DMN: Cowboy blog: Colombo doesn't owe the Cowboys

I couldn't agree more.. Too much time spent on a cat that never played and may not make the team this year...

No we must preach on.....Our message must get out to the masses.

Because I can see it now....I'm going to banning 100's every Sunday for cursing our OL play. ;)

Fabini, yes I did. I fully expected him to win the job because he was a veteran and a Coach Parcells favorite. But watching him perform against backups late and in the final game or two wasn't enough to convince us that he was a better option, or even the same for that matter.

I am amazed that now, a year later, that same aged veteran that nobody wanted then is now a saviour for some around here.

Fair enough then. i had a different perspective 9on his play but i normally stop paying attention to preseason games after the first half.

As worried as BP was about protecting Bledsoe, considering how much of an experience edge Fabini had over Columbo, I think Columbo MUST have performed a good bit better to have won the starting job.

Jacob Rogers only wishes he would get the chance that Colombo got to resurrect a career. Its funny that guy can't get a whiff after being a 2nd round pick. I guess when you get that wuss, injury prone tag nobody wants to take a chance.

Here is what I remember.
1. Fabini was almost cut. Parcells chose him over Pettiti.
2. Fabini didn't look very good.

I would not want to go into the year with Fabini having a chance of starting.

Columbo owes us the right to match, that's it. If Jones were smart enough, he would have extended Columbo's contract sooner, like at the same time as Gurode.

I said this and got hammered for it. I knew he was on the verge of being cut..

The mix at the end was down to Fabini and Petitti. McQ had so much potential that BP did not want to let him go. COlumbo had BEAT OUT EVERYONE else and was the starter. BP kept Fabini since Fabini had lots more experience and could play both tackle positions. BUt I am willing to bet it was very close.

Find a single credible report that Fabini was about to be cut. You'll have a difficult time, because they don't exist. Anyone who says that Fabini looked bad in preseason or during the year either has a terrible memory or can't evaluate talent for squat.

ogt, there have been plenty of people who frankly have not been impressed by Fabini. I think he is good insurance, a good backup, but not someone I want starting.

I can understand not wanting to rely on Fabini for the long term. I don't want to either, but saying he played poorly is just wrong.

I'm not going to go back and look for credible report saying anything..but I do remember it being discussed on the board......several times.

and by the way, maybe it's you that can't evaluate talent for squat.....ever thought of that scenario?

Yes, it was discussed during mini-camps and training camp. It was started by the media saying he looked like an old man and that he couldn't move anymore.

The guy was coming off an injury where he missed a lot of time and he was out of shape. It took him awhile to get back into the groove. (FLO had the same problem) Once camp was breaking up and the preseason was starting he started playing pretty well which forced BP to cut a young, promising OT named Petitti. Who got scooped up by Payton as soon as his name hit the waiver wire.

All true..but that does not convince me he's the man that will come to the rescue of our OL. If we rely on a Fabini, a backup at best, and two second year players we are in deep do do. period

The Cowboys shouldn't break the bank for a guy that hadn't played a full season until last year... If he can't settle for like $8 or 9 million worth of guarantees then let him go and draft a RT..

People speculating on this board about him being cut isn't evidence of him almost getting cut. That's my point. There was never any evidence of being borderline. People just assumed that he was going to get cut -- in large part because of the board's obsession with Rob Petitti.

And yes I've thought of that scenario and rejected it with extreme prejudice. ;)

Nobody is saying he's going to "come to the rescue." The bottom line is that he looked as good as Colombo last year and he can bridge the gap until we get a mid-round draft pick ready. That scenario could be both cheaper and better for us in the long run than signing Colombo, without the risk of any drop off any talent.

ogt, there was a lot of talk at camp that Fabini was on the edge. Now maybe he got better as the year went by- but then he did not play much if at all, did he? What does that tell you?

Early on he looked sluggish. That was the talk. It prompted people to assume he was going to get cut. By the 3rd week of camp he looked fine and in preseason he was in top shape and it showed on the field.

One thousand posters can speculate that he was about to get cut, but it doesn't make it any more true, does it?
