CFZ Does the Diggs Injury Necessitate a Big Move?

We're good for now. Deep roster. See how it plays out, then look into FAs.

Let me preface this thread with this: Let us all wish Diggs a speedy recovery and return to the field. I am sure he is absolutely devastated by the realization that he will not get to play in what is shaping up to be a special Cowboys season.

With Diggs out for the season, Dallas is down an All-Pro cornerback on what is likely the league's best defensive unit. Combined with Gilmore, Dallas had a pair of lockdown DBs that made it very difficult for opposing offenses to throw. Without #7, you go from a CB duo that most of the league would envy to just good with Gilmore + Bland + Lewis.

To win anything in this league, you have to good but luck is a major factor. Nearly every team that makes the Superbowl does so on the back of good injury luck. The Cowboys appear to be as good as anyone right now and the NFC is totally wide open outside of SF, Philly, and Dallas. This is likely the best chance that Dallas has had at making to the NFCCG or further in a very long time. Do you jump on this window at the expense of future draft capital, or hope that the roster you have built is deep enough to sustain the loss of one of the NFL's best cornerbacks in Week 2?

My question is this:

Staying put and observing the performance of the defense without Diggs against the Cardinals and Patriots may be the wisest move, but what happens if teams start being able to move the ball on you in the passing game?

If you are the Cowboys front office, does this injury make you think that another big time addition via a trade may be necessary to get you past Philly and SF?
It would need to be a veteran on the last year of his contract that is on a bad team.
- i.e. The team is unlikely to re-sign him next year anyway.

The issue is that we don't really know which teams are bad.
- i.e. Are the Bengals really as bad as some other 0-2 teams?

They kept Jourdan Lewis at 5 million as the 4th CB for a reason...

I'm not sure if I would panic if I was the FO, but I would definitely keep my ear to the streets.............just in case.

nope

Patrick Surtain? That's as idiotic as saying we should call the Jets up and see if Sauce Gardner is available.

This may come as a shock to the narcissistic segment of our fan base....but other teams don't groom ProBowl and AllPro players, like Surtain is just in his 2nd season, just to send them to the Cowboys.

Hey....I heard the Rams are looking for a pass rusher...maybe they should see if Micah Parsons "comes available"
Can the Cowboys rent a player?

Give the Jets a 2nd and agree to trade him back after the 2023 season...Sauce...

I wouldn't say big love but add CB to the list. They need a RB and LB too. Will McClay do yo thang and Stephen better make some kind of move.

No, they have a full roster. Lewis just came back
They can always stash them on practice squad and bring them up as needed, cannot wait until we have another CB injured and season going down the toilet

They already have 3 other corners.

Surtain is in his 3rd season. Minkah Fitzpatrick was traded while on his rookie deal when Miami was going full rebuild. If Denver somehow completely craters it could happen (for a high price). Never said it was likely, but weird stuff happens in the league. Get over yourself.

Eh, if they trade for anything id think it would be a capable backup center. Guessing Farniok not willing to sign to the PS threw a wrench in their plans. Maybe a RB if they have any type of scratch or hangnail before the deadline!

What's the use of keeping 7 CBs on the 53 man roster if you're going to suddenly look for trading for another CB? Heck, 7 CBs is a lot! If you're going to trade for another team's CB, cut 1 of the current backup CBs so the Cowboys can bring in another backup Olineman who can play Center & Guard so we're in desperate need of that at the moment due to sudden injuries to our starters on the Oline.

Cowboys should go pick up Farniok from the Bears practice squad and guarantee Farniok a spot on the 53 man roster. That would solve the need for a quality backup proven Center. The roster spot is now available sadly due to Diggs' season ending injury.

I think we're most likely to rely upon one of our backup CBs to take Diggs' place as well as humanly possible. It's a task that might require an absolute miracle to be granted to see success. Getting someone to equal what Diggs is capable of would be overly expensive, even if possible. Our FO just isn't likely to welcome such a plan. They much prefer to keep their financial fortunes under lock and key, rather than to overspend.

Agree, give Bland a chance, he's a ball hawk. Our pass rush will create opportunities. Dont panic, yet, lets evaluate after Cards and Pats.

As for your points re: Eagles and 49ers.....if they're going to beat us offensively it's going to be on the ground.
