Dez wants to get paid!

I would at least call Cleveland and test their interest. I fear this mess may waste Dez's prime years. With the Josh Gordon fiasco and the extra one they got in the trade they could be interested. Smith is a must resign and if they are not going to resign Dez would be nice to get some good compensation. Doubt it happens. I personally want Dez as a Cowboy for life but it beats letting him walk.

Most people not wanting to extend Dez were praying we'd resign Lee.

Dez is an elite, young, trouble free, dedicated, injury free player. We only have one more of those on the roster (Smith) and a few with potential. But we need more cap space to sign guys like Crawford, Melton, Claiborne, Carr.

I really do think he is fantastic, and I hope we can find a deal that works. But Tyron is clearly a higher priority to retain over the next half decade, not to mention the money already tied up in QB and depending on this year RB.

I think we keep him, but I hope it is structured in a way that the CAP doesn't suffer.

Agreed. And we need to put some kind of injury clause etc in there to protect ourselves like we did with Lee. Dez is extremely physical when he plays and that can lead to a serious injury. I would hate to pay him a ton of guaranteed money and then that happen.

Mentioned multiple times both Lee & Bryant could have been traded for picks. Dez will never be worth more than he is now. Hope his back is ok. Franchise tag or trade.

And shipping him off to Cleveland wouldn't?

Although there are some playing time incentives in the contract that help, the main protection we had with Lee's contract is that we paid him 60% of the guaranteed money of other top tier linebackers. I think if you want to get a deal done with Dez that risk is going to always be there, because there is no way he is signing up for that.

I love Dez, but I have strong opinions on the WR position. The only player on this list that has realistically competed for a superbowl was Percy Harvin, and while he was definitely a factor in that game, clearly he was no factor in getting to the playoffs and Seattle was alright without him.

I want Dez to be on this team, but I do not believe that an individual WR is a key position in playoff success.

May not be a prerequisite but I think it's hard to argue that you'd be just as well off with less capable receivers.

Dallas has 3 players who are paid as top 10 players. Romo 7th highest paid, Witten 1st highest paid and Carr 3rd highest. After that no Cowboy player is currently being paid as a top 10 talent.

I would rather pay Dez than most of the others who got it recently. I mean, if it is going to be wasted money, throw it in the right direction.

Lee - was too early
Spencer - questionable
Ratliff - mistake
Demarco - wait and see approach but I would not sign him to big bucks
Carr - jumped the gun, should have kept Jenkins and spent elsewhere
Romo - had to do it but it is a crutch now

If we lose Dez, this receiving core will scare no one and he will be hard to replace. Pay the man if his health holds up this season.

He won't have to worry about a hometown discount. He's Jerry's ultimate pet project success. Jerry will probably give him the biggest WR contract in football and be happy to do it.

That's kind of what I worry about.

The team invested a lot into getting him into a situation where he's not a liability outside of the game. Not saying it's unreasonable to want to reap those rewards but the team can't just meet any demands.

This isnt really news. Of course he's going to want to be paid. This should have been on peoples minds for a long while now.

Definitely wouldn't argue that, ever. You need production out of your WRs or you end up looking like NE last year. And the Giants got AMAZING work from theirs in the 2011 campaign.

But I think you need a good WR core, not just a single good WR on offense.

After that they don't have much Top 10 talent, and what little talent they do have is up for contracts shortly.

Oh for sure. Can't have teams target a guy and neutralize him.

Dez deserves a deal.....

If you were going to trade him, this would have been the time to do it....he holds all the cards next year. He is either going to get 10+m as a franchise player from us, a long term deal from us or from someone else paying him as a free agent.

If I were GM, I would really wait about 6 games into the season. Enough time to get an idea of how TWill is progressing, if Street has anything to him, and if Escobar advances.
