Do you have examples of many other teams doing it?
In 2001, Seattle traded for GB backup Matt Hasselbeck, giving up 7 spots in the first round AND a third round pick for a 6th round QB with 0 career starts.
in 2002 Miami traded a second round pick for Eagles 5th round backup QB AJ Feeley after 5 starts
In 2005 Dallas traded a 3rd round pick for Texans reserve player Drew Henson despite him being out of Football
In 2007, the Houston Texans traded 2(!) second round picks for Falcons backup QB Matt Shaub.
In 2009 KC traded a 2nd round pick for Matt Cassel after 15 starts of inflated stats with the greatest offense ever seen up to that point.
In 2010 Arizona traded a 2nd round pick and pro bowl CB DRC for Kevin Kolb after… 4 starts(?)
In 2013 the KC Chiefs traded multiple picks, including a 2nd rounder for 49ers demoted backup QB Alex Smith. At the time Smith had never even had a 20 TD season, 4000 yards passing, or a pro bowl invite in his 8 years in the league.
In 2015 the Philadelphia Eagles traded pro bowl QB Nick Foles and a 2nd round pick to the St Louis Rams for disappointing 1st overall pick Sam Bradford.
In 2016 Bradford was then traded to the Vikings for a first round pick after the Eagles just drafted the QB to ultimately replace him… and Bradford having yet another losing season.
In 2020 The Colts traded a 1* and a 3 for Carson Wentz despite being statistically the worst QB in the NFL the previous season.
In 2021 Carolina Panthers traded a 2, a 4, and a 6 for the Failing Jets young QB Sam Darnold
Some of these worked out, some didn’t. But every one was an overpay at the time of the trade due to the team’s desperation at the QB position
