Draft priorities getting clearer

My thinking goes like this:

1st. 2nd. 3rd. 4th. 5th Rounds
OL, RB, DT, LB, TE the thing is two of these could be solved in free agency by signing LB Bobby Wagner and TE Dalton Schultz on a one year deal for a much lower contract than 10 mil so far his market is not what him and his agent thought it would be.
This is closer to what I would go for. Maybe DT and OL being switched. RB you can pretty much find a good one in many rounds.

My bold prediction is TE with pick #1. This is NOT based on need. OL, DL, RB, and WR are all arguably bigger needs.

The way I see the draft unfolding, at #26, the elite players at the "need" positions listed above will be picked over. Dallas might be looking at the 8th best DL available for example. At the TE position, Dallas might possibly be looking at the second best TE in a draft loaded with good ones. If the goal is to grab an elite talent in round 1, the BPA could very well be TE.

To be clear, I would rather be beefing up both lines.

Or RB... I think Jerry is going gonna get him a new RB...

What I dont want to do is ignore OL we need to draft one early in this upcoming draft. We need a RB to replace Elliott. We need a LB outside of Micah and LVE. What I see as a glaring need is DT.

That's not how they've done things in the past.

Also doubt a 30 year old WR on a deal with $0 guaranteed money in the 2nd year of the contract eliminates WR for them.
You harp on his age; frankly THAT is probably NOT what they care about. WR as a draft priority is now much less. IF we did not have so many holes to fill maybe not but WE DO.
You need to factor that reality into what will probably happen.

The NFL mantra has always been since the coming of the cap and FA that you take care of, as much as possible, serious NEEDS in FA. Now sadly we have not done that very much and have reached in the draft with some expected bad results. Claiborne, Jaylon, etc. Though Claiborne was not technically a reach at where we drafted him, not bothering to do our due diligence on him cost us.

This year the boys have been using trades instead of FA; which if you are able to get what is NEEDED that way is not a bad thing if you are not giving up relatively high draft picks. 5th and 6th rd picks are quite expendable due to the simple fact that few picks in these rounds end up making a difference on the team.

And once again one must remember how risk adverse the boys are now (except when Jerry gets a wild hair up his butt)

Its not a bad SOP but it is one that is not likely to win championships either. One thing has been proven is that you NEED to take big risks now and then to win it all.

The Rams and Chiefs have shown this; even the birds as well.

IF we want to win it all we have to move beyond safe and conservative and sadly I do not see that happening.

Add an elite pass catching TE and our passing offense is a strength again. They still have to figure out their run game and stopping the run on defense.
It’s never going to be a strength with Dak at QB

I am thinking they use a later rd pick on RB; RBs have traditionally done better in their rookie seasons then just about any other position.
Same with WR as the NEED is now not so great. We got a very good CB by trade so that drops some in need as well.

TE is probably sharing their priority with OL and HOPEFULLY DL
I don’t think RB is gonna be the pick at 26 but if the right guy was there it could be the pick in the second depending on who’s there

At the end of the first round you usually see the most value at DB, OL, LB, and RB. All could be possibilities for the Cowboys.

What I don't want in round 1 is a TE. For starters most of the top tight ends in the NFL weren't first round picks. 2, Ferg and Hendershot showed promise. 3, There are still some veteran guys beyond Schultz that won't break the bank and are intriguing. Austin Hooper, Irv Smith, Foster Moreau could bring some value. Irv Smith has the injury history, but is young and talented.

I have LB ahead of WR and CB now and DT is far and away our biggest need but I’m hoping we see something in free agency to dull that a bit.

If I had to guess I’d say we draft one of Kincaid or Bijan in the first round.

About 6 weeks until the draft. That seems like a lifetime at this point.

Sign James Washington and extend Gallup - draft Tolbert
Sign Fowler and extend both Lawrence and Armstrong - draft Sam Williams
Franchise Schultz - draft Ferguson
True, but only Washington and Fowler were guys they brought in. And both were to add depth, not necessarily start.

Gilmore and Cooks are obviously older vets, but I think they’re expecting Gilmore to start and Cooks to at least be the #3?WR.

This doesn’t mean we won’t draft a CB or WR, but I think it’s more likely we won’t in the 1st.

To me that leaves our major needs, possible 1st, to be among OL, TE, DT or RB.

I think RB would only be an option if it’s Bijan and he is almost assured to be gone by 26. So unless we are really dumb and trade up I don’t see it being RB.

By process of elimination , right now I think it’ll come down to TE, OL or DT. But it’s been over 25 yrs since we’ve drafted a TE or DT in the first. Based on the talent likely available at these positions and knowing we want to give more help to Dak I will narrow it down to OL and TE.

Not that this is what I would do, but based on all the above I think it will Be TE if Dalton or Mayer are there at 26.

Somebody hasn’t been paying attention. It’s definitely going to be a pass catcher in round one and probably not a wr. So there is only te left
Paying attention to what? The Cowboys have come out and said they are going tight end?

Not all the dominoes have fallen, but we are getting some clarity.

I've done posts in the past showing a clear correlation between where we have sunk assets in free agency/trades and the positions we pick early (rounds 1-4) in the past.

We can expect that CB, WR, and RB will be three of our first four selections in the upcoming draft. The 4th likely option is TE given the amount of formal interviews we've had with TE prospects.
Agree. Gilly and Cooks are on very short term deals so they shouldn’t effect us looking at WR and CB early.

Take the best player at a money position.

His draft position confused me because no one wants to take RB early but he’s one of the best prospects in the draft….
If he falls to 26, I'm running the card up in a NY min...lol. Every draft grade/evaluation I have seen says he's a top-10 talent, some even top-5. No, I would not take him with a top-10 pick but at 26? Hell yea......sweet thing about having Pollard is we won't have to put a lot of wear and tear on him during his rookie season.

Yeah I don’t see him lasting to us just don’t know how far he goes.
