DMN Blog: Ellis: Roy doesn't think defense fits him

but Roy used to make big plays. whether it would be a big 3rd down tackle or a big hit to fire up the defense or an interception when it mattered(unlike his 2 garbage time picks last season). he didn't do that last year.

yea because this is the same defense we had his rookie year? He was the sole play maker on defense back then because the plays are not their is because some one else is making the plays. RW has not been the shining star in Dallas since DWare has come here. Thats isn't a knock on RW just saying that their is more than one play maker now. Aslong as he continues to put up 90+ tackles and such I don't see how he wouldn't stay a cowboy.

You raise some very good points, but I think Ellis seems more comfortable this year at OLB at least. I don't remember him complaining since this off-season about his role on the team. (Or maybe he has been but I'm so used to it I just mentally turned it off.)

Hmmmmm

Ellis stopped whinning and started playing when Jerry restructured his contract.

Maybe Roy is taking the same route?

EDIT: I just realized Roy was the highest played player on the team last year and accounts for over 10% of our cap this year. So it is not a money thing, appears to be motivation/heart thing.

i am glad to hear what ellis had to say, its the truth...we should know what is going on...there is no way to get rid of roy this year so we will have to live with him...if pacman gets reinstated i would move henry to FS...get him or watkins ready...and move hamlin to SS...use roy on steams...short yardage...goaline.....nickel linebacker...or even backup nickel linebacker...time to get ready for the future without roy

I don't know why Ellis felt the need to report this

things like these should be kept in-house, unless that person wants to speak out for himself

Exactly... Ellis doesn't need to go around spreading private locker room talk...

It seems that Ellis tries to do anything he can to tear this team apart mentally, but continues to play well to keep his value up for trade or cut...

In the "Biggest Disapointment in the Draft Thread" I said not moving up in the 2nd Round and not picking up Kenny Phillips. Roy Needs to go..

Jerry gave in and gave him a chunk of money a year ago (which I would not have done) but I get the feeling Ellis still thinks he is going to get that one last big payday. Sorry Greg, I do not see any big signing bonus for you any time soon.

Private locker room talk should stay behind closed doors.

But the question I have to ask is this...did Roy say anything to his position coach, Wade, or any other asst coach about this entire issue? Sucks if he felt the only person he could say something to is Ellis.

I'd be honored if you went back to my post and edited it to include yourself...

Ellis went on to say that he was bothered by the way Williams has isolated himself from his teammates.
What's this, storyline #81?

Roy has made his money. I simply don't see him being a fit on any team anymore. What a waste.

I remember when RW was playing well early in his career, crushing everyone everywhere, Cliff Harris said he needed to pick his spots or he would wear himself out. I think RW fed off the big hits, he gained energy from it. He can't do it anymore and I think the energy is gone.

Uh those defending Roy and attacking Greg Ellis for bringing an issue up last year forget the following portion:

Ellis went on to say that he was bothered by the way Williams has isolated himself from his teammates. He said Williams is still working out at Valley Ranch, but he's leaving the facility by 7:30 a.m., so he's not spending any time with his teammates.
Williams is isolating himself this year...

Well, at least he is showing up to the gym.. last year, his butt was busy bloating himself up, gaining 20 plus pounds...

BTW, his play was deteriorating prior to Wade getting here... That is why Jerry emphasized that the new defense would cater to Roy's strengths... The fact is, the guy's play has deteriorated. Instead of realizing he needs to adjust, he always looks for excuses.

I really don't see a difference in play other the INT's Fumbles Pass deflections and sacks. In 07 he had to sit a game so some where explain where the deterioration of play is coming from.

I'm not sure about Roy Williams. It seems to me that the passing game has continued to evolve since Roy entered the league and the idea of a "strong" safety has less meaning than it did in the recent past. Greater emphasis on the passing game has clearly made the idea of a "box" safety less relevant as well (although diminished, the "box" safety role is still around).

Yep, the game has changed. Look at Adam Archuletta. He looked like a great player his rookie year, and now he's been released after bouncing around 3 teams in 3 years. Michael Lewis went from Pro Bowler to out of the league in a couple of years. The "in the box" safety is a dinosaur.

People say it's impossible for a safety to cover a TE? Darren Woodson and Lawyer Milloy used to cover slot WR's in the nickel. The game has changed. When Roy came into the league as a rookie Tony Gonzales was in a class by himself as far as althetic TEs. The rest of the Pro Bowl TE's were bigger, lumbering, sure handed guys like Wesley Walls, Bubba Franks and Chad Lewis. Now Gonzales is just one in a pool of athletic H-Back/WR hybrid TE's. Almost every team in the league has one, and the ones that don't are trying to get one. This division alone has Witten, Cooley, Shockey and LJ Smith. You just can't afford to put a safety on the field that's a complete liability in coverage. There's no way to hide them. NFL Offensive Coordinators are not stupid, and they're paid a lot of money to find ways to isolate guys like Roy Williams in coverage and pick on them. Safeties in this league have to cover in the NFL these days, period. You can't scheme it, wish it, pray it away.
