A look at the most scrutinized player in the NFL:

What this world needs is another opinion on Tony Romo. I’m certain of it.

Please bear with me and resist the urge to eye-roll. Throwing my hat in the contributors ring around here should call for an initiation of sorts, complete with a formal declaration, as in Name, Rank, Serial Number, and Stated Position on Tony Romo. I know and accept that what I say here will be held against me forever more, and might even prompt an audit.

Some of us just started missing him 4 years ago, hope like hell this surgery will bring him back of old.....

I'm honestly not trying to sound like a **** here (not sure what gets censored lol)...but if Romo were to retire tomorrow, what exactly is it that you're going to miss?

All the wins?...Cowboys haven't had a winning season in going on 5 years now.

All the playoff appearances?...Again, the Cowboys haven't been to the playoffs going on 5 years now. And they've only gone to the playoffs 3 times in Romo's 8 years as starter.

So what exactly is it that Cowboys fans are gonna miss? Calculating the mathematical possibilities of making the playoffs in week 15? Games that are "entertaining" during an otherwise unsuccessful year? Having the "Is Romo elite" debate every other week in the offseason?

Taking the assumption that Romo's replacement will turn out to be Quincy Carter version 2.0, the only thing I can see Dallas fans missing after Romo hangs it up would be the sense of legitimate hope that having him behind center gives you. Anything and everything seems possible when you have a franchise QB.

You think that was his fault? Without him, the last five seasons would have been over in October.

how do we know that exactly when there's never been any competition at the qb position? When Kitna came in, everything didn't completely melt down.

I never assigned blame, it's irrelevant to me actually.

But again...what exactly will Cowboys fans miss if Romo were to retire tomorrow?

Back min the day before Texas Stadium and the Highland Park set bought the good de seats they played in the Cotton Bowl.

This was back when people would razz the players.

"Toss the bum out!"

Meredith took guff from Landry because Meredith was a playa. And guff from the fans because he was beat to smithereens most to the time.

I go back as far as 1968 with the Cowboys. I know they played in the Cotton Bowl, but I didn't know about all the other stuff firsthand. I've learned about it since because I tried to find out as much as I could about the team's history. I also remember my Dad talked about Don getting beat up a lot. I would rank Don as one of my all-time favorites even though I didn't get to see him play much.

great read. I am a Romo fan, and I am always educating these Romo haters, they always do the same thing, they switch to bashing Jerry or Garrett or both.

Has Tony had it bad?

I'd say he kind of has, Wade and Garrett as his HC's? That's just awful.
Think about the HC's for the best and most well known QB's in the NFL (in this era) and I challenge you to find one that has had it worse than Romo in that regard.
Brees, Manning's, Brady, Ben, Wilson, Kaepernick, Rivers, Rodgers, Cutler, Ryan, even Flacco and Alex Smith

Under wade he had a 13-3 record. Isnt that on par with the best of those guys? Romo has had his chance to win. Has he not?

So you're telling me everyone but Romo sucks?
Hall of Fame Tight End Jason WItten?
One of the best WR's Dez Bryant? Terrance Williams?
Travis Frederick sucks? Tyron Smith?
Demarco Murray?

Ty the defense which has been terrible since 2010.

It'll be the outstanding QB play. Think back to RGIII's rookie season for an example. Or, if that's too bittersweet, you can go back to Sammy Baugh or Sonny Jergenson.

Yes he has, that's why I only said he's had it worse than almost anybody in that regard, as in HC's.
Never said he hasn't had a chance to win.
Saying that, if he'd had some of the HC's other successful QB's around the league have had, he would've had a heck of a lot more chances to win.

So basically what you'd miss would be "entertaining games during an otherwise unsuccessful season"...that's what outstanding QB play without playoffs or a winning record results in. I'm guessing that if merely "good" QB play replaces Romo's level of play but the Cowboys somehow end up making the playoffs, it will go a long ways to helping ease the pain of missing the guy.

He had one of the best HC in the history of the game(parcells) 2007. Had the #3 offense and #9 defense. Still couldnt get it done. He's great from sept to nov. But at the end of the yr, i dont want him as the Cowboys qb. Thats all im saying

When Romo is gone and we go back into QB purgatory maybe some of the Romo haters will finally realize what a gem we had. Too bad he was hamstrung with Wade and trainee Garrett. Just imagine if we had a real coach for his entire career something he would have if he played for Seattle or San Francisco..
