Deon Anderson Arrested

1. Unless something else horrible turns up in this story, there seems little basis for thinking it's cause for releasing the guy.

2. People keep saying that the team can do better than Anderson, but no one turns up to challenge him. In other words, for what he does (blocking and ST play), the Cowboys can't do better -- at least not at an acceptable price.

3. I'd LIKE to see someone challenge Anderson. There's absolutely no reason that your FB can't be an offensive weapon in addition to being a good blocker. Except for the fact that the guys in college who might fill that role are either NOT blockers playing in a non-pro-style offense or ARE blockers in a pro-style offense -- so there's no one (or very few) being trained to be both.

Sounds pretty harmless to me.

If he's not a Cowboy, he does not get taken in and this is not in the media. Unless he was drunk and/or trying to fight someone...this is a non-issue (other than being slack in paying his parking tickets).

John Phillips basically took his job from him in the last few games last year. He played more fullback snaps than Anderson.

In 2009, Dallas was 3-deep at TE (Witten, Bennett, and Phillips) and 4-deep at RB (Barber, Jones, Choice, and Anderson). That's a total of 7 spots. If Phillips can work on his blitz puckup and blocking (he's not bad at that now), then he can easily take Anderson's spot as the full-time H-back/FB (Anderson is juat a FB), because unlike Anderson, Phillips is a receiving threat out of the backfield also.

That way, Dallas can cut those 7 spots down to 6, perhaps opening an extra spot for an additional OL or WR, or to make up for the extra spot they take away by having a seperate FG kicker and kickoff specialist, should they still need to go that route in 2010.

And with Phillips taking over for Anderson, Garrett can design more-versatile packages with all 3 TEs on the filed. In a 2-TE package that also features a lead-blocker or FB, Dalas almost always runs the ball with Anderson in the formation, making it very predictable to defenses in knowing what's coming and defensing it. But with Phillips there instead, Dallas can run or pass, making the offense less predcitable, and giving it an option for burning the defense it plays a bunch formation against that offensive lineup.

After all, being less predciatlvbe should be the club's biggest goal for the offense in 2010, and this move can easily help that. So my hope is that Andreson will be traded for a later round draft pick in the upcoming draft, and with that pick Dallas can draft the extra OL or WR that would take that 7th spot that opens up by replacing Anderson with Phillips an H-back/FB specialist.

That's true. But no Cowboy coach has been able to stop himself from putting a FB on the roster. It may be the future of the position in the NFL, but the Cowboys seem wedded to having a FB around.

But, as pointed out above, if they COULD wean themselves from having a FB, they could save a roster spot that could be used for some other position of need. That would be nice -- especially if they have to keep a FG kicker in addition to Buehler again.

he isn't going anywhere

Maybe, maybe not.

He plays what? 10 snaps?

I like him as a player, but between his injuries, his weight issues coming into camp and now this...he's a guy that needs to learn that his job is by no means safe on this team and in this league.

The question is, can Phillips replace that productivity? Anderson, no doubt, is solid as a lead blocker and in blitz pickup, but he can't go out to catch a pass to save his life; He's one dimensional. If Phillips can handle these snaps and block as effectively, he can upgrade the postion from FB to H-Back and be a thrat as a blocker and receiver out of the backfield.

The dude has money. Just pay your damn tickets.

I have money but I dispute all my tickets and put off paying as long as I can. If I am fortunate, no hearing date is ever set and I never have to pay.

Who is going to bail him out?

We can do better at FB. Dumb for a fringe player. I like the guy but we can do better.

Gotta say I agree.

We don't really need a FB, most of the time we line up one of our TEs as an H-back. Bye Bye Deon, you were ok when you were here but you're not that needed.

Maybe we can bring back Daryl Johnston.

Would be interesting to see him blocking for the RBs with his walker.
