I agree----I would take an elite receiver if he was there though. Imagine adding a player with Julio Jones or Odell Beckham potential outside of Dez. Dez being hobbled this year showed how unreliable our group of receivers can be if injuries start to pile up with Dez.

Im very against taking a rb early, but to be fair, a big part of tge reason rbs taken early bust is that they are joining completes messes. If the cowboys spent a top 5 pick on the best rb available i have no doubt that they would become one of the most productive rbs in the league pretty quickly. Problem is, i think they could get the same out of the 7th best rb and could take them in the third or fourth round.

Not to mention this entire conversation is irrelevant. If Todd Gurley hadn't torn his ACL he was going in the top 5 last season without a doubt it my mind. So this whole RBS don't get drafted in the top 5 is laughable. If we don't have a player we like at 5-6 trade back a couple spot and pick up elliott. If they are worried about someone else picking him up, grab him when you can.

if the Cowboys are going to pick a first round offensive player then there is only one choice Laquon Treadwell. We need someone on the other side of Dez that is dangerous and can stretch the field. 6'3 and a 4.2 40 we would be drooling.

I agree with this 100 percent. If they don't go RB.

I like Mock 2.

Henry and Doughty would be nice pickups.

I know QB is the popular choice but I would love LB Jaylon Mills, FS Jalen Ramsey, DE Joey Bosa, or CB Vernon Hargreaves over Lynch and Goff. You can mock it different ways.

Mock 1
Resign Hardy
Sign FS Eric Berry

Draft
1-LB Jaylon Smith
2-QB Carson Wentz
3-CB Desmond King
4-RB Jordan Howard

Mock 2
Sign
DT Ngata
CB Janoris Jenkins

Draft
1-DE Joey Bosa
2-HB Derrick Henry
3-LB Terrance Smith
4-QB Brandon Doughty

Just some examples I'm throwing out there.

All 3 of them were put in immediately and perhaps too soon. If they had gotten a chance to sit for a year or two or even learn behind a great qb, they might have been different.... but they didn't.

Maybe but I think they are just average players.

QBs come in and play all the time in the NFL now, especially if they are a top 10 pick. I honestly can not think of the last time where a top 10 pick QB sat for a couple seasons, it just doesn't happen anymore. You only have a short time to evaluate a player to figure out if they are worth the fifth year option or a second contract.

Columnist Rick Gosselin answered questions in a chat Monday. Here are some highlights.

Question: How long before Jason Garret gets fired? Unreal this team couldn't get more than one win without Romo.

Rick Gosselin: Garrett signed a five-year contract extension last January. He's now one season into it. I don't see im leaving any time soon. That 12-4 season in 2015 will convince Jerry Jones he has a coach he can win with.

Question: I would like to know if you were the GM for the Cowboys would you select Cardale Jones or Christian Hackenberg in the third round because the 1st two rounds should be dedicated to adding Defensive(CB or S or LB) and Offensive(WR or RB) playmakers .

Rick Gosselin: If I have a top 5 pick, I take a long look at quarterback and running back. A skill player. Someone who plays with the ball in his hand and can make a difference. The Cowboys have to address the quarterback position at some point very soon. When Romo went down (twice), this season became a disaster because the franchise was banking on 16 games out of Romo. The year the Broncos signed Manning, they also used a second-round pick on Brock Osweiler. They were prepared for Manning's demise. Favre was in his prime with the Packers took Aaron Rodgers and he sat for three years. When Favre departed, Rodgers stepped in and the winning continued. You can talk yourself out of taking a quarterback in every round of every draft. But at some point you have to step up because if you don't have one, you have no chance. Starting to look for a QB after Romo retires would be too late. When Aikman retired, look at the scramble by the Cowboys and how many quarterbacks they ran through here before finding Romo. The good franchises plan ahead. It's time the Cowboys started planning ahead.

Question: although we know the Cowboys need to draft a qb, I don't trust this coaching staff to develop him 1 bit! Tell me how Houston is leading the afc south at 7-7 and they have played 5 diff qb's this yr yet Dallas is 4-10 and we have played 4 diff qb's this yr? The coaches on the offensive side of the ball are a joke here. What gives?

Rick Gosselin: Pittsburgh and Houston have both won games with three different starting quarterbacks this season. The Cowboys have put all their chips on Romo and haven't made an effort to bring in a quality young backup. They prefer to go the Kitna, Orton, Weeden, Cassel route. Until this staff develops a young quarterback, I'm going to have my doubts that they can.

That isn't going to happen unless we trade down.

What RB did you want the Cowboys to draft in the first round last year? Before you answer, consider who was available when we were on the clock not some pie in the sky idea we should have drafted Gurley because he was not an option.

No pie in the sky, if Dallas would have given up enough they could have gotten Gurley. This year get the top RB in the draft. If Dallas loses the next 2 games they will have a top 4-6 pick, so they would not have to move up to much !!! I know we have to have a RB thing so that's get Johnny out of the way too !! If the Brown's cut him Dallas should sign him.....

Are you suggesting that we should have traded up into the top 10 to draft Gurley? Oh my God........

We are NOT trading up for a RB this or any other year. Please man I'm begging here to stop the nonsense. And don't start with the JF stuff. He isn't coming here.

No the nonsense is thinking we were OK at RB this year !!!! I like Dmac but Dallas needs a # 1 RB and not only to win a Super Bowl but to keep Romo alive.

Every year the Cowboys have won a Super Bowl they had a dominant RB !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dallas beats Miami -------Duane Thomas and Calvin Hill
Dallas beats Broncos ----Tony Dorsett
Dallas beats Bills -----Emmitt Smith
Dallas beats Bills----Emmitt Smith
Dallas beats steelers----Emmitt Smith

I want Dallas to win Super Bowls, not trade down and have the most draft picks.

Ouch Vernon is JAG. His sack totals are 3.5, 11.5, 6.5, and 7. Those where full seasons. That's not too powerful.

Yes but he's excellent at stopping the run . He could come at a reasonable price and randy Gregory would be the 3rd down rusher. Im not sold on Gregory playing 1st and second down yet. Those sack numbers you showed look pretty darn good to me.

If they want a rb in the first they should try to trade down and then still take the first rb of the draft.
