Eric Winston Released by Chiefs

Lol. This doesn't sound too good:

Albert, who received the franchise tag this week, was then asked by one of his followers if he'd move to right tackle to make room for Joeckel as the No. 1 overall pick in next month's draft.

"Nope," Albert replied.

A few more:

The tweets, since deleted from Albert's account, were in response to a few fans who asked him how he felt about a move to the right side (Response: "No way"), and whether he felt that he was a natural left tackle (Response: "You damn right"). He concluded with "Don't get mad I don't give you the answer you don't want to hear... That's your bad," when a few more people insinuated that Albert would not do what was best for the team.

Same thing you said the season starts march 12th, you have to be under on the 12th then you can go over again as ling as you under by the first game which is correct I just didn't bother to mention your top 51 guys have to be under the cap, which they still would be. Thats how teams have 80 plus players in camp.

I think you are misunderstanding the rule. It seems, and I may be mistaken, tha you believe you can be over the cap between March 13th and the start of the season, and that is only true for the top 51 players.

For example, if our top 51 salaries put us at $122 million (1 million under the cap), we couldn't sign Winston to a deal that includes a first year cap number of 5 million because that would put us some where around $127 million (slightly less because the bottom salary would no longer count).

So all in all, Free's salary not coming off the books till June 2nd is infact significant.

I could have sworn xwalker has posted before that Free released without the designation still takes 3 million off the cap.

Pretty much a given they are going OT #1 overall now.

Here:
The Cowboys have been digging deep on restructures, some that only saved about 1M. They could immediately save 3M by cutting Free and then a total of 7M after June 1st (he can be cut now and designated as a June 1st cut at which time half of his accelerated bonus money can be moved to 2014).

There is a huge list of OTs in Free Agency this year. It seems that many of them would be as good as Free for less than his 7M base salary.

Your right my bad but I'm still right that we can sign Winston and cut Connor, or extend romo by the 12th and be fine

If we don't go after Winston, who's only 29, and keep Free, who sucks, I'm going to vomit all over myself.

Hell of a zone blocking RT.

Won't break the bank.

Would provide fantastic leadership to our o-line.

Parnell can be our quality back up swing tackle and continue to develop at a favorable price behind Winston.

This guy should be a priority to get in here and look at.

Most teams probably won't right away because of all the OT's in FA and available in the draft.

He hung around a bit last year in FA and may very well this year with all the other variables in place.

Therefore, an even more cost effective price.

We definitely need to consider Winston though.

If he's so good, why's he available?

Seriously though, we should consider him...

I completely agree.

I've been disappointed by many of the decisions this offseason and seeing this team not make every attempt to bring in this fine player and person would be yet another one.

I sincerely hope they make every effort to sign him and have one less offensive line issue to worry about.

They seem to 'find a way' in all of the questionable cases, they need to 'find a way' now.

They say Bill Callahan has incredible football knowledge, so hopefully he'll be able to turn this into am incredible free agent pickup for us.

Just a guess but i think the off the field comment had a bit to do with the Jovan Belcher situation.

that is my take as well. Then you look at the overall horrible season the Chiefs had.

Would be a nice signing but I think he ends up in Miami. The Phins made a run at him last offseason but were outbid by the Chiefs. Winstons offseason home is in South Florida and his brother works for the Dolphins as a scout.

Was Winston too pricey to be their swing OT? Did he have no chance at playing Guard? Seems weird that they opted to cut him rather than explore other options.

Chiefs release tackle Eric Winston
March 6
BY RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star

The reshaping of the Chiefs has continued with the release of offensive tackle Eric Winston.

Winston, who spent just one season with the team, confirmed the club’s move by phone Wednesday night. But he said until he meets with general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid on Thursday, he did not want to comment further other than to express his appreciation for his time in Kansas City.

“Even though it was an incredibly tough year on and off the field last year, I wouldn’t trade the relationships I made in Kansas City and the overall experience I had for anything,” Winston said on his Twitter account. “It was an honor to be a Chief.”

The release of Winston, 29, and the club’s applying the franchise tag to veteran left tackle Branden Albert, clears the way for the Chiefs to select Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel with the first pick of the NFL draft. Joeckel , the Outland Trophy winner, was a three-year starting left tackle in college but could be converted to the right side. Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher, who rose up the draft boards after his outstanding play at the Senior Bowl, might be another candidate to be the first overall pick.

Winston was one of former Chiefs’ general manager Scott Pioli’s major free agent signings in the 2012 offseason. He signed a four-year contract worth $22 million and was due to earn $4.9 million in 2013 and count $6.5 million against the salary cap.

@BryanBroaddus: “@beckybeck_86: @BryanBroaddus any chance cowboys go after Eric Winston?” About the money and how much he is willing to take. So, no.
