It's more just adding another brain to the staff. For example, Texans already have a DB coach, but they just added Ray Rhodes (former HC and coordinator) as an assistant DB coach. You want that kind of knowledge on staff.

I love the idea of capers. Capers, phillips, stewart and campo...gulp. We have some serious experience and should improve again this season on defense.

capers would be a really good hire.

I can see both sides of things:

On one hand, I think it would be a great hire and I feel you can never have too many experienced coaches on staff.

On the other, I see where people could think that Jerry is already making plans for Garrett to take over in 2009 and hiring part of his staff now.

I'll choose to take the high road on this one and feel positive that this influx of experience will help to maximize the investment made in this defense.

I like this idea but would Stewart accept the demotion?

I'd guess that he would only accept the demotion if he had no where else to go. And he'd probably be looking to move out as fast as possible.

I don't think it would be a positive to keep Stewart around in that scenario.

Frankly said, Wade seems like the loyal type and I don't think he would demote Stewart either.

Couldn't Capers also be an Asst HC (focusing on Defense) and work with Wade on defensive "quality control" and stuff like that? More big picture stuff (but on the defensive side).

I would imagine he would be an assitant head coach, defense and maybe take care of the linebackers if they cant get pagano or whoever else they are looking for.

I dont think stewart is going anywhere.

Agreed.

I don't think Stewart is going anywhere either.

I'd love it if they can get Pagano to coach the LBs and get Capers to be an Asst HC, Defense.

If Pagano is coaching outside LBs at SD (at least i thought that is his role), and he's coaching both outside and inside LBs here, isn't that an outright promotion?

Not that SD has to let him go, but it would be crappy for SD not let him improve his position.

Man, more than ever I wish Atlanta would have let us hire Emmitt Thomas.

I'll believe this when I see it. Frankly, I don't see where he'd fit, unless we can't get John Pagano and Capers is willing to coach linebackers.

Which would be fine with me. Wade said when he hired Grantham that he thought former coordinator experience was valuable. If we got Capers along with Grantham and Campo, that would be three position coaches who meet that criterion -- not bad.

What I don't understand is why so many people seem to love Capers so much as a coordinator. What does he do other than run the 34? Wade is the de facto DC here, and he's better than Capers.

I was hoping for thurman. It would have been pretty cool to have all these former cowboys working for the team. plus that baltimore secondary is always taking the ball away.

I really wanted that too. We could also still get Mel Phillips who was let go in Miami. He has 28 years of experience and 23 with Miami, so he knows Capers, Houck and Garrett.

Thurman would have been good for my hopes. No doubt about it. I do like Emmitt Thomas almost as much though.

There is no doubt wade is a better coordinator. Having grantham, stewart, capers, campo would be a very good thing, all coordinators coaching the defense.

I think pasqualoni was a very good coach, It would be great if they get another guy with his ability.

Capers doesnt have to have an exact title he could be assistant head coach -defense. Or he could be AHC linebackers.

Capers has been around and has game planned for everyone and everything, he has won some big games and lost some big games. That is what I like about him, and also he has an aggressive defensive tendency.

I would be happy to see Capers come here. I'm just curious to see what def. coach position he's hired for?

I think when its all said and done we are gonna have a much improved coaching staff.

Great job by Wade and Jerry in not only replacing but possibly improving after the mass defections.

I suppose.

It'll be interesting to see how things play out next season. You'd think it'd have to at least be a little odd for Wade and Stewart to know their likely replacements after the season are already on staff working for them this year.

why? when wade was hired for 3 years and garrett came in before him, everyone knew garrett was being groomed. people seem to yell at jones for not planning ahead and when he does, he gets yelled at again. he just can't win with some but that's fine. each will see it their own way.

bottom line is jones has been planning for this and many years to come since likely he knew parcells would be leaving. you can comment each move is "odd" along the way you can understand and accept the whole picture of what he's doing and give it time to see what happens.

Hard to be the AHC when Garrett already has that position.

You can have 2 Assistant Head Coaches. One for Offense and one for Defense...

That would require giving some appreciable credit to JJ. But, look who you are responding too.

It is good to have a plan. But it's also "odd" to start implementing it and hiring staff for the HC-in-waiting while the current HC is still here.

And I am going to see what happens, that's why I mentioned already that it'll be interesting to see how it works out in '08.
