Do we follow the Pats and trade out of 1st rd?

If Barnett and Taco are gone I like trading down and picking up another top 90 pick.

Engram is better than Njoku and it isn't close IMO.

I'd take him at 28 and never look back. Dude would be scary in this offense.

I agree that Engram could be great in the passing game. I'm a bit worried about his blocking.
I'd say he's a willing blocker, but at 237lbs not able to do the inline blocking that Witten does.
Maybe 10lbs of muscle added on in year two will do the trick.
Like you, I'm missing the apparent big deal about Njoku. And I'm assuming Howard will be long gone.

We have a ton of talent. Only on one side of the ball... and our kicking game.
We'd be Hella good in Arena football... lol

LOL..........good point bro, I agree

We have a championship caliber offense, the best kicker in the league................and expansion level defense:facepalm:

Mannnnnn WHAT. I'd trade Dak for Bill. Lol nah I'm joking, but I'd trade...........Dez easily.

Lol... that's more like it.

As for Patriots players, I was hoping we'd go after Logan Ryan. I always liked his style at CB.
But thought he'd be a mid level free agent, not top tier.

That costs you the pick, plus $10MM in cap space. When you ought to be able to get a comparable player just by sitting tight. Right after you just passed on the opportunity to add good CBs with no trade required in free agency. Why do that?
Exactly right.

And i'm always in favor of a good trade down. Give me your 2nd and 3rd (or future 1st and 2nd) and we're in business.

Interesting move on their part.

So does this mean the talent at #28 is also not a sure thing.

Is a trade back coming and if so..

for whom?

Over-valuing #28 has to be avoided.

Opinions?
  1. Depends on who is left on the board when we draft. We might.
  2. New England almost always trades down, but they did not do that this time....they traded the pick for WR Brandin Cooks.

Until you are on the board and have seen who is there, what offers are there, you have no way to judge

We're not New England, so attempting to follow their gameplan isn't going to do anything for us. If we had an organization that knew how to find gems in the later rounds consistently, then I'd consider a trade down. With us, 2nd rounders are thrwoaway picks. The only pick who has stuck around, and even his status can be shaky at times due to injuries is Sean Lee. When he's healthy, he's one of the best players in the game. On the other hand, it's hard to know if he'll finish a season. All of the other second rounders are no longer in this organization or about to be shipped out, whether it be Escobar, Bennett, Bruce Carter, etc.

Unless some great player slips on defense, I'm inclined to just go offense and make this offense as dominant as possible. We're at the bottom of the draft, and we're nowhere near one player away from creating a tough defense. The 1st round is the one round where we've been great... so my plan? If some great TE or WR slips, grab them unless some gem on defense happens to slip. I'm not going to draft for defense just because.

Cooks is a special case for a lot of reasons.
  1. He's VERY young. He's only 23. There are guys that get drafted around his age.
  2. He's under contract the next 2 years. They don't immediately need to give him a new megabux contract before they can see if he works out for them.
  3. He doesn't want to be on his current team, but otherwise has no flags for bad character or off-the-field stuff.
  4. He's proven. His last 2 seasons he had of 1,000+ yards and 8 + TDs. His catch rate has been consistently high every season. His yards per catch have gone up every season.
  5. He fits the profile the Patriots look for. Cooks's combine results match most closely to Deion Branch's, who in turn matches most closely with... Julian Edelman. He's very specifically the kind of wide receiver they want.

It's hard to find trade targets like that, which is why the Patriots jumped at the chance to get him.

It's a smart draft to trade down in, if you can get value for doing it. You give up a 5th year option, but you probably don't lose much in terms of the quality of players you're selecting from.

I wouldn't have any problem with it in theory, if they didn't move down too far.

Unless a player they can't live without is there, I think a trade down would be the preferable course in this draft, which is deep at the areas we need most (DE, CB, S, TE).

We've lost two safeties (Church, Wilcox), likely two corners (Mo, Carr), need a edge rusher and need a replacement for Witten.

We need to more bodies not fewer. This draft would be a good one to move down in and collect more picks. And it may work to our favor because the top quarterbacks in this year's draft aren't going to be picked at the top of the draft, which means teams may be willing to jump back into the bottom of the 1st round to acquire one.

That's a good point. We're in a good spot if anybody wants that 5th year option.
