Quote from Winston:

I wonder what that means. It's like he expected it.

I would take that to have something to do with his team mate shooting himself being the off the field stuff he's refering to.

As for him being cut this is likely because they're going T with the first pick and we absolutely should be looking to pick this guy up and dumping Free in a heartbeat.

We could have got this guy for a 7th round pick next year, since the Chiefs could get nothing for him and had to release him. Parnell looked like a backup turnstile to me last year, and Free is a starting turnstile. I don't see how we could pass this guy up.

I think some would disagree on the Parnell turnstile comment, there has been a lot of tape that has been studied that says Parnell improved and just needed the reps he has the ability and power and strength. So I wouldn't be so quick to just throw a homegrown guy to heap pile just yet.

I think as a fan base, some need to come to the realization that the majority of FAs are not going to give a discount to play for the Cowboys.

There might be a player who has been a Cowboy all along and might do it. There might be a player that has been a cowboys fan all their life and is offered a contract that is pretty close to the next one, or you might have someone that lives in texas and wants to be home with his family or retire here.

But for the most part FA players are looking to secure their financial future and will by and large take the best monetary deal they can get.

I think people really need to wake up from the idea that a FA will give a good discount to play with the cowboys. It can happen but it is now the exception and far from the rule. This is not the mid nineties and we are not in the middle of a dynasty.

BrainPaint....I think you are spot on. However, I think this is a guy whose fair market value is gonna be very similar to what his last contract was. That was 4 years and $22 million with a 4 million signing bonus. He is a year older and is coming off a decent but not outstanding year.

I think if we get something done with Romo, which I feel very sure will happen, then Winston is someone we could easily fit into our cap. Give him a little more guaranteed money and signing bonus up front...maybe same overall numbers but 8 million in signing bonus and guarantee first two years of salary. First two years of salary make around 1m each. Cap hits first two years $3m each, jumping to 7m and 9m in years 3 and 4. If cut after year two, cap hit in year three is 4m and saves 3m against his number for that year and is off the books the following year.

This gives us time to determine if Parnell deserves to be paid a decent money contract or not. He's on the books for cheap for two more years I believe.

Winston only got 4 million signing bonus last season, then one 500,000 roster bonus and was due another one that he didn't end up getting. So I don't know why you would want to give him 8 million in bonus.

1 - To entice him to come here rather than go to Philly or NYG, both who supposedly have him on their radar.

2 - To keep his cap hits reasonable the first couple years. We can't afford to have him counting 4-5m against the cap in our current cap situation.

@BryanBroaddus: “@beckybeck_86: @BryanBroaddus any chance cowboys go after Eric Winston?” About the money and how much he is willing to take. So, no.

Boy, that's great to hear about this bunch of knuckleheads!

Free is making $8 million to be a no confidence turn style and you somehow decide that $10 million plus on a franchise tag is OK, but when one of the league's best right tackles comes available 'we can't afford it'?

If this is true, this bunch deserve what they get.

Don't worry, I heard it straight from Stephen Jones mouth that the cap "is not an issue".

We sure don't deserve it as fans though. Romo doesn't deserve it. I am not a fan of building the line through free agency, but Jerry is. This is the type of player that he should go after if he insists on taking the free agency route.

Trust me, I'm not either and the vicious cycle needs to stop.

I fully advocate building the trenches in this year's draft.

But this is an opportunity to solidify a serious weak spot, allowing draft resources to solidify the middle.

You sign this guy and draft one of the top guards and this line goes from liability to strength pretty fast in my opinion.

I agree. I don't expect Jerry does though.

Seriously?

Look it up.

The guy allowed less sacks than any right tackle playing the same number of snaps.

That puts him among the best in my book.

I'll gladly compare him to what we have if you would like.

I would start with information from this very thread:

5 highest-paid RTs: 1. Doug Free (8M) 2. David Stewart (6.48M) 3. Eric Winston (5.5M) 4. Todd Herremans (5.42M) 5. Anthony Davis (5.3M).

All of these right tackles are significantly better - and significantly cheaper than Doug Free.

We now have the option to acquire one of them.

I am not sure that the amount paid equates to them being the best.

If that logic holds than Doug Free would be the best and if you moved that same logic over to CBs...The eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha would be among the best although stats wise he and Doug Free were ranked near bottom of their positions.

IOW I was hoping for a more stat based comparison of the top RTs in the NFL.

Who gave up the most sacks, who graded out better and so on.

Not too interested in price ranges as we all know that does not always paint the correct picture.

It is my fault as I should have clarified that in my initial post.:(

No, no fault at all.

I was just using that as a starting point.

Here is another point:

Sacks allowed in 2012:

Winston - 3

Free - 7

In addition to tying for most penalties

“@AlbertBreer: 3 teams are in on ex-Chiefs OT Eric Winston, and he could sign somewhere today. Important, bc the negotiating window for UFAs opens tonight.”

Hearing the Texans and Eagles, not sure who the other team is??
