I remember him playing in a few spot situations......If I remember correctly he played alot in the first Giant Game and was lit up like a Christmas Tree.
I'll go back and look at this game. I think that's the correct game in which he played extended time, but I'm almost certain he didn't get "lit up like a Christmas tree." If I remember correctly there was one play where he blocked down and the RB whiffed on the block and Fabini got the blame. Fabini could have blown his assignment, or he could have been doing exactly as he was told. Often times, linemen get blamed for others' mistakes.

We can agree to disagree. That's fine.

No you are just wrong.
At one point Bledsoe was starting ahead of Romo, Al Singleton was starting ahead of Bobby Carpenter, Keith Davis was starting ahead of Pat Watkins, and Al Johnson was starting ahead of Gurode.

And when the season started and progressed this never happened.

Starting in a preseason game is meaningless. It was used as motivation and often to stroke egos.

In reality, the argument that "X was starting ahead of Y, therefore Y sucks" is not very convincing.

When it occurs in one of the sixteen games that do count, yes it does.

The bottom line is that the guy played last season and when he did he looked fine. If he sucked when he played, I'd see a reason to think he sucked. People just see that he was a backup and that he's old and assume he sucks. Sorry if I don't buy that logic.

I'd really like to believe we had this great veteran behind Colombo who could just emerge from a year layoff and step right in. But I cannot begin to start deluding myself that much.

I just don't believe he can. If he couldn't get it done last year, he's going to do so this year?

The guy hasn't missed many games in his whole career and he's only 32. The Cowboys were lucky last year that he was coming off an injury so the market wasn't there for him. Colombo narrowly beat him out and they may have been because of Colombo age and upside.

:hammer:

We have a winner.

When did he play last year and I don't mean preseason, everybody plays during preseason.. The guy played maybe a handful of plays...

Alex did you actually watch any of his action in the preseason? Can you say that you paid any attention to his play at all last season?

Yeah because coaches certainly would never use the preseason to evaluate players...

The whole preseason doesnt count argument is weak. There was one game where he started and he played better than anyone else against those first teamers.

Well, you've convinced me. Nice job. :D

I'd rather not rely on it, but it certainly is a plausible explanation for being reluctant to give Colombo big money. Draft a 3rd/4th round RT and maybe he can beat out Fabini sometime during the year. If he doesn't, then Fabini can hold the fort down for '07 and give the younger guy an offseason to work it out.

There's really no reason to give Colombo some 6 year, $50 million contract. He's simply not worth it.

Fabini, yes I did. I fully expected him to win the job because he was a veteran and a Coach Parcells favorite. But watching him perform against backups late and in the final game or two wasn't enough to convince us that he was a better option, or even the same for that matter.

I am amazed that now, a year later, that same aged veteran that nobody wanted then is now a saviour for some around here.

Was Fabini worth what we paid for him last year?

Yes they do use the preseason to evaluate players and thats why Fabini barely played during the regular season. Thanks for proving my point..

Put your straw men away. Nobody is claiming he's a savior. And I was saying back then that Fabini looked solid in preseason. And when he played well throughout the year I noted it as well. I'm not just pulling this out of my ***.

Absolutely, he was worth it. His contract was relatively tiny. He was insurance, and he may prove to be more than just insurance this year.

I think Colombo owes the team something. Said it more then once and will say it again. That guy was going NOWHERE. His career was DONE until Dallas gave him a chance.

That being said....were not talking about paying the guy pennies. hes gonna get a big contract no matter where he lands. With the prices that have come out, I think he could easily get a contract similar to Riveras a couple of years ago and no one would have a problem with it. Its really comes down to: How many MILLIONS does a man need?

But, of course its the way of the world. Just get as much as you can. Sucks but thats how it is.

Personally, I think he owes something to the organization....be that a slightly less deal then what his TOP OFFER might be from whatever team that has tons of money can throw him or even just the opportunity to match......I think he owes the organization something.

You didn't even realize he'd played throughout the year. I don't think there's any point discussing this further.

I couldn't agree more.. Too much time spent on a cat that never played and may not make the team this year...
