn't one.

I'm sure he'll go below the 1,000 yard mark in Buffalo because he was already in decline here. Then he'll probably jump to another team and produce even less. Then he'll retire a big troublemaker/crybaby who better not go into the HOF as a Cowboy.

Incorrect.

Tony Romo may not have been as big a leader as Terrell Owens thought he could be. Romo may not have been the leader the front office wanted him to be.

But it's flat silly to claim he had no leadership.

Romo spends as much time as anyone at Valley Ranch improving his game every off-season.

That is leadership.

Romo was a much better example in this regard that Owens, who opted to seclude himself in South Beach with a private trainer instead of staying in Dallas to be around the starting quarterback and the rest of the team.

If you were in the front office, who would you want the players to emulate?

Releasing TO shows how desperate Jerry is to justify his foolish decsion to hitch his wagon to tony romo. They are admitting that they know romo doesn't have the stones to take control, and are keeping their fingers crossed/praying that the move will pay off, and if/when it doesn't then who else is Jerry and everyone else going to blame for romo's inneffectiveness?

Will it be Roy Williams, who we probably already know won't replace TO's production because he can't get WIDE OPEN? Or will it be the offensive line, who will be slammed beacause they only give romo 6-7 seconds to throw the ball, and he gets sacked when he can't hit a receiver who isn't wide open. Or will it be Jason Garrett because he isn't the one fumbling or throwing interceptions, but because his offense is "to predictable." I don't recall that being an issue in 2007.

When will Jerry learn that as brilliant as he is in business, his football knowledge, especially at qb is seriously lacking. Carter, Hutch, Henson, Leaf, Stoerner, romo?

And how many excellent quarterbacks will Jerry pass on coming out of college until he stops making excuses for romo. Perhaps this season when romo is among the league leader in turnovers and the team goes 5-11.

my opinion of Mcnabb dropped when I heard TO's side fo the story.

I mean I hated him already but I really believed TO.

I feel like a fool, TO is a team wrecker. You don't try to compete with your QB for a leadership role.

If trent edwards wasn't already ruined he will be after a season or two with this maroon.

I think absolutely TO was made a scapegoat...at least to some degree. But I do think he was a big part of what divided that locker room and the severe change in personailty on Romo's part. But yes, it was a poor group effort plus a lot of bad luck that led to that downward spiral....so he was to some degree a scapegoat by definition.
