Columnist Rick Gosselin answered questions in a chat Monday. Here are some highlights.
Question: How long before Jason Garret gets fired? Unreal this team couldn't get more than one win without Romo.
Rick Gosselin: Garrett signed a five-year contract extension last January. He's now one season into it. I don't see im leaving any time soon. That 12-4 season in 2015 will convince Jerry Jones he has a coach he can win with.
Question: I would like to know if you were the GM for the Cowboys would you select Cardale Jones or Christian Hackenberg in the third round because the 1st two rounds should be dedicated to adding Defensive(CB or S or LB) and Offensive(WR or RB) playmakers .
Rick Gosselin: If I have a top 5 pick, I take a long look at quarterback and running back. A skill player. Someone who plays with the ball in his hand and can make a difference. The Cowboys have to address the quarterback position at some point very soon. When Romo went down (twice), this season became a disaster because the franchise was banking on 16 games out of Romo. The year the Broncos signed Manning, they also used a second-round pick on Brock Osweiler. They were prepared for Manning's demise. Favre was in his prime with the Packers took Aaron Rodgers and he sat for three years. When Favre departed, Rodgers stepped in and the winning continued. You can talk yourself out of taking a quarterback in every round of every draft. But at some point you have to step up because if you don't have one, you have no chance. Starting to look for a QB after Romo retires would be too late. When Aikman retired, look at the scramble by the Cowboys and how many quarterbacks they ran through here before finding Romo. The good franchises plan ahead. It's time the Cowboys started planning ahead.
Question: although we know the Cowboys need to draft a qb, I don't trust this coaching staff to develop him 1 bit! Tell me how Houston is leading the afc south at 7-7 and they have played 5 diff qb's this yr yet Dallas is 4-10 and we have played 4 diff qb's this yr? The coaches on the offensive side of the ball are a joke here. What gives?
Rick Gosselin: Pittsburgh and Houston have both won games with three different starting quarterbacks this season. The Cowboys have put all their chips on Romo and haven't made an effort to bring in a quality young backup. They prefer to go the Kitna, Orton, Weeden, Cassel route. Until this staff develops a young quarterback, I'm going to have my doubts that they can.
