Does any team draft better than Dallas?

McCarthy era.

Why don't you dumb*** people look at how we've been drafting the last 3 years.

CeeDee Lamb
Trevon Diggs
Micah Parsons
Tyler Smith
Sam Williams

The drafts have been getting better every year under McCarthy. But instead of enjoying our recent success y'all want to bring up the last 26 years. Does bring it up the last 26 years make y'all happy? Do y'all really think y'all are dropping some unknown, awesome knowledge? I swear y'all make me want to just....
Those players are absolutely outstanding. No wonder the Cowboys are a current top 4 team.

I know I reminisce about all the Super Bowls we have won over the past 26 years due to our superb drafting
What a piss poor attitude you have. If you can't enjoy and get excited about the current team there is something wrong with you. This is an exciting team to watch.

Dallas is good at drafting but their strategy is very boom or bust which leaves them with a top heavy roster with a lot of bad pieces and minimal depth. The fact that they do not pay for outside free agents is not really a mark in their favor.
They have outstanding depth on this current team. Watch number 33 on Sunday this will be his second game. Watch what number 54 does as well.

C'mon, in many cases, the Cowboys stumbled onto a perennial All Pro. it wasn't an incredible ability to evaluate.

They didn't want five time All Pro and future Hall of Famer Zack Martin. They wanted legendary bust Johnny Manziel.

They didn't want two time Pro Bowler Dak Prescott. They wanted "one and done" Paxton Lynch.

They didn't want Micah Parsons, they wanted a cornerback.

I'm sure there are many more but we'll never find out about it. They have had their share of busts, particularly in the 2nd round.

To be honest, they do draft well and their rookie free agent signings are great too but they are far from the best drafting team in the NFL.

The Ravens, 49ers, Bills, Titans draft well too.
‘They” didn’t want Johnny Football, just Jerry did. Everyone else in the franchise wanted Martin, and that’s who they took. They had a choice there, they had evaluated Martin and made the correct pick.

You’re right that they wanted Paxton Lynch but some people on the Cowboys really liked Dak and that’s who they picked.

Parsons was their highest rated defensive player in that draft. They were ready to take Surtain first because of positional need, but with him gone they defaulted back to their board, which said Parsons. Some teams had moved Micah way down either because of his hazing incident, because he didn’t play in 2020, or both. Dallas should absolutely get credit for making that pick. Not only that, but they turned that 10th pick into Micah and a third round pick. It was a heck of a job.

And really, you can do this for every team. They get “lucky” all the time in the draft. It is a common thing that evens out for all the teams over time. Did New England know that Brady was going be maybe the best QB in the league and just foolishly risked him to wait until the 6th round? Of course not. They liked him and picked him where they thought they should.

Good points all.

It does seem as though the "luckiest" teams are the ones that consistently add good talent. The better teams seem luckier because they are just better at evaluating talent.

I do think we have to be more specific as to the time frame because it wasn't always this way. Even then, the Cowboys will have one or two really good drafts followed by one awful draft and then go back to the good drafts.

We can't forget the role that rookie free agency has played so it's not all about the draft, it's the ability to evaluate talent across the board and, admittedly, the Cowboys have done well.

I'm pleased overall but I can't help thinking that the Cowboys could have done better if the guy with the best ability at evaluating talent was actually in charge.

How are you defining "drafts well"?
Team record?
Number of pro bowl players?
Number of drafted players re-signed?
Playoff appearances?

This was well-written and well-put.

Austin - another guy I mostly remember as a Ram. He definitely wasn't drafted by Dallas. Really only D- Ware was a star on a SB winning team after being drafted by Dallas and leaving here. That guy made it sound like there was a slew of former Cowboy draft picks who left to win SB's and there are just a few and only one was a star on those teams.
Sorry I meant Miles Austin he was a coach I think for the 9ers.

CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
To each his own. I’ll reserve judgment till the end of the season. For me, a loss in the SB is the last loser.
The Chicago Cubs have one of the most dedicated fan bases. They waited from 1908 to 2016 between championships...

Anybody that is only a fan if the team wins Super Bowls is not really a fan.

Apparently Seattle does. Built themselves a championship team with lots on non-first rounders, and looks like they may have done it again.

Long-term, I’ve always respected the Ravens draft decisions.

That retelling of the 2016 Draft isn’t completely accurate.

Yes, Jerry seemed to be the lone dog wanting Manziel. However, the FO did try to trade back into the 1st round to draft Paxton Lynch. Then, after failing to do that, they targeted Connor Cook in the 4th round but the Raiders took him ahead of their pick. They ended up settling on Dak whom they liked with their supplemental pick at the backend of Round 4.

So, yes, they liked “Dak” and should be credited for drafting him but let’s not act like he wasn’t a fallback. They preferred other QBs in that draft.

Yes, I know. They did try to take other QB’s (plural) first.

Is that your bar for success then? Mines a bit higher but hey, whatever makes you happy.
What makes me happy is that the team is one of the top teams in the league with the best player in the league. This team is exciting and has a chance to win each and every game. If you can't get excited you must be dead.
