I was just wondering if he would keep us from drafting Romo's replacement.
The FO probably won't look at getting a replacement for Romo until they think he is entering his last year. At that point if Vaughn looks like the guy we golden. If not we move on.

Enough of the bargain bin 'gem' quarterbacks. We lucked out with Romo. I don't want to spend time hoping some undrafted gem turns out. Take a risk on a qb.

Out of curiosity...you like him better than Austin Davis, if, say, Davis were released by the Rams again?
No. But simply because of a bigger sample size.

I think Vaughan has a higher ceiling. He has the physical tools to develop into a player that can threaten the entire field. Davis however offers me more value because I know he can play in the NFL and operate an NFL offense. I think he is a Kyle Orton, at best a Marc Bulger, at worst Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I feel about the same way about them. I wasn't a huge fan of Vaughan's except he does seem to have that really chill temperament. Davis, I was really impressed with when we played him, and he's a good example of a guy that can be in and cut from an NFL camp. I didn't see him play in the middle of the year, though I understand he was less impressive than he was early.

More than anything, these guys need NFL quality reps, and there's a hard limit on how many of those are available. It's not all that hard to find guys who might fit the mold physically, but getting that experience and finding out if they can process information quickly enough is expensive.

Everybody should get to carry three QBs on their roster, no matter what. The position is too important, and the training too hard to get, otherwise. You end up with guys bouncing around from system to system learning multiple offenses when they haven't proven they can handle one.

I'd jettison Weeden in that case.

I was just using Davis as a litmus test for how much we might like Vaughan, since Weeden was sitting at home not all that long ago, and hoping for work. It's such a crapshoot finding a young QB to try to develop.

As for Vaughan, I think if he's going to do anything worthwhile in this league, he'd better make a significant move on that backup job next season. If he does, that's how we'll know they think they have a keeper. If he's not able to earn the backup snaps after two camps, though, I don't have a ton of interest in dedicating an extra spot on the roster to a guy we can't use unless somebody gets hurt. I'd rather carry an extra defender or rotate through street free agents at a faster clip.

Not so statistically impossible when you consider that the same team has hit with other undrafted FAs like Austin, Church, and Leary. Personally, I think the Cowboys have been one of the best teams at identifying and developing undrafted FAs lately. I hope we add Patmon to that list.

Big difference hitting on an undrafted QB twice in 15 years.

Another value of Vaughan is that if we do get a young QB with a prime pick (1st through 3rd) is that Vaughan has the physical talent to promote competition and that QB wont feel like the job is automatically his when we do move from Romo ( Or Romo moves on from us)

Davis was "impressive" early in the year and got benched after poor play and mistakes repeatedly put their defense in poor positions. Fisher made the move despite the illusion of "development". This is about results and Davis was not getting it done.

Trying to hit on undrafted free agents in one of the most difficult positions to evaluate is a fruitless process.

The Rams had their one lightning in a bottle miracle in Warner. We had ours in Romo. There is no reason to believe that it happens again, much less expect it.

I hope so. That guy seemed cool as a bear in the pool, and has all the intangibles.

He'll probably end up being a career #2 for at least a few years.

UDFA QB's usually don't make it. Romo made it, but he was considered to be likely a 6th round pick and there was some talk of draft boards having him as high as a 3rd round pick (2 time winner of the Walter Payton award). I remember when we got Romo I was surprised because I had thought he would have been drafted.

Kurt Warner made it, but he was a crazy story of a guy that was overlooked because he was living in Iowa as a teenager and colleges around there ran the option at the time. Then he went to Northern Iowa where he had to sit behind the school's all-time passing leader for 3 years.

That's probably what I think Vaughn has going for him...he's a small school player and sometimes those guys just happen to get overlooked for various reasons when they are actually quite good.

I still say we should draft a QB though. I don't believe competition is necessarily a bad thing at the QB position when it is between a couple of guys that are going to be backups for now.

they got the number by picking 1st in both of those drafts. Great break that Manning and Luck were the top QB in those drafts.

Oh let's be honest.....Colts tanked to get those picks. It just goes to show Jerry is not willing to tank a season and lose money in ticket sales to get a real QB. He'd rather go through
the procees of finding a guy that is just good enough to be servicable ...and not have to shell out the big bucks. Jerry's way may not win you a championship....but it sure makes his wallet fatter.:D

Be honest, fans would throw hissy if this team tanked a season. Few here gave Dallas a snow balls chance in hell of getting this far with 9-4 record and in the think of the race. You bet I will give Jerry credit for that hell if you are going to blame him for poor picks then give credit that this team does have the talent to compete.

As for the colts tanking the season they went 2-3 over the last 5 games of the season, why risk getting the pick by winning 2 of the last 5 games?

He showed promise during this last preseason. I know some like to mention that he has fairly small hands, but so does Tony Romo and that's worked out alright.

I think the next step for him is improving enough to make Weeden expendable next year. Become the number two guy and keep battling away so that once Romo does have to hang them up, he'll at least get a shot at competing for that job.

Or we could be honest and say Manning's neck and not playing that year played an enormous part in the Colts not winning any games.
